Game Description:

Prey is an Action-Adventure/First Person Shooter video game published by 2k Games and developed by Human Head Studios released on 2006 for Microsoft Windows.

Tommy is a down-on-his-luck garage mechanic, stuck in the middle on who-knows-where on some forgotten reservation, where Native Americans are tucked away out of sight, out of mind.

And then the unthinkable happens! Earth becomes prey to the galaxy's largest predator, a space bound Texas-sized alien that's looking to satiate its hunger with the organic goodness that most populates Earth: Us. And the first course is a certain forgotten reservation.

A Spiritual Awakening:

Tommy and his girlfriend have become prey, his grandfather killed, and hundreds of his tribal nation have been abducted through space-warping portals. Freeing himself, all Tommy cares about is saving Jenny. But the spirit of his grandfather beckons him to embrace his heritage, accept the ancient teachings, and prepare to battle the menace that threatens to destroy all the planet's life. It's a choice between love and responsibility. It's a choice that cannot be made easily.

Innovative Gameplay:

* Built on an enhanced Doom 3 engine (id Tech 4)
* Portal technology adds a new dimension to gameplay, allowing enemies to appear out of thin air and create new and completely original puzzles and gameplay styles.
* Several never-before-seen gameplay elements such as Spirit Walking, Wall Walking, and Deathwalk.
* Highly organic, living environment that itself can attack Tommy.
* Tommy has a sidekick, a spiritual hawk that can help him fight enemies and decipher the alien language of the living ship.
* Multiplayer game support that takes advantage of the unique gameplay styles in Prey.

This game has been fixed to work with Windows 10/11 and has been known to work fine on Linux and Steam Deck (Using Wine/Lutris or Proton)

To launch the game run PREY.exe, settings can be changed with notepad using preyconfig.cfg found in the base folder. Do not change the screen resolution through the game since it will have trouble reverting back to what it was in the .cfg.

To fix the scaling for the game, right click PREY.exe and go to Properties then in the Compatibility tab under Settings click Change high DPI settings and check the box for Override high DPI scaling behavior at the bottom and apply the change.

To change to a different language, run the PREYLang.cmd file and pick the language you want. (Only text will be in the language, but everything has subtitles.)

This has been paired with AntiMicroX and a portable version of it is included in the download along with a gamepad profile I made for the game. Load AntiMicroX before running PREY.exe and with your controller connected (might have to be one recognized as Xbox instead of PS) load the Prey.amgp file. Of course, you can create your own profile and edit all the keyboard keys too, but I think my profile works pretty decent. (on the Github page you can find AntiMicroX versions for Linux as well)

I know its asking too much, but is there an gyro aiming for controllers mod? I only play games on the big screen with a controller

Wow, I forgot this game is abandonware. What a strange but characteristically idiotic corporate decision. I've never played it, but apparently this runs on a forked version of dhewm3, so I really aught to.
Actually this is just the actual retail game files fixed up to run better on modern Windows from a MagiPack repack. It's not using a source port like dhewm3 or a fork of it for that matter. I don't think a source port for this game exists yet (I could be wrong tho, there's projects that popup all over github these days)

I remember this for the Art Bell cameo - one of the only times I have heard him outside of coast to coast am (it's an in game broadcast of the real life radio show though)
I think that makes it more immersive than any other alien invasion stories in gaming

Yes for sure! I kept thinking he could have run to the back or hid under something, but there was no escape. They all got captured. I just remembered there was a room in the ship where they were playing this old timey radio broadcast. I forgot who it was, but it was interesting. Love it when they make good use of media in a game, increases the immersion.
That was art bell - he has been dead for many years now but he had an AM radio show discussing paranormal/aliens/conspiracies and related things - fits very well with the game's plot and events

I always want to know why this company never make the sequel.

Speaking of the jukebox it definitely does have some good tracks on it. When the moment the aliens appeared and abducted the main characters in the bar the jukebox was playing (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult and that felt so badass and fitting. Like that song could have played as default for that scene and it would have been perfect

This is one of the best games ever made. The story is depressing. But I still recommend it even though I don't recommend depressing things. When you start out the game in the diner go play with the jukebox it's got some good classic Rock songs in it. Also go play with the TV. It's got the aliens from the movie killers in space, The ones with the giant eyeballs! Also go stare at Tommy's girlfriend because she is hot and he is young and stupid and doesn't realize how good he has it.

Probably one of the only times I've seen Native American representation in a video game. I think it was handled well and respectable, but I dunno maybe the community got pissed about it back then?
edit: seems they done pretty good with it from what I read about it here. Assassins Creed 3 done even better it seems

The default textures are good but go visit this link and get the high-res texture pack it's simply amazing:

You will have to get a free account in order to download it but it's 100% worth it. And CSmith327, Good looking out on the instructions! But warning to Linux users if you are using old hardware and are one of those people that has nasty opengl lockups on wine, be careful running this. Really amazing ingenuitive first person shooter one of the best games I've ever played.

I've always been curious about this game. I might actually try it now that it's on here. Thanks for the upload. It's stupid that Bethesda reused the name for another completely unrelated game. I'm pretty sure this game wasn't so bad that it needed to be erased from existence.
Game has a big cult following, actually. Considered pretty good, just didn't sell very well from what I understand. An ACTUAL Prey 2 was in development I thought, before it was scrapped for... Prey in space?
