Phantasy Star Portable

I don't get nearly enough chances to tell this story, so here it is.

When Portable 2 first launched, it had a proper MMO-style online play system. When you bought the game, it came with a code to register on PSN and that would give you the key to play online. Pretty standard stuff. This worked just fine in Japan. People who bought the game could play online, people who pirated couldn't.

In the NA release, it was quickly discovered that this key system didn't work. You could play online with a pirate copy anyways. I don't know how true this is, but I read that at some points there were more players online than copies sold. Complaints arose and Sega responded by basically saying, "Don't worry, we'll get it fixed in a patch soon enough." Time went on and on and this promise never happened. All the way until the servers shut down, the online key was never needed to play online.

Portable 2 Infinity comes around and of course people are excited for it. When Sega gets asked if NA will be getting it, they say no because piracy for Portable 2 was too much. Under a broken system that they simply chose to not fix.

Also, one of the back-of-the-box screenshots is of the box you are already looking at.

So it was a sort of Guild Card?
