May I have a question.

I try to escape distopia when playing, not import it.

But... Deus Ex, The Last Of Us, the Call Of Duty series before it got (more) stupid, Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey, Fallout, etc.

Playing this game was extremely miserable and yet it's one of my most favorite games.

Drakengard 1

playing this game was a depressing and miserable journey but at the end i loved it.

The Darkness 1, Killer7, The Silver Case, Rule of Rose and Drakengard 1/2

i think i'm forgetting some games

what are your favourite games that have a painfully depressing and oppressive atmosphere? Like, the act of playing it makes you feel kinda miserable but it’s that feeling that gives it its unique beauty.
For me it's the Silent Hill games

Counter-Strike. Because I have to deal with a lot of BULLSHIT teammates but still fun nonetheless.

But jokes aside, and going back to your question, deadbolt. It take place in the underworld and you play as the ripper. The lore and the gameplay makes it interesting. With its dark themes and subject matter characters display deep emotional regret through their past in the human worldm And not to mention its OSTs are such a vibe.

Here, have a listen

Drakengard is not a video game. It is a soul crushing experience that is not for the faint of heart.

Silent Hill , Idk why but there is comfort in feeling miserable and depressed and overall sad

And Silent Hill 1 captures that perfectly for me , hearing the intro music and looking at the game beautiful CGI characters with the tragic fate of Alessia and Lisa just hits hard......it's deeply sad but also deeply comfortable for me

Planet Laika, Code Vein II (especially the hero boss cutscenes 😢), Baroque, Yomawari, Process of Elimination, Death Stranding, The Witch and the Hundred Knight, After Us?

you just perfectly described the 1999 gaming masterpiece "silent hill 1" - no other game has had that effect on me before - i often felt out of breath playing certain parts , its like i could feel pure evil and i was suffocating in its darkness , possibly one of my favourite gaming memories ever.

I spent a huge amount of time in Harumi's mission just sitting inside a cabinet too scared to come out and studied the zombies patterns for so long until I got it down to pat to come out. Even then, the whole operation felt like nails scratching on a blackboard.

I loved every moment.

The most recent one I played that left me feeling this way was Hell Is Us. The atmosphere and soundtrack's so eerie and depressing.
