why do some people call it a psx and not a ps1

Wave Hello GIF by PlayStation

i checked google, here's what the ai summarized as a brief history of the name:
The PlayStation was originally called the "PlayStation X" (PSX) as a codename to distance the project from a failed deal with Nintendo:

  • Deal with Nintendo
Sony had a deal with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM drive for the Super NES, but Nintendo canceled the deal.

  • Focus group feedback
Sony's focus groups gave negative feedback on the name "PlayStation".

  • Sony brand
Some Sony upper management feared that associating the console with the Sony brand would tarnish it.

  • MSX
The codename PSX was chosen to echo the MSX, a home computer standard sold by Sony in the 1980s.
The PSX codename became common outside of Japan, and was used until the PlayStation 2 was released. The PSX was also used in early advertising for the console in North America, but the term was dropped before the launch.

The PS One is a smaller, redesigned version of the original PlayStation.

i had always guessed that the hardware or engine was name "psx". or someone just thought the letter x was cool.

PSX

I don't call it PSX out loud.
When talking I say "the PS One" (Actually "Play One" lol)
But when writing and in the context of roms it's much more common to use PSX, and I am aware this thing exists:

I was going to say there is alrady a PSX console a rare one but still.
But also I don´t cal it PS one because that what the slim model was called
When talking about the first Original playstation I just say Playstation.
Just as I call the first Xbox for just Xbox.

But I guess people likes to confuse them self.

PSX not only makes no sense (it's a sort of prototype name) it just sounds silly and I refuse to use this terminology.

It would be no less silly than to call the Wii by it's proto name, Dolphin, or the 3DS by its prototype name, Citrus.

gamecube was dolphin; wii was Revolution. it seems like whatever the placeholder name is what the fans use later on for game programs.

Yeah I don't mind using them for emulators and such, it's even kind of tongue in cheek in a funny way. Thanks for pointing out my mistake by the way.

I used to be confused as well! I always knew it as the Playstation for the longest time.. I don't think I ever heard anyone call it the PSX ever! Maybe some times the PSONE because of the console they released which was called that but never PSX. Not my friends, my family, not even my dad who used to work in a tech boutique that sold all the consoles back in the day. But then there are tons of magazines, adverts, even old discussions you can dig up from the early internet where they refer to it as that obviously. It feels like the a conspiracy!!

The plot thickens!
But yeah, while it is true calling it PS1 before the PS2 came around makes no sense logically, I like my ducks in neat rows and will retroactively number things accordingly in my mind and in my own organizational schemes. I like naming prequels as zero, too, unless there are already such prequels.

i noticed that was a thing when i was modding my wii. the gamecube launcher was called "Nintendont". the game runner programs had names based off of the japanese name of the system or something related to it. except for the n64. i haven't seen any programs with "ultra 64" in the name.

its easy to mix up the gamecube and wii. the wii is just 2 gamecubes after doing the fusion dance. and the emulator that runs both is called "Dolphin". it's easy to think of the two as one and the same.

I went down a rabbit hole and found people writing it as PSX back in 2000. And the PSX, the video recorder was showcased first in 2003, so people didn't even know that there will be a PSX. However I couldn't find any official articles or at least url paths with psx in it.

Yes playstation. com had a message board. Have fun :)

it probably is a conspiracy. but i read mainly Nintendo power, so i didn't have that problem. :)

I say PS1, with the number. I’d really like to just use “PlayStation”, but Sony, in their infinite wisdom, decided to call the entire brand that, so it’s really confusing not to include a suffix. “PSX” is going to come back to bite you all when the PlayStation 10 comes out!

The real question: Why did people, for the longest time, abbreviate “GameCube” as “GCN”?
