I know i dont wanna post this, but I had to get it out of my chest. But this morning, I found out Sony will stop making games being released on physically in 2028, and will be digitally only from now on. When i heard of the news, I was like the what in the f**k man. I was very depressed the whole day to hear about that, because usually physically releases are much cheaper to get than digital, and it was your copy to keep right for as long as you own it right. I mean it's bad enough, GTA VI will be on digital only, and now this, i also heard PS3 store is shutting down, but at least that was actually intentional giving the fact the PS3 store existed for 20 years since the launch of the console. But anyways, do you think the future of gaming is just over as we know it guys, or we just have to use PC at this point. Because I recently got a Gaming laptop at my local pawn shop for $500, and its ASUS Rog Strix 2019 that has a Intel Core I7 9th gen, 8GB ram, and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 card, it plays emulators well im using pcsx2 for PS2 games including God of war 2 which is a demanding title just well, I do have to leave the laptop plugged in tho, in order to run it in full speed, because if i play it unplugged it will stutter badly, so im not sure if its just normal for laptops to do this even on high end ones.

It's not dead (it's actually incredibly healthy where it matters most: critical user base and income), but it's in an incredibly sorry state... and it was completely both intentional and preventable.

No. The only thing thats dead is console gaming (unless its Nintendo they will never port their games to PC) if the next Playstation and presumably Xbox is going to feature no disc drive then I see no reason to get them when PC offers better services in the form of Steam, GOG, and the EGS(lol) if you don't any of those options than you can go to other sites.

Exactly, A few big companies falling off isn't gonna kill gaming for good. it'll still live on in some form

I think console gaming is dead, pc gaming is doing fine because, whether they want to admit it or not, you can pirate a game if it's removed from a pc storefront, you can't on console.
This is why pc gamers could justify pc, they can't take a game away from you unless it's online, but console?
Yeah this is a massive mess.

The film industry didn't die when it shifted away from physical media.

The music industry didn't die when it shifted away from physical media.

The majority of sales in the games industry right now are digital, not physical.

The games industry will be just fine.

Problem with your argument is you can still buy them physical, both movies and music, might be expensive but you can and alot of what people actually bought physically they owned before streaming and still own, there's no physical option for gaming.
This is ignoring that literally everything movie and music wise is up on piracy sites.

This is ignoring the fact that I could walk into my local walmart and find an entire section dedicated to DVD's Blu-Rays, and CD's the option for physical is still there because of demand, Sony and in the future Microsoft will take that decision away from us despite there being a demand from a small but notable consumer base.

It might not be dead, but it sure is on its death throes. It's just exploitation that can be expressed as people poking a dead horse in morbid and grotesque ways at this point. I'm tired of looking at games that are coming out now and thus only look at retro videogames now. That's where the magic and gold is.

Full transparency: I was going to argue against this, but I did a bit of research and it turns out sales of blu-rays have been spiking in recent years specifically because shows and movies get removed from streaming services. So maybe you're all onto something here after all.

no, it's not dead or dying lmao.

people hate to hear this but the vast majority of money in gaming these days isn't even in the traditional console market anymore. it's, unfortunately, in mobile games and free to play games.

It's okay! You did your own research to find out what you believed wasn't true and that's better than most people online these days.

No. People are still playing and buying games, but it has not been PC and console only for a long time now. Sony is killing themselves, and are too greedy and too stupid to see it.

An ex-GF & I used to do the yard sale & thrift store thing a lot. I would find a dvd of something that I wanted, and she would often protest "isn't that on Netflix/Hulu?" Maybe, maybe not, and if so– for how long?

I'm glad I didn't listen to her, because she obviously didn't know what the hell she was talking about..

The minutes from the post that Sony has made, I said to myself "I guess I'm a PC user now" Which sucks but I already made that decision when purchasing my PS5 when it launched. I had this aching feeling that this or the next console gen would be the last time for discs. I didn't expect it to happen in the middle/end of the PS5 lifecycle.

I was surprise that physical media in movies and music is actually doing wonders currently.

Nothing to do with this post, but that is the cutest Harvest Moon avatar.

Sony becomes much loyable to actual fans now: actual fans who don't accept the classic media who changed the world of entertainment forever and likes to spend money on streamings.

It's explained why PS6 will be released with a more expansible price than the actual PS5 model, and the company don't like to think for those who can't have credit card to buy games on PS Store.

So, the future of gaming will be on PC, since computers can held various types of games and emulators, depending of boards.

Being a collector/player of physical games this is very sad news. Figured it would be coming eventually. Prices usually drop over time with physical disks at retail so there's no need to by the digital version still selling at a premium. With no physical games they can charge a premium as long as they want.
