Yeah, this has been weird to me.
DVD's did have decryption keys but they were decided on and left as is. So when people found out about the key, and memed it literally to hell spreading it in all kinds of images and such, Sony likely wanted different approach with Blu-Rays. Still, I kinda want to know what do those stand-alone Blu-Ray players do without internet connectivity? Do those just turn into mush within a year or is there another mechanism with them. Just weird, the Blu-Ray keys makes sense most people say it is it but never heard Blu-Ray players being updated. Maybe knowing PS3 being hacked Sony is giving the keys in updates but it is weird. People have commented that Blu-Rays are way more controlled format that you would think, though if you have updated your PS3 and you have only older Blu-Rays they should work in perpetuity until the PS3 or disc itself break. Still, weird, what are the normal standalone simple Blu-Ray players doing. What I searched and read though, it seems to be the case with BR players in general, there being models without updates in years etc. Though, those might have just a simple key updating service as long as the BR player is connected to internet which is still a wild concept for anyone from 2000's with DVD's and VHS tape collections.
