RGT Nostalgia Society #13 - The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Eh i just got a bunch of free time, and i believe there's somone else from RGTNS who already beaten the games.

As for the bottle you can fill it with milk, charm, grandma special potion (except the charm all of those will cost a fortune)

Or i dunno i'm also a newbie in this game lol.

Anyway i also wanted to thanks whoever that mentioned poking the wall to check if it was breakable or not '>'
Still, though. Ya led the way for the rest of us if we ever get stuck, pfft.

Of course, I ran into the Lon Lon Ranch a bit ago. Grandma's special potion? Are you talking about Syrup's Blue Potion? (For some reason I wasn't expecting a random old witch. I should have been, though). I suppose I'd probably rather fill it with that than a fairy. (Yes, I know, spending money over just snagging a fairy in a cave).

I just got the Pegasus Boots and am slogging through the (ew I can feel my feet getting slimy, ugh), swamp, marsh, thing.

Had a few setbacks with this game the last few days. Emulator was giving me some trouble and crashing at random, including one time during the boss fight of the Ice Temple, which resulted in me losing over an hour of progress as I hadn't saved since starting the book retrieval thing you have to do before you can get to the temple, which was VERY fun for me 😒. I did end up coming back stronger than before though, so it wasn't too bad, and I'm pretty sure I've sorted out my emulator troubles, so it should be smooth sailing for the rest of the run.
Hugs to you and the other person whose progress blew up in this thread, rip.
Glad everything worked out and that you decided to keep going.

Also, I can't be the only one reminded of Kamako every time I see the great fairy, right? Or is that weird?

Well, I got the Ocarina of Wind! So I'm kinda around the Lake area, running back into town to get the Elder in the library.

So far I'm having a blast! But I'm also playing in small chunks of time to really enjoy my time with it. Went from 12 to 24 cheevos in a recent longer session, so I'd think I'm making steady progress.

The second dungeon is done. Minecarts are fun.

Beat the game

It's been some years since my first playthrough of this game so, despite a few things I could recall, for the most part it was a relatively fresh experience for me.

The things I liked about the game:
The visuals are easily the biggest highlight of this game. One of the best looking games for the GBA by a mile and I'd even say it holds up today. The music is great too, though a lot of it is just reused/remixed songs from OoT, the original tracks really stand out and are just as good. I also really like how hands off it is a lot of the time. One of the biggest problems with the more story-focused Zelda games (especially of this era) was this constant hand-holding and arbitrary roadblocks preventing you from exploring certain parts of the game because the story hasn't given you a reason to go to that area yet (admittedly; this game is guilty of this at certain points as well), but I do like the lack of interruptions and how quick the game actually gets you started on your adventure and lets you figure things out as well. I really liked how multi-purpose a lot of the items are in this game too. A big problem I have with certain Zelda games is just how situational most items are, for 95% of the time they're useless except for VERY specific circumstances (that always end up sticking out like a sore thumb on the overworld), but in this game; I felt every item played its part and may had secondary or third effects to them as well (The lantern for instance being able to light up dark areas, melt ice and also burn certain enemies who have a weakness to fire). The smaller, more compact overworld is also welcome.

The things I didn't like about the game:
I feel a lot of the dungeons in this game are just not all that interesting and quite forgettable to me. Their designs are very hit or miss, but their layouts tend to consistently be not very good across the whole game. I feel as well a lot of their themes and gimmicks are either extremely by the numbers or just bizarrely out of place. The 3rd dungeon for instance, the Fortress of Winds, has nothing to do wind and instead its gimmick is based around... digging (???). I did like how this game was fairly challenging at times, but I felt sometimes it was arbitrary challenge based on how abysmally bad the drop rate for hearts are in this game, and how certain enemies have attacks that do way more damage than they seemingly should. Only being able to equip 2 items at a time does get a bit annoying when you have to constantly open the menu to switch items at certain points, it just gets really monotonous after a while. Also (and this is purely an optional thing, I know), but going for 100% in this game is one of the most boring and time-wasting things you can do seeing as a heart piece is locked behind collecting all 130 figurines, which can only be acquired through what is essentially a gacha machine. I have zero desire to ever 100% this game.

Overall; a good game I enjoyed for the most part and one I think I would recommend to people. Handheld Zelda games have always been on the lower-tiers when it comes to Zelda games as a whole for me, but this is one that definitely breaks the mould and sits up there with Link's Awakening (though I'd still say Link's Awakening is slightly better overall).

Actually i also feel the same way when playing Minish Cap since i also get stuck in the 2nd dungeon and here i am now on the way to the 4th dungeon without even looking into any guide at all
Never played it before, but I'm also happy not needing a guide so far ^_^ Hopefully, I can keep that up ::nervous-prinnyI almost broke down and turned to a guide on the way to the third (current progress) because was not sure where to get the boots, wandering around, but then I thought about it for a minute and then realized where I should go >_<
which compared to the gust jar is also lame.
lol, I thought the same thing! I can't help but think they could have come up with something a little more creative... It comes off a little silly to have a magic stick that has a purpose that is worded so specific >_< And it doesn't make too much sense how it also shoots you out of holes as its secondary function ::thinking

I think the problem is they couldn't make it as if it summons wind from below to flip things over (which I think would make more sense how it will propel you out of holes, like a gust of wind from below, and was maybe the intention) because that would be too close and seem redundant to the gust jar which is also wind...

Now I'm stuck with 21 Kinstone fusions, fusion number 22 is nowhere to be found😑

Well i also kinda think they forced how to use that rod
since to beat vaati third you need that rod to flip the hand over and tbh that's kinda forced

Alright I'm officially stuck. I just finished the wind temple, I've gone around and done a bunch of sidequesting, and I still can't figure out this Library thing. I know I need to get into minime form and get into the Library to talk to that elder guy to get to the water temple but actually doing that just confounds me. I've spent multiple hours today just walking around accidentally doing side quests and getting cumstones and filling up my already full rupee bag and getting a whole lot of nothing done. Very frustrating.

You need to talk with the lady in the front desk she will ask you to hunt books and then after you collect all of them, you finally can meet that oldman

Really? I've talked to the front desk ladies multiple times and never got that quest...
hmmmm now i wonder what could be the problem

since in my case i just talked to the girl in the right side of the front desk then she tell me that she's having a great time since she doesn't deal with the borrower and the lady on the left have a problem about people borrowing books and haven't returned any of it.

Yeah I've had the same interaction. I've seen the books around and have tried to collect them but haven't figured out how, or if I'm even allowed to before getting the quest. All the NPC's talk about collecting the books and I know that's what I have to do, but the lady just won't tell me to. I'll figure it out tomorrow

Fingers crossed the game decides to wake up and fix that for you. I've played games that have had more or less undocumented bugs if you do stuff out of order (Broken Sword), but that shouldn't really exist here, I hope. (maybe it isn't looking so good at the moment.)

Made it into the third dungeon, the wind one, I guess. I like holes that drop you into different places rather than just damage, so, yay.
Those uh, you know, statues with t he question marks. I had no idea what I was doing there. I didn't know a question mark was a kinstone invitation. COME TO THAT I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYONE LOOKING FOR KINSTONES, AM I MISSING SOMETHING?
Anyway I only found out because I accidentally hit a button and opened the menu, so yay?

Yeah I didn't figure out that part until I got stuck and decided to do more sidequesting and started pressing LB on random NPC's. The pattern revealed itself pretty quickly. I'm glad the game never really explicitly tells you stuff like this because if it did I'm sure I would just complain about there being too many tutorials or something
