That is how it is though. The show was made in 2000's, and not every hikikomori is a nerd, which is kinda how it was. It is not inconsistent, not every antisocial person is a nerd and know what azumanga is. The mentality of hikikomori people... Is like that. The contradiction of easy modern life but mentality in a gutter. Hikky neets are kinda annoying, that keep digging a hole for themselves. That hole that is dug, mentally which becomes easier to dig deeper than get out of is the point of the show. It is frustrating. And it is sadly realistic even today. That is more likely why people like the anime, not because they connect with the character but brutal critique mixed with understanding where the characters are not good. It's been years for me since I watched it and it was not the most special show to me, kinda underwhelming but exploration it goes through for several characters is ok. It is not up to date with modern explosion of shut-in nerds or how hikikomori are in west especially in places with welfare systems. The phenomenom is just that different in past, and in Japan.
