Nights into Dreams... and Sonic CD are Naoto Oshima's masterpieces when it comes to art direction.
Yup! Can’t disagree!

I still am a Blinx fan though -_-
Please play Blinx 2. That game isn’t talked about nearly enough.

Man, this game is something so magic I can´t even describe.
Hope someone make a thread like this but talking about Burning Rangers.
Dude, I would love to! But I haven’t played Burning Rangers. Too expensive for me to take the plunge lol!
I’ll definitely play it when I finally get either a Satiator or Saroo. I love the Saturn so muchhhhhh!!!!

Funny since It's apparently the same engine and BR is referencing NiD:

Frozen Bell being Eliot's second level:

Gosh, never knew that. How amazing!
As for the same engine I cannot be sure as I don't find sources. Like how Rent a Hero may or may not reuse Phantasy Star II or III's engine but maybe some parts of the code may have been shared.

I kinda like when Sega references other games (especially outside of Sonic).

There are plenty like in Sonic Adventure DX and Adventure 2:

We could almost call Nights the sister series of Sonic.

What I love about the SEGA characters from the Dreamcast era is that they feel like a connected family. I think that’s helped the Dreamcast’s legacy IMMENSELY to have all these cameos.

I hadn’t and haven’t played many of the games referenced yet, but I know all these characters thanks to SEGA actually acknowledging they exist. I’d like SEGA to do that with MORE characters, or perhaps release more than just the same 40 Genesis games every year, but that’s neither here nor there.

I knew of NiGHTS when I was ten. Eleven years it took for me to finally play their game. It was worth it.

Phantasy Star Online had a ton of cameos, from the weapons to the mags (especially with Opa Opa and Pian). I'm a bit sad that PSO2 and NGS mostly have 3rd party crossovers rather than in-Sega cameos...

I could understand the lack of a Saturn collection because of how hard it's to emulate the hardware but it's annoying how they seem to ignore the 8-bits (GG and SMS) and Dreamcast despite being able to make proper compilations...

Another issue is that, from what we know, they actually don’t have a lot of their old source code. For most of their games. And so that makes games from harder to emulate systems even more unlikely to return.

To keep the thread on topic: notice that whenever they port NiGHTS, it’s the PC version. They don’t have the old Saturn source code, I guarantee you.

I fell in love with that pinball minigame in SA1 as a kid.
I´m also aware that the Burning Ranger´s theme can be used as hall music in some phantasy star games.

The DLC quest Central Dome Fire Swirl was my first contact with that game. Considering that both were made by the Sonic Team and that BR was the technical basis for PSO in several mechanics and game design elements (four main zones with hallways and rooms among other things) made it quite fitting.

If someone asked me why I prefer the first Sonic Adventure over its sequel I'd show them both Twinkle Park and that Pinball's theme.

According to lore bits in the franchise, Jackle is supposedly a failed Nights/Reala:

It's implied that creating a high rank one takes a lot of energy so Wizeman (the main antagonist of the franchise) couldn't always consistently make one.

That's interesting to know how Nights themselves is a Nightmaren, the antagonist faction of the franchise, while still being a hero/protagonist. I think Yuji Naka said that Nights is basically a mischievous being to contrast with Sonic being more of a traditional hero.

I can even talk about Selph but that's a rabbit hole I wouldn't go too much into and there are videos for that.

Welcome back to the dream, NiGHTS gang! Don’t think I forgot about this thread!
Today I got a package in that was predominantly Virtua Fighter stuff, but I also came across the soundtrack for the original game!

These old SEGA soundtracks are a little obsession of mine. I found that the Virtua Fighter 2 soundtrack I got tries to recreate the feeling of the music as you hear it in the context of the game while on the album, so I’m excited to see what this album does! If nothing else, it’s cool to own something new that’s NiGHTS related.

I need to deep dive on NiGHTS lore now.

I love those 90's renders.

The lore isn't too deep yet it still has many elements you don't get in game.

Like, one of the "bullies" in Eliot's intro is called Roger.

This channel has some nice datamining/beta stuff

It's a big shame that for Journey of Dreams they've rebooted the story with new characters rather than expanding on Twin Seeds and the two protagonists...

I am still wondering if JoD could've worked as a "prequel"
before Wizeman could've gotten resurrected by Reala as he is nowhere to be seen after his defeat (he doesn't die on-screen).

I've said it before but I'm associating Sonic with summer while Nights reminds me of winter.

omg its fizzaroli from helluva boss
I've always wondered why Sega took inspiration from the Commedia dell'Arte for Nights.

sonic certainly has that swagged up vibe of bossing up and getting paid. in the summer time
i attribute this to the ceaseless sex suns, central square, wave ocean, and so on

All I want to know is WHY? all you do is fly through rings like Superman 64.
I think you're omitting one important detail that changes many things: you have a 2.5D perspective.

Also Superman 64 didn't invent the whole "flying through rings" gameplay concept, Pilotwings also had that:
1750324723225.png

Then again in Nights you certainly have much more control over your character than the glorified plane that Superman was in 64 and you are at least not penalised too hard if you missed one. If Nights was just all about passing through rings and you'd had to restart the level then the game would've been tedious.

Furthermore it's also about collecting the blue spheres to destroy the cages containing these sparkling spheres in the level, the rings are only for getting a better score by chaining them. Sure, you'll have to get a minimum rank to get to the last level but this is why memorising the optimal path in bonus mode after destroying the cage is a good idea for a better score. It's a pure arcade game and the timer isn't about getting to the goal first but how much time left to get a good score instead.

Great... Pilotwings is your defense? another crappy game to defend even crappier nights. Imagine all the angry kids at Christmas when you got your new SNES or N64 and the only game your parents got you was Pilotwings. Even worse you get a Saturn (YAY!!!) and all you have to play is Christmas Nights... GASP!! ::angrygenjin::badpc

And what is the issue? You may not like the game but thinking it's just about going through rings (which is probably the only thing it got in common with Superman 64 anyway) is a bit disingenuous because you're ignoring the rest of what I've said about the game (and at least it doesn't have those closed off level with bad camera and weird objectives that requires tight timing).

It's also an arcade game about learning paths, having to chain link the orbs and the rings as well as doing paraloops (the main gimmick of the game which also gets to vacuum bonuses that are out of reach). It's a simple yet effective gameplay loop (pun intended).

If the only thing you've learnt about the game is the whole "going through rings like in Superman 64" it clearly shows you haven't actually played the game (or at least no more than 5 minutes).

The issue is: As a Saturn lover and an admitted Sega fanboy I'm tired of people saying this turd is like the best thing since sliced bread, there were so many better games on the Saturn. I actually couldn't last more than 3 minutes playing this (honestly I was ready to go at the title screen)...
