The file size is due to the music files on mp3. The actual game is 8MB. To play this on retroarch you have to use the core included, a modified genesis plus core, else the game will play a fake low res "mockup". So go to your retroarch cores folder, backup and delete your genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll and replace it with the one included with the game. After that just load content and find the game .bin.

The Android version posted here in the comments works perfectly, but you have to manually install in a retroarch that has never downloaded the core of Genesis Plus GX, this is the big 'trick'.

There seem to be a few more checks in place. Got a soft lock before fighting the rooftop boss, even with the latest core, so beware.

in android behave weirdly after saving the game it is constant lagging and then freeze entire retroarch... so i do not reccomended to anyone using save feature for now.

after game over the game lag and then freeze.

the issue likely within emulator or the game itself.

i rebooted 3 times after that jeez.

even i updated the game, the game still like that.

do not use save feature the game include save feature after you finish or game over.

I've installed the core on Retroarch/Emudeck but when I go to boot Paprium.bin I get a list of Suggested Cores that doesn't include the custom core I downloaded. What am I supposed to do here? Can I skip the suggested cores or add the custom Paprium core to that list? Thanks.

I tried the Android core on my Android TV RetroArch, no good, it installed on top of my already installed Genesis Plus GX core and broke it, took me a while tinkering with it trying to restore it to its original version.

I guess I'm sol with this game unless somebody makes some kind of an unofficial port, maybe an emulator on an emulator kind of thing, like a mega drive emulator made specifically for this game that is ported to the dreamcast alongside the game, one may dream...cast!

I doubt they will, as there is a lot of controversy surrounding this game in particular, so you can only expect this kind of support from cool folks that see past the drama. It happened with Pier Solar too, in the past.

As darthvaderx mentioned, there is another archive with an updated version of modified core. It comes with source code and pre-compiled binaries for Windows (x86 & x86_64), Linux (x86_64), macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), amd R36S (ArkOS). The game rom & mp3 from this archive are the same as the one posted here except there is an extra "paprium.wav" file (It's a bunch of random sound effects. Pretty sure the original uploader forgot to remove it).

Glad the emulator source code is out there maybe the main Retroarch/Libretro devs can add the features of this fork back into their upstream

i've been in the emulator scene since 97, but this is really the first time (and certainly the last) that i've read this.

how on earth could you hate retroarch?!

I used to hate it mostly because I don't like using a heavy software to run a simple NES game, that's why I still prefer standalone emulators, but truth be told since 2020 I had to rely on it and I've grown to not only like RetroArch but favor it for its convenience, it has gone a long way and is now quite solid.

Here's the core for Linux x64. Built from the current latest version (commit a0b5a03 on 2025-07-07).
It's also renamed with its own core info file so you don't need to overwrite anything.

Same on Android, does not work with RetroArch I'm tried "so64" and "rs36s" cores on RetroArch (Because different Architecture ARM64/AARCH64)
