Do you use it for Blu-rays?Should I update my PS3? It's modded
if not, then why?
I Agree with @SpectreOverflow, i doubt they are trying to Nerf JB ps3's.
But as with any update, Do it at you're own Risk.

Well, you can let us know if it borks it.I was just in the middle of modding a Phat for my friend and grabbed the new update by mistake, I didn't realize they had an update. So now I gotta wait for Evilnat to finish the CFW. Pain.
I play games in itDo you use it for Blu-rays?

Yeah, this has been weird to me.I didnt need to update my ps2 to play dvds made last year..
If it is modded you should wait for proper updates, either to HFW+Hen or CFW. Only thing you likely will be missing until the update is given is online play, if you are even risking it with the mods. Generally agreed upon thing is to wait for updates. But, if you are collecting or looking to collect 1080p blu-rays it is not a bad thing as long as the update is not hiding anything else making updating for HFW and CFW developers harder.Should I update my PS3? Yeah, this has been weird to me.
DVD's did have decryption keys but they were decided on and left as is. So when people found out about the key, and memed it literally to hell spreading it in all kinds of images and such, Sony likely wanted different approach with Blu-Rays. Still, I kinda want to know what do those stand-alone Blu-Ray players do without internet connectivity? Do those just turn into mush within a year or is there another mechanism with them. Just weird, the Blu-Ray keys makes sense most people say it is it but never heard Blu-Ray players being updated. Maybe knowing PS3 being hacked Sony is giving the keys in updates but it is weird. People have commented that Blu-Rays are way more controlled format that you would think, though if you have updated your PS3 and you have only older Blu-Rays they should work in perpetuity until the PS3 or disc itself break. Still, weird, what are the normal standalone simple Blu-Ray players doing. What I searched and read though, it seems to be the case with BR players in general, there being models without updates in years etc. Though, those might have just a simple key updating service as long as the BR player is connected to internet which is still a wild concept for anyone from 2000's with DVD's and VHS tape collections.
Blu-Rays are still alive, 4K blu-rays have been released. There was that "Sony is discontinuing blu-rays!" articles that boiled down to "Sony will stop making empty Blu-Ray discs for home burning." - Other companies might still keep at it for those who archive on writable Blu-Ray media, but no word of commercially pressed Blu-Ray Movies coming to end any time soon. DVD's are still out selling Blu-Rays though, according to some data people quote.I haven't even thought of people who payed 300+ to get a blu ray player, I've never seen one
Dvds still outsell blu rays, and I think they outlived them?
Then I read one of those articles and misremembered; I'll say Ithat at least here the dvd section at stores has always been way bigger than the blu ray ones and I myself own like 8 and the people I know either dont own any or just a coupleBlu-Rays are still alive, 4K blu-rays have been released. Yeah, I personally started to like discs, DVD or bluray, namely used cheap ones when I got myself a decent, used, not that high end 5.1 surround system. Discs was much easier way to find movies with surround sound tracks than most common places you get movies from the sea. I did eventually find that Russian friends are hifi-sea-men of high order so I go ask them when I want them 5.1 TV shows or movies, but will also get discs for cheap, DVD or BluerayThen I read one of those articles and misremembered; I'll say Ithat at least here the dvd section at stores has always been way bigger than the blu ray ones and I myself own like 8 and the people I know either dont own any or just a couple
Also everyone but me streams off their tv, with the picture quality being on par to watching Megavideo off thew ps3's internet browser; like the only high res videos they watch are on their phones when its not noticeable
By the way does sony still make cds? Phillips does
the new update would address that, since it's primarily a blue ray key distribution update. it also probably patches a few exploits.I should check it out, my PS3 doesn't read many of my BRs.
PS3 does not have that many exploits known, and people basically build firmware packages that any PS3 accepts that has downgraded web browser components, unless sony somehow addresses that the one exploit to exploit them all will stay because people backport it to the newer firmware packages. The current exploit was patched already in 4.8X but well, HFW goes on.the new update would address that, since it's primarily a blue ray key distribution update. it also probably patches a few exploits.
i checked on this about a week ago, and the most i remembered was the blur ray thing. i'm used to the updates always going on about "stability and stuff". i wouldn't put it past sony to try something at this point in time, especially after i learned about the infamous "the ps3 is unhackable" thing said back when it launched.PS3 does not have that many exploits known, and people basically build firmware packages that any PS3 accepts that has downgraded web browser components, unless sony somehow addresses that the one exploit to exploit them all will stay because people backport it to the newer firmware packages. Funniest thing being it was extremely hackable, they just software updated the one thing that kept hackers happy and content with the machine out making them interested in hacking the system, from where it was hacked slightly faster than the Wii.the infamous "the ps3 is unhackable" thing said back when it launched.
you'd think at this point that they would just accept it; but that isn't going to happen.Funniest thing being it was extremely hackable, they just software updated the one thing that kept hackers happy and content with the machine out making them interested in hacking the system, from where it was hacked slightly faster than the Wii.
well, it is not like they released an update that did eliminate possibility of modding unless downgraded, which was an arduous hardware nand writer process for next decade if not just slightly less, and an entire revision of PS3's that also would be unmoddable for next decade, if only slightly less. They did make mostly wins against the modding if I would look at the history, just nothing like microsoft did with 360, and then xbox one and onwads, Sony machines keep on getting hacked in one way or another, some people have PS4's, some even have a PS5 modded I think, yet xbox consoles have been unhacked for years, and 360 modding process is not a fun one.you'd think at this point that they would just accept it; but that isn't going to happen.
i wonder what it would take for them to at least accept the inevitability.
yeah, i noticed that too. we just got an xbox emulator and the 360 compiler; but that seems to because the xboxs are basically computers, and making an emulator would be making a program that uses your computer to emulate your computer.well, it is not like they released an update that did eliminate possibility of modding unless downgraded, which was an arduous hardware nand writer process for next decade if not just slightly less, and an entire revision of PS3's that also would be unmoddable for next decade, if only slightly less. and yet my dumb ass is stuck with an unhackable PS3 because I needed to replace my phat and didn't read up online about the propper CFW hackability of the super slims.Funniest thing being it was extremely hackable, they just software updated the one thing that kept hackers happy and content with the machine out making them interested in hacking the system, from where it was hacked slightly faster than the Wii.
