"If a PlayStation account goes inactive for 36 months — three years — Sony has the ability to begin closing the account, which consists of it contacting the owner via email and letting them know they have six months to sign in or request the account be kept open, or it will be closed."

And you can't get your account back.

It is downright abusive! But I think there is a workaround. You can log in to your PSN account on your PC or smartphone, thus foregoing the need to keep your PS4 or PS5 updated.

This is likely more to do with GDPR in europe and whatever the equivalent is in other regions.

By Law, companies cannot keep your data without a reason for a period of time. It's all privacy related. they get fined if they keep that data so this is likely to cover their ass if your account is dormant.

Thanks for the information. I was hesitant about repurchasing Life is Strange cheaply on PC (since I already had it on PS3), now I'm sure I will ::thumbsupwario

This doesn't sound right. Sony said it was a "consumer shift" to digital-only that made them have to comply with their customers' demand that they don't own their games. In some other, hypothetical Universe where Sony didn't care about its customers first and profits a distant second, this sure would sound like some kind of salt in the wound to people who care about games preservation.

If only I knew of some kind of site with a repository that saved games from disappearing, then I wouldn't feel a light choke of panic in my throat.

Microsoft and Sony really have been making asses of themselves lately.

Yep it most likely is. Me and a lad did a bit of digging when this first popped up and it seems that this rule is mostly for the EU. He couldn't find it in the ToS for North America, but did end up finding it in the UK ToS (who also has their own form of GDPR).

In other words, people are basically just click-baiting, while ironically ignoring the elephant in the room where Sony is basically picking and choosing rules based off region, even if those rules exists to prevent companies from hoarding user data.

Minecraft players might be having some war flashbacks right now.

of course they do.. sigh.. wow Im glad Ive been out from them for a while

Make that grave hole bigger for you Sony. You're doing this to yourself. I use my PlayStation nearly everyday, but what happens to people in a life threatening accident where they need years or months of therapy beyond three years? Or they got into long ass coma.

they got the biggest shovel it seems.. yeah, after I bought a PS3 years after an Xbox360 I basically discovered PC and emulation and said nope.. and I rarely buy from steam unless its a sale, and even then I try to find the files.. I always feel like I need them.. Sony clearly just wants total control and the ability to nickel and dime an ever dwindling customer base, especially as prices rise and price out a lot of potential customers

They will be selling at the biggest loss possible. These fuck heads want to be the new Las Vegas. It's all about luxury and appealing to the super rich and wealthy. Even though, most of them could not give a fuck about console gaming, and will get bored with 4-8 months. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay for a $1K+ console that is digital only, and is way riskier than Steam or GOG.

yeah I agree but my fear is they looked at their stats, saw that the majority of their console gamers only buy the same games every year, GTA, Madden, FIFA, and COD.. so they think they will be fine either way.. its another showing that the AAA gaming industry does not make games for you and me anymore.. hell, their first party games outside of Astro Bot was kinda showing who they made games for.. normies, journalists, influencers and people who only buy like 2 games a year.... but they completely lied about the physical purchase stats to get what they wanted, thats been proven..

man 3 years of inactivity is a long time... and they message you giving you 6 more months to sign in...
idk am I weird? this seems fine long as they actually message you beforehand lol.
i'm already against getting a PS6, or really ANY console, from now on
if I didn't get a PS5 for basically free, i wouldn't have one

it is.. i only plug my xbox one in every couple of years to see whats on sale and when my nephews come over and ASK to play halo games with me.. its not a thing I normally think about.. I thought buying a console and the games I purchased meant I owned them.. now, to be fair this was pre current gen when everybody seems cool with "licensing" their games, but the last console I was given as a gift, and the games I bought on it, I thought were mine.. guess Ill just have to learn XBone and PS4 piracy

ok maybe every 8 months to a year, but I still dont think they should dictate to me what I own and how based on internet connections to them

Most "normies" aren't super rich and most aren't going to be able to own a PS6. Forget renting the console at that point. Also, not many games journalists can afford a 1K+ consoles. Even the ones working for mainstream media. The only aiming at the extremely wealthy, super rich, or blind console die hards without any backbone. Doesn't matter if you're a normal gamer, "hardcore gamer", etc. They see everyone as numbers. Even their own so called kind. Numbers with some extra names, but nothing more.

Side bar: gaming has many walks of life from players and developers. I don't care what a person plays or enjoys, so long as they're not ass hats about it. I would not call myself a super nerd. Yes, I've been gaming since Game Boy and 4th console generation days, but I wasn't afraid to pick up a sports title every now and then. Mainly arcade style, but once EA bought the NFL license, I lost interests by the late PS2 era (2006). Or 2K or anyother dev obsessed with sports realism.

Makes me glad I kept my Genesis, GameCube, Wii, PS2, 360, PS4, GBA, DS, and 3DS. I don't need the Internet to play the games I got physically or kept digitally in the 3DS's case.

I won't be too much of an asshole about it, but consider this.
You need a paid subscription for their online service, you pay for a product that you don't even get to own and have no control over if they yoink it out of the network and your console or not, you don't get a say on when that copy might be removed and taken away, mandatory updates and online DRM, etc.

How much "Premium Gaming Experience" do you need before you say enough is enough? This isn't aimed for this website but frankly it's something I question all sony users at large.
The fact that people even got a PS5 despite these things was enough proof for sony to push this all forward.

dude, even in the Army we were super nerds.. but yeah, your right, but normies just buy whatever newest thing is.. but MANY will be priced out.. Sony doesnt seem to care because theyve noticed a ton of their customers will pay more anyway

Just a Inhuman dick move from Sony..sadly its nothing new but it still sucks.
Sony does not need to push us any further and pC gaming and emulation yet they still do.

As someone who grew up with Sony Consoles Ps2/3/4 abd even Ps1 games that hurts I liked the Playstation but I hate what became out of Sony.
For the Players is dead now its Exploit the Pay pigs.

yeah I lost my old stuff in a house fire years ago, but still have my PS2, Xbox, Xbox One.. and games going pack to the genesis.. I kept my copy of Shadowrun and thunder force 3 and 4 on Genesis, Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Lunar 1 and 2, and Wild ARMS 2 on psx.. Xenosaga 1 and 2 (not 3), and Wild ARMS 3 and a few others.. until now.. no, its only cuz I let a friend borrow them when the fire happened... same thing with my original record collection, I only have what I lent out and what Ive re bought since.. Im talking hundreds of LPs and games gone... which is why I cant trust Sony or any other bitch

Dang sorry to hear this Man if my gaming collection would burn down I would lose my mind nevermind that I could not even afford re buying them.

I also do not buy Games that often since I a more on the poorer side so its either on Christmas or Birthday or well a absolute steal like some 360 games that I would buy a game.

yeah Ive never payed for Sony's online services... I did pay for XBox Live for a few years from like 2009 to around 2013 and never paid for that stuff again
