looks like zsnes is coming back as "super zsnes"

I like the way you say that.

GZDoom is convenient for modding but those features aren't necessary either.
They are, if you play H-DOOM ::sailor-embarrassed

It was also the first emulator I used to play online... Imagine having a match with someone across the world from the comfort of your own home. At 13.

It really was a mind-blowing experience, even if it only served to highlight how much I sucked.

Came to post this today as well. Glad to see the discussion already underway. There are some pretty cool features being built for the new version! From what I understand it’s a Unity app, a lot of processes are running on the GPU side which allows for some cool new options. Looking forward to following this one. ZSNES was one of the first emulators I ever used and is responsible for a lot of my SNES play throughs.

But I will wait to use it until it has more time for major bug fixes. I still use the old school version, as I imagin most everyone else here does as well.
I haven't used zsnes for probably 20 years at least now. I switched to snes9x pretty much as soon as I learned I didn't have to fuck around turning off graphics layers to complete games like Final Fantasy V. I still remember struggling to get through the stupid forest area until I learned you could turn graphics layers off mostly by accidentally hitting the hotkey that disables them.

Literally my first PC emulator, good to know they decided to move forward instead of leaving it in the dust

Oh that layering thing is annoying, it was harsh on a DS linker SNES emulator.

Yeah. It worked well enough at a time when the idea of playing a snes game on a computer was basically magic but I don't really miss it.

Personally I went for Snes9x just for KDL3 and other late SNES games that are hard to emulate.

I hope this one is more accurate

https://www.zsnes.com/#coming

still pretty early in its development, but im glad they're keeping the UI and the snow effects.
zsnes i heard wasn't very accurate, but i always enjoyed the UI. View attachment 178840
also has automatic save states and rewind.
I got to watch one of the programers, ZSKnight, on Zophar1's, THE Zophar's Twitch stream last night. I downloaded the beta last night for Windows and it runs wonderfully!! During the stream Zophar ran it on Mac and a member of chat ran it on a linux distro. Seeing both Win11 and Mac it ran amazingly. There are some glitches like the textures in the Enhanced version of MMX have issues during the Vile fight at the end of The Highway but for a beta this is amazing. Looking forward to what ZSKnight, _Demo_ , and the community help create. I

Cool-
But why? What is is it gonna offer that's not already done by one of the many other excellent SNES emulators we have to choose from today?

How does znes differ from BNES or SNES9x ?

25 years ago, I installed ZSNES on the work PC so I could play Final Fantasy II J2E translated ROM on my overnight shift

Are you saying the guys who helped pioneer emulation aren't retro enough? lol jk
Im not saying that they added some new hd textures that you can turn off in some games and they kinda reminded me of that.

The features seem nice, mostly with the sound but the texture option looks like It just puts a paper-effect over almost everything, so I'll have to pass on this, mostly because I want the raw version of a game when I decide to make a video (If I feel safe with making vids on anything that's on a Nintendo console again) but...

Someone warned me this emulator Is riskware over five things.
  • Suddenly launches out of nowhere.
  • It's using Unity
  • Closed Source
  • Weird Stuff In DLL's (Something about a hidden binary in steamworks dll, they did not elaborate)
  • Also a suddenly made Patreon page
They were vague about some details, but I'll trust them over It. I will wait for a profesional opinion on the 4th thing. For now I'll just stick with SNES9X.

The paper effect is fine on Super Mario World but I agree that it's superfluous like texture filtering.

On the other hand if the Unity version used is the latest there should be no problems.

Closed source is a bit unfortunate but not a dealbreaker (just preventing from any fork from being made).

But what is this launches out of nowhere thing about?

I spent three hours in the ghost ship because of transparency issues in ZSNES. I don't know if I just hadn't learned you can turn off certain layers, or the functionality wasn't there, but I had to learn to move through that map blind in order to complete it. Had a whole team of swole monks when it was over, though ::flexing::flexing::flexing::flexing

I meant as In It just suddenly appeared all over the Internet, I think that's called a shadow launch?

Yeah it was a joke. I also think some of the textures look a little odd. But it's still being worked on so I think things will improve. I have faith in zsKnight.
