Mega Man Megathread

Same with not doing a crossover with another action platformer such as Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
Demon's Crest springs to mind. It's a G'nG spinoff but it played more like Megaman due to new abilities gained as you progress. Some of which enable access to new areas/ secrets. I always thought of it as a move towards more open world action platformer games coz of the overworld map and town.

I don't think Mega Man platformers and Metroidvanias are compatible with each other.
I actually agree to a degree. At least how classic and X are laid out, with how you learn the obstacles from carefully constructed courses in levels.

I love ZX and Advent, but they are a very different kind of Mega Man. And better off for it! They feel more grand a lived in than earlier titles, which is actually a major flex because the X series is HELLA lived in feeling.

Classic will always be my baby though, since I rock with its pace and aesthetic the most. That particular world has a grip on me and hasn’t let go for the past decade of my life.

It would be cool to see the original Megaman X remade in a Metroidvania style. If I had programming knowledge and didn't have a bunch of real-life problems to worry about, I'd make it myself!
I mean, someone managed to make Castlevania 1 into a SotN-style Castlevania game, so I wouldn't say it's impossible.

Because no would would be able to withstand that many double door transitions.

Not telling you. :)
Fine.

But I'll still argue that MM being non-linear in the way you can progress levels and abilities you get are still soft MV elements (especially going to previous levels with some of the powers).

100%
Also another genre which I feel Megaman also had soft elements of is souls-like games. The bosses are all about learning patterns and go from being impossible to making them look like a joke once you learn them. The sense of tension and reward once you beat them. The limited tries and having to go back and start the level again. Megaman did it first!

What if Mega Man really had a reboot in early 2010 as a FPS like Doom 2016 and enjoyed success? I bet we would be in another timeline

Mega Man is not Metroid. There's no reason to make a Mega Man FPS beyond pandering to Westerners.
Megaman was popular among westerners right?

Well said. The day Megaman goes fps is the day I give up on the series.
Was just playing devil's advocate
What about Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch? It was a good fangame under GZDoom.

Play Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch, they pulled it off and made it great.
I don't even like a lot of FPSes but I'll play TF out of MM8BDM.

The Doom Engine (and its derivatives) is still great despite the many years that happened.

MM 8-bits Death Match and Sonic Robo Blast 2 are undeniably some of the best games in their respective franchises.

Even that one Castlevania mod convinced me that CV could have worked in 3D.

On a side note I wouldn't mind seeing the equivalent of Sonic Mania but for Megaman as a hommage to the classic series.

Even so, Mega Man is much more inspired by Japanese pop culture than Metroid. Making Mega Man a FPS simply doesn't make sense.
If it worked for Metroid despite being a japanese series then why not MM? Of course, as a spinoff since it's not exactly the same gameplay.

I was the first to think that MM couldn't have worked as an Action RPG yet Battle Network worked.

We already have that. It's called Mega Man 9 and it's terrible.
MM9 was a sequel without reusing previous entries.

But what made it terrible?

Mega Man already has a reputation (whether deserved or not) for being the same thing over and over again. Why would Capcom make a game like this? That's just asking for trouble.

Maybe if they didn't make it always the same bad guy at the end of every game in every series variation.
Post automatically merged:

Oh, it's Dr. Wily/Sigma/Weil again, all of the main cast has remained clueless up until the end while the audience knows exactly who's behind things.

I used to think that, too.

Then I played Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chousensha and Super Adventure Rockman.

Suddenly, the idea of Dr. Wily always being the bad guy didn't seem so bad.

This is a nostalgic nod though.

Back then there was a retro comeback of the 8-bits era.

And it's funny that Capcom had that reputation yet people are praising the remakes of the older RE games despite using the same kind of gameplay we got since 4 (over the shoulder TPS).

Zelda is still loved despite Ganon coming in most games. Same with Bowser in Mario or Robotnik in Sonic (in fact people got tired of the kaijus overtaking the place of the last boss in several games).

Maybe Kirby managed to have varied final bosses but then again most of them are technically various forms of Dark Matter.
