The file size is due to the music files on mp3. The actual game is 8MB. To play this on retroarch you have to use the core included, a modified genesis plus core, else the game will play a fake low res "mockup". So go to your retroarch cores folder, backup and delete your genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll and replace it with the one included with the game. After that just load content and find the game .bin.

Couldn't this run on sega cd hardware in theory? I know the devs wanted to show off but I'd take a convenient sega cd conversion any day, loading times don't bother me as long I get a convenient way to play it.

I'm sucker for beat 'em up genre so yeah lol.
Same.

If you don't want to overwrite your "genesis_plus_gx.dll" core (so you can continue receiving official core updates), you can rename the modified core to something like "genesis_plus_gx_paprium_libretro.dll". Then create a .info file with matching name ("genesis_plus_gx_paprium_libretro.info"). Use "genesis_plus_gx_libretro.info" as template and change "display_name" and "corename" to something you like.

After you put the .dll and .info files into RetroArch "cores" and "info" folders respectively, you'll get a separate core to use for Paprium alone. However, "genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll" and "genesis_plus_gx_paprium_libretro.dll" do share the same folder for configuration files (this behavior is controlled by .dll file, not .info file).

448 MB? Wowza. I imagine if the game had relased decades ago its cartridge would be like a pole lol.

Be grateful people put a lot of effort to modify the core for this to work.
Even if it isn't for you.
I think everyone is grateful. However, as it's not in a perfect playable state yet, people tend to complain (as they always do). But I am guessing that now that it is dumped and available, it won't take long until we see improvements and ports.

Hold on... "Watermelon"? The "Pier Solar" devs?

Oh yeah I'm definitely going to use a random replacement dll just to play a 500MB Mega Drive game and which doesn't even have FM music. Forget that.

It should be labelled with an entirely new category, not aftermark but Anti-aftermarket.

Dumb question retroarch cores for any system os (example arkos) the genesis core can use chd format? i know psx cores can handle chd roms, but for genesis i dont know if its possible make paprium chd format rom and load it.

exactly like if you're gonna go out of your way to do all this extra stuff, why not put this on the PlayStation 1, Sega Saturn or Sega Dreamcast instead since they all CD based and would make things easier.

I appreciate the dedication for even attempting something like this to see if it's possible and that's cool and all.

Because it is not what you think it is. The game is using some compressed music data (likely 2MB for music) which can be modulated in real time. This aspect is not emulated yet. That is music was recorded from OG cart when it was played and they are used as a hack. But there is no modulation in this version.

Yeah . they didn't want to go with that cause the iso would have been online in 2 days xD
Sega CD version would limit access to the game for users without such addon. Plus I am not sure if it was possible to modulate CD music in real time.

Ok, what format is used in allegedly 2MB or data for music in this game on OG cartridge?
Why music can be modulated on OG cart in real time?
Those mp3 tracks come from audio signal recordings when the game was played from OG cartridge. They were created for people who wanted to have soundtrack from the game and this OST is utilized in this hack.

Got to the final stage and it froze at the start of it, not sure if there's anything to be done about it, was using the retroarch core.
weird. I got the low-res mockup with the replacement core. I'll reinstall and try the original. Either way, what a mess.

So who managed to dump this?

This game pretty much runs on custom code designed outside of the md/gen, the cartridge has custom FPGA Chips that were sanded to obsfuscate their identity, which is why I believe it took this long for it to get dumped properly?

I remember downloading a suppossed dump of this a year or two ago and it only booted that Atari mockup.

Didn't know it also utilized MP3 music, so those cartridges most likely have a 1GB Nand/Flash on them.

Using all of this custom tech makes me wonder if it's even worth going the trouble to make games like these for old consoles. I mean at the end you're just using the Console for video out and controller input.

I remember randy linden was going to do the same with a Re-Release of Doom for Snes.

Saw someone criticize this game saying it's just a generic beat em' up "does not do much to push the medium forward" is what I remember.
