Mega Man Megathread

Now,  that is a banger!
HELL YEAH! Another X3 PSX ost enthusiast.
I find Explose Horneck to be a huge favorite of mine.

thinking about replaying Command Mission soon. Between building the X model kit that looks closest to that game and it being such a unique experience in the series I'm kinda drawn to it again currently

I've always wanted to try it out, but never could find an opportunity. I'd love to hear about what makes it so unique in the series.

It's Megaman but (and i just learned this part) apparently made by a bunch of the team that made breath of fire! Its JRPG Megaman X made to be more story focused. And there's some cool things with how combat works iirc you could use multiple weapons in a single attack or something to that effect if i'm not mistaken

It resembles final fantasy x a little bit with how you can see the order of the turns.

Once I’m free I’ll type a rant comparing wrath of cortex to Megaman x8

I am now gonna post the Wrath of Cortex vs Megaman X8 rant I promised

Megaman X8 and Wrath of Cortex, two games I grew up with, one identical fate

For the uninitiated, these bare a shocking number of similarities. They’re not simply just games that are less liked in the fandom, but they share scarily similar backgrounds.

  • Both are developed not by the same team that made the original beloved games.
  • Both are a full hardware ahead of the aforementioned games
  • Both are considered forgettable or mediocre in a lot of areas
  • Both are the end of their series
  • Both are also riddled with gimmicky levels and the games feel unfinished
Now, I grew up with these two, so I feel I have more familiarity. I also replayed X8 just now but not WoC, but I suspect my replay will have similar opinions.

Simply put, despite their flaws, i still feel I love these games.
I don’t think they’re that good, but it takes a great degree of honesty to realize you can still love games that are messy.
I can fully understand the hate for these games but… x8 really helped me mentally in the past few days. It restored a sense of happiness I felt I lost, it helped me close a chapter in my book. For that I’m really grateful.

I think this is something that applies to more than just video games.

A lot of people (especially the so-called "Internet reviewers") act like that you can't consider something flawed and still like it, or worse, treat doing so like some kind of strike against one's character and tastes.

If anything, I feel it's more honest to acknowledge flaws in your favorites than to act like they're perfect.

I can't believe I forgot about this until now, but...

Happy 37th anniversary to Mega Man! Let's hope the next year will be kinder to you!

Atmosphere is a surprisingly uncommon topic in Megaman threads however if I ask myself what my favorite Megaman is atmosphere wise I’d probably say Megaman 3 with 4 being a close second

Lyrics

My favorite thing about Binetsu isn't even the song itself (although it is very good), but the fact it's a love song, of all the things.
Nice bump.
I always welcome appreciation of jp Megaman songs.

I just noticed that Mega Man X3 and Man Man 8's openings have a similar theme of showing a loose interpretation of the main character's past adventures.

Enjoying long time ago, megaman 2, megaman 5, megaman 8.5 (megaman & bass / rockman & forte), x1, x4, x6 (for me, the core of this game is rescuing the 128 reploids, not finishing it lol), zero 1, 2 and 4, zx, legends 1 & 2... megaman network transmission and wily wars / megaworld.

That is definitely a pretty good connection to draw.
Hmmmm
On that note…
Here’s another wild opinion: I think double is a pretty cool character

I don't care about Double, but at least he doesn't exist just to die and give Zero more reasons to angst (yes, I don't like Iris, how could you tell?)

On the contrary, disliking Iris is good in my book ?

Speaking about Mega Man X4, I never understood why people praise its story. But then again, I don't care about the stories in Mega Man games, so...

X1 has a better story. Heck even x8. In my eyes almost none of the stories are good. The only bit liked is where Double says “see you in the afterlife”.

In addition, X4 is where the writers really started propping up Zero at the expense of X, leading to X5 where entirety of the story revolves around him.

I wonder if people only say that about x4 because it has fmv cutscenes and voice acting thanks to being a ps1 game (even if the dub was like that...) while the earlier snes games could only convey their story through text dialogue and their main menu openings.

I actually really liked x1's backstory with Dr Cain and his contrast with Dr Light. Instead of being careful like Light was with X, he just cranked out reploids like he didn't care and lots of them went ax-crazy as a result. I think it made a really nice point about how with technology for every person who's worried about the impact of their inventions there's someone else who doesn't care and wants to "move fast and break things" even if it leads to terrible consequences for society.

I haven't finished any x games other than x1 and x2 yet, but from what I've heard the later games went back on that by turning Dr Cain into a Dr Light expy and saying that reploids were malfunctioning because of a virus instead of his irresponsibility, which is a shame.

A few days ago was my first time watching this clip in Japanese
I couldn’t fathom how phenomenal the jp voice acting is
I can see someone being sold on the story from the acting alone
