Name an anime which conned you in to watching it.

Also they are doing NFTs for Captain Laserhawk so... fuck them
Imagine still trying to pull NFTs after the crash in the current year

I have Another one for my Regrets list

Elfen Lied

To keep it short, when I was young adult I decided to watch it because I thought EDGY = Mature! Yeah Im too old to watch Pokemon, give me something "Mature"! I'm a BIG BOY NOW!
As an Adult now I think this anime is a narrative disaster, a lot of cartoony evil moments (the flashback with the puppy's death is so forced) exist to torment the protagonist, characters are dumb and this exists to please people with Guro fetish

"Yes i know you killed my family in front of me as a a Child and traumatized me for life causing me to get amnesia, but all is forgive because you are a cute anime girl HAHA" :D ::200mad

The Lemotif, Lilium, is still amazing
Elfen Lied is the poster child for edgy and pretentious not equalling dark and mature. Maybe the original manga was better, maybe not. What matters is the anime series, and it's one I will happily avoid until the end of time.

The fact shows like Elfen Lied and Netflix's fake anime are what Anitubers love to glaze only makes things even more sour to me.

Shiki is so dreadfully boring that it put me off watching anime for years.

I think horror in anime can be extremely effective, yet the show, which markets itself as horror, doesn't live up to it's intriguing premise (vampires take over a sleepy village). I kept waiting for something to happen, and nothing ever did.

Rising of a sheild Hero taught it would be good but utter ass.
Yes, more of us 🤝
I feel like crazy that during the period the anime was airing EVERYONE WAS PRAISING IT!
like bruh... this anime's Narrative and world building is complete ass
Re:Zero conned me in to neat fantasy but nope MC is a Moron hornron for a shitty girl and just boring story.
I'm actually interested in Re:Zero, but I also have REALLY LOW TOLERANCE on idiot protagonists ::thinking

Sword art online I taught hey a little darker .hack like anime but nooo it´s a Harem anime with an MC dumber than a fish stick.
.HACK// MENTIONED 🖐️::fire
Log Horizon is also pretty decent from what few I watched of it!

Sword Art Online and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race!
I blame this anime 100% that we are getting non stop Isekai with Gary stu protagonists and power fantasy slops now
The Genre has been oversaturated

I never thought I would agree with someone who unironically quoted Ted Kazcynski's bogus Anti-Technology Essay, but here we are. You're bang on the money.
Sword Art Online has done so much damage to Japanese Animated Television, not unlike how Rick and Morty and Steven Universe did damage to Western Animated Television. In fact, I'd dare say that SAO's damage was even WORSE, because even popular franchises sold out to chase the trends introduced in SAO.

I don't know if I'll catch flack for this, but i'm an unironic fan of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Yes, it's flawed. Yes, the flashbacks do outstay their welcome by the last half of the show. And yes, from "Flashing Blades" and "Lacus Strikes!" onward, it's increasingly flawed and a shitshow respectively. But before and during "Flashing Blades", it's a solid anime with a unique artstyle, likable characters, an intriguing world and solid action. Even post-"Flashing Blades", it has some good moments, and after watching Gundam sell out to chase the light novel bandwagon with The Witch from Mercury (with a side order of yuri romance), I'd happily watch a show that has a soul over one which sold its soul long ago. Better uneven but with a heart, than assembly line slop made to tick boxes.

This meme has been so popular and quotable around, I never questioned its origins ::linkmouthcover::zeldapoggers

I agree with both the Rick and Morty and Steven Universe ones too, despite used to be a fan of both

Agreed, i also initially wanted to explore this, as i was told it was like Lain, and i wanted to try out other thought provoking stuff. How wrong that advice was, and while indeed edgy for the time, the story was a little underwhelming and confusing.

Part of me wanted to un watch this and demand a refund for my time.

Probably Samurai Deeper Kyo for having a pretty cool PS1 video game but then actually watching the anime was painful because there will be times where it becomes a straight up slideshow. The worst part is that it becomes common in a tournament arc early on and because of how lacking in animation the action scenes were I stopped watching at episode 7.

QUESTION: How is gore and "humans are bastards" anvil dropping akin to a deliberately confusing, but philosophical multimedia project?

It is not, and that was my point. A Friend told me they had similar themes, and i came out after watching this thinking W*F?

And hence my feeling of:

"Part of me wanted to un watch this and demand a refund for my time."

Yeah, that was the question I wanted to ask your friend.

I am not a big anime person, but I met a girl in highschool who was, and we started bonding over the few that I did like. We started doing some watch parties, and while searching for our next movie I stumbled across this cool looking Blade Runner meets Berserk-esque 80's anime Wicked City....
Yeah...
1111.jpg

I deliberately did little research so both of us will go in blind, so I didn't know that a good chunk of it was demon erotica.
That watch party was really awkward, but kinda funny. Overall I still like this movie, especially its stylish action scenes and lighting (the director of this movie also directed Ninja Scroll and its so obvious), but it's one of those that you shouldn't watch with other people in the room.

