Mega Man Megathread

Yeah, Mega Man 8's sprite work is pretty good. They even reused much of it for Mega Man & Bass.
It was better used there imo. MM8 had really cluttered visuals that was all over the place, it was almost eye cancer which is a huge issue cuz Visual communication is vital. Rockman & forte fixed this immensely and it was easier to absorb.

Not to call 8 terrible, I just don’t like it :/

Bruh, same. I remember getting actual headaches from playing Clown Man's stage.

X8 has my favorite X story. I think X games as a whole have really weak stories. And x8 still fails as a story due to being the only X game with a sequel bait. Because why do it in the first 7 games? Clearly the 8th game is the PERFECT time to sequel-bait!

That aside, X8 incorporates a cultural aspect of Japanese storytelling I truly admire. The west have their hero’s journey and three ace strtcture, those are fine, but I really like Japan’s non linear template a bit more. I should note however a format isn’t inherently good, execution matters and I believe X8 incorporates it fairly well.

X8’s mavericks dialogues are the best due to being so dynamic. Now one silly bit of narrative here is how x8 is trying to sound mature by saying it’s the first game where mavericks go rogue of their own volition, which is later proven to be both wrong and completely meaningless since X games’ concept of free will is already finnicky (let’s not forget that there’s not only an afterlife, but reviving reploids is illegal. Robot murder and robot boobs are a very serious thing here. These games are dumb).

But what’s cool is how dynamic these scenes are. They change based on your progression and how early or late you fight the mavericks.

If you fight them early, they make oblivious remarks and are obviously lying.
But if you fight them late, they fess up and admit everything. But here’s the kicker, they don’t admit it in an “aha! Liar liar pants on fire!” There’s no feeling of victory. Because the way they admit it is incredibly creepy. Almost like they’re part of a cult.

Wait, X8 has a story? I honestly didn't notice /lj

I think It's time to settle this ancient debate once and for all:

What Bass's hair look like under his helmet?

Discuss.

A bit if boring answer but I’d go with some that fits his colour scheme, so brown.

Funny thing is, a lot of people think Bass is blond simply because Zero is.

Personally, I'm black hair truther.

More specifically, I think Bass's hair look like this:

Speaking of the X games, I always found it hilarious how they emphasize Reploids having free will as the main thing that separates them from robots of the Classic series, only to have most of them be evil because of the Maverick/Sigma Virus, making the whole point moot.

“Maverick? I’m no maverick. I’m doing things of my own free will”
Proceeds to join a robot cult

Also, IIRC Colonel has an AI flaw that makes him incapable of making peaceful decisions, meaning he doesn't have free will either.

Yeah. Honestly we should just lock up Dr Cain. It’s his fault reploids are stupid. X being the original android means he was the only one truly incorruptible, but Dr Cain was like “damn this Dr Light guy spoke a lot of gibberish but I’ll copy his homework anyways” and “Replicated Androids” AKA reploids were born.

IMHO, the main problem wasn't that, but the fact that the humans decided that creating sentient beings with free will just to be their slaves was a good idea.

It's kinda like giving birth to a child, immediately throwing them into the streets, and then expecting them to grow up to be a well-adjusted human being.

Huh sounds like my childhood. Err, I mean, yeah it is pretty screwed up. Also humans kinda don’t exist. Cain is the only human that ever existed and it’s kinda hilarious.
Also X8 is the Bible.

Also also, the whole "Reploids have free will, Classic series robots don't" idea implodes on itself because Ballade, Bass, and King all have rebelled against Dr. Wily on their own.

The only reasonable explanations for this are:
A) Classic series robots do have a free will, after all, or
B) Dr. Wily is such a dumb fuck he can't be bothered to program his robots to be loyal to him.

I hate how Archie comics try to explain it.
X: you got a good spirit, kid!
Rock: nah, I was just programmed to help others.
“Help others” is still free will, Flynn!! It is too vague, it requires cognitive thinking, aka sentience, to make complex independent decisions like this.
Then again maybe I’m reading too deeply into Flynn’s writing. He was way too persistent about continuity though which is an issue with his writing. His Megaman comics were a bit odd. It’s cool that he respected the lore, but being a writer of a non canon comic doesn’t put you under an obligation to not take any creative liberties.

Mini rant over.

It's the same mental hoops many fans go through to explain away this contradiction.

Megaman fans try not to play mental gymnastics challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
