Panzer Dragoon appreciation thread

ok but I have this Panzer Dragoon Remake on Steam... anyone else have or play that? think it originaLLy was released 2020? I didn't reaLLy get to it as it's no-good for SteamDeck but it doesn't appear to be a port so much as a remaster n 'Remake' is even in the name. I don't remember the graphics of this to have the graininess of a 32-bit polygonal dispLay but if ports get spiffed-up in resoLution quaLity then it may be a port? idk for sure yet

Edit: ok I see PD had a PC port in '96. the Panzer Dragoon Remake of 2020 is the one I'm talkin about, which came out also on PS4, Xbox-1, Switch, n even Stadia lol Panzer StreamGoon
It’s easier than the original and still fun but they definitely sterilized and homogenized the aesthetic.

For SEGA if you aren't Sonic or Yakuza, you aren't worth the time. They have a lot of beloved IPs they can't be bothered to give a proper port. I can't help but hate SEGA for this reason.

Insanely underrated series. 1 has some issues, but they are improved-upon by the remake. 2 is fantastic with its routing system and super bar and almost-poetic moments. Saga is just one of the most impressive RPGs I've played. Such a rich setting, wonderful art style, sophisticated storytelling... and the gameplay is a fantastic fusion of real-time and turn-based elements.

I think the games wouldn't even be appreciated by modern audiences. 1 and 2 are too arcade-y and Saga is too beholden to a type of sci-fi/fantasy storytelling that has fallen out of favor for not being obvious enough. It reminds of Moebius, Gene Wolfe novels, desertpunk...

It´s sadly true, I wouldn´t say I hate Sega for that reason but they do make some really bad decisions when it comes to remembering their old franchises.

i think what worked for Sonic, Yakuza, and SMT/Persona is they are all rebellious in spirit. They resonate with players. Sega has always been punk. They've always been rock n roll. That's when they succeed. Not trying to just quote the new CEO, it's true. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, think about it. All those games are about either fighting the man or taking care of things yourself when you can't trust the law.

Hate was a bit of a strong word, the feeling is moreso bitter, but I don't dislike SEGA comepletely. It'd be nice if they gave more attention to their older IPs, whether it is through remakes/remasters or a new entry. At the end of the day, SEGA is a business and they'll gravitate to whatever works best for them, which is appealing to the modern audience. Maybe if Panzer Dragoon was to get a new entry with modern graphics and controls, it'd bring new fans, but I feel like the chances of that are impossible. Especially since it seems like current SEGA prefers to stick to modern setting.

On the bright side, I did find out there was a Panzer Dragoon Remake on Steam/Switch, with a physical version, released in 2020 by MegaPixel Studio S.A and published by their parent company, Forever Entertainment S.A. From what I've read, the differences aren't huge aside from modernized graphics and controls with the second game currently in development. I guess I spoke too soon, though the game's remaster being outsourced to a company that isn't well known caught me by a surprise.

Well, the remake isn´t precisely loved, but at least is a modern way to experience the original game.
An the Zwei remake is kinda on development hell rn.

If I had such controller, it would never feel the touch of my hands! Ever!!!!!

Imagine how dificult it must be to clean that beautiful thing.

it's like Zwei but better
I would agree that I prefer Orta, but I also admit I need to spend more time with Zwei. I also know that it’s somewhat of a hot take in the Panzer community to prefer Orta to Zwei, as much of the community prefers Zwei.

I've only played Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox. It's one of the best rail shooters I have ever played but it does have a slight learning curve that I had to overcome.
“Slight”.

It’s a very heavy learning curve. Not if you have played PD before, but most people have not. I know Orta was my introduction to the series and it nearly made me stay away from the series because of how hard it was from the jump.

I will say: stay with it. Orta may have a steep learning curve, what with your dragon having multiple forms to consider combat options with, but it’s a genuinely fantastic game that builds off the gameplay concepts that Zwei had by taking the dragon evolution and combining it with the swappable abilities from a game like Gradius.