Also like many people said here Darling in the franxx.
I had to stop around episode 6 cause I hated most of the characters.

I am a massive fan of this one as a movie and for the fact that this is part of the Demon City Shinjuku extended universe of books by Hideyuki Kikuchi, who also wrote Vampire Hunter D and a wind named Amnesia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_City_(novel)

He was a power house author back in the day.

But i agree this is not for the faint of heart, and would be an awkward watch if your not aware going in.

One of the reasons me and my partner are together, is the love of this Author.

-sonny boy : it got me bored
-tekken bloodline : sorry, but whats that
-Higurashi go : cringe, and doesnt need to exist since the vn already said all the story needed. I'm also mad, because some people will watch it thinking it's a remake instead of reading the vn ::bonzistares
-kill la kill : watched it because I borowed a dvd. The art style is nice, but that's it. Special mention : Mako

Wicked City... ...demon erotica.
lol I think Wicked City is also a pretty good example of getting conned into watching something. Sure, ok, maybe it's not a common recommended title that's thrown around, but it's brought up enough & people try to hook you in with, yeah: "This is so kickass! It's got Berserk vibes! It's got The Thing vibes!"

Maybe for the first 10 minutes! Most of the movie really just is demon erotica. Not saying that's a bad thing! But as far as story goes it's actually kinda average & pretty forgettable. Oddly enough I think I watched Bio Hunter shortly after & that one was surprisingly a very pleasant watch.

I can see that. While I thoroughly enjoyed it the whole thing was basically a love letter to animation & the behind the scenes of it. But that's just the gamble we take with Masaaki Yuasa ::cirnoshrug

Also, Yuri is my Job got me hyped cuz I was (and am) on a huge need of yuri, but it was so boring and the artstyle was so unappealing I dropped after the third episode.

I think my time with the Tomo-chan Is A Girl anime fits the bill here. I remember I liked how the premise sounded, and at the time vaguely remembered people talking up the manga, so I decided to give it an honest watch.

By the time I finished the episode where Tomo's friend Misuzu was like mad for no reason, I started having serious doubts about the show. Tomo kinda just felt like a tsundere. Misuzu was just an unfunny and unpleasant person, so much so that I had no idea why anyone would even want to be her friend. And I'm realizing now that I actually remember nothing about Junichiro other than that he liked Tomo. All that kept me watching was Carol (I found her to be pretty entertaining), and the hope that it would get good at some point. I'm sure sunk-cost was in play too lol

The most baffling thing imo happened after the episode where something a character said off-hand cut Carol deep enough that she had an emotional outburst over it. People were in the comments of that episode praising the hell out of the writing and how deep a character Carol was... I was like "HUHHH?!" like was I watching the same show they were? Was I being pranked?? Is a silly goofy comic relief character being upset one time what constitutes good writing??? I was genuinely confused.

I also kind of take issue with dudes saying they like "tomboys" when they really just mean a big boob girl with short hair. And while Tomo doesn't really fit that description all things considered, I think she does feed into that fetishization, which kinda ends up being the final nail in the coffin for me with the show.

At the end of the day tho, I can't really say it's like truly awful. I think maybe my expectations going in were too high, but I do dislike it thoroughly, and I definitely shoulda just stopped watching after Misuzu was mad for no reason. Thanks for coming to my TED talk lmao

i like tomboys, short hair or long hair. a couple of characters that i've come up with fit the description of a tomboy; one has short hair and one has long hair. i have nothing to go against the large breasts arguments, since both of my tomboy characters are very well endowed.
i'm pretty sure that there are some tomboys out there that don't fit the stereotypical mold.

seasonal anime are terrible, i've learnt to filter out a lot of trashy power fantasy shows.

but one that REALLY conned me with a great pilot was Ninja Kamui.

10/10 first episode 10/10 OP, it got so trash in the later episodes.... what a shame.
also probably hot take but jjk started out great but just fell apart after shibuya incident. irredeemable.

don't @ me for my opinions

Tomboys are great! I just think it's a shame that so many in anime fall into gooner bait territory, but that's a whole other conversation. Really my last paragraph there was only tangential to my experience with the Tomo-chan show, I probably didn't even need to include it now that I think about it 🫤

well, this is an thread about anime shows that lured you in on a good or great premise only to become disappointing, more or less. your experience with it is important. characters, story, pacing; something inevitably ruins the show and ends up disappointing you in some aspect.
the sex appeal tactic is quite common to use. you need to catch someone's attention to draw them to your product, and then you are supposed to keep them engaged with a good story and characters. the first ghost in the shell movie is an excellent example of this. i got several video games solely based off of there being a hot chick in the game and those ended up being great games. muramasa the demon blade, bayonetta, disgaea 2 and a couple of others.
the main point is, you got to get the viewers attention with something flashy, and then reel them in with something more substantial.
