Preface

Hi everyone,

I just came off of the Pixygarden PS1 patch release and, although I was looking to do Disc 2, I decided to shift gears for a bit and try my hand at something else.

I saw this wacky bomb disposal game and thought it looked so neat and different, and like Pixygarden, it doesn't have an absurd amount of text to translate. I'm really surprised no one seems to have translated this already, so I'll be working on it for a while. Can't give you a release date yet as it's still early, but I wanted to share my progress with you so far.

The game is filled to the brim with STRs and TIMs. There's not that much text and a lot of it is repeated across the stages, so a lot of the translation work I have to do is in video and image editing. The game uses several different font-banks that can easily be edited in a tile editor, with plenty of space for the full Latin/Cyrillic glyph set, so there's opportunity for this game to be put in any European language. The game does have a pretty limited hardcoded glyph per line limit of 16, so I had to update the glyph renderer to allow more (I went with 32 glyphs per line as it fits pretty nicely on the screen without risking going outside the edge).

It's filled with a quirky lines and odd humor. I'll have to do several passes on the translation to ensure it makes sense as you play.

I think a fair number of people have been looking forward to an English patch for this one, so I hope to be able to get it to you in a reasonable amount of time.

Suzuki Bakuhatsu ("Suzuki Explosion") is a PlayStation game released on July 6, 2000, by Enix (now Square Enix). It's a puzzle action game in which an ordinary woman named Suzuki (played by Rin Ozawa ) defuses bombs in a world where everything around her is a bomb.

My Progress So Far

I have extracted and remapped all the game text and completely translated the first few stages. Some later stages have a basic literal translation done by me, but I'll be doing at least a couple more passes to make sure the lines make sense as you play and that they fit on the screen.

Much of the stage and menu-related TIMs have been edited and reinserted (the game features over 1100 TIMs, but thankfully only a few dozen actually need to be edited and many of those are duplicates that only have to be done once).

No STRs done yet, but luckily many of them follow a consistent pattern, so I can probably make a reusable animation or something for myself to speed up the process of adding in text to these STRs. The hardest ones will be the few that need a fair amount of subtitles, such as during the gameshow STR.

Very nice choice! This is an oddball game but it's exactly those kinds of games I live for. Wishing you the best of luck and looking forward to seeing your progress!
Thank you for everything you've done with PixyGarden, as well!

@Haruna_Kamijo you gotta another one here to try now once @kazetrigger is done translating. Perhaps what youve learned from raising pixies and figuring out how to patch roms will be exactly what you needed to be a master pro at this bomb diffusal game. Im excited to see this game come to fruition!

never heard about this one, but looks interesting.

wish you the best in your adventure

Brilliant. Played a few hours of it and found whilst it is possible without understanding Japanese, I would love to able to understand what limited story there is.

This looks really fun.

I still haven't finished raising all the pixies yet but once I've finished prepping the planets for colonization I'd love to try bomb disposal.

I'm glad you tagged me on this, it looks great.

Hey @Haruna_Kamijo dont rush raising those pixies! @kazetrigger has only started translating, u still have time! Let those pixies and planets be properly prepped to produce a plethora of pods ands plants because patience and pruning can positively affect the pretty little persons, the place, and also the parents!

Great to see this being worked on, the Japanese Enix PS1 catalogue is quite wild, including ten made Jack and murder on the Eurasia express, both of which still are only available in the original Japanese.

Pixygarden has been great.

For years I've wanted something that had the same vibe as the chao gardens from sonic adventure. This game has been a lot like that without all the grinding adventure had. My one regret is sometimes raising them without a players guide can be kinda scary. I'm worried I'm raising bad pixies sometimes.

At least with bombs you know pretty quick if you've messed them up.

This is a good review of Pixygarden!
