Linux Handheld vs Android Handheld

I haven't tried Linux before, so I prefer mobile emulation.
A lot of flagship phones can Run a lot of emulators smoothly without any fps drops. A great way to play your favorite console games to go.

I remember seeing a video on TikTok where he used his phone to play GTA 5. Wasn't the smoothest experience, but playable.

I’ve used them both— I admit things are easier and more accessible on my android handheld but I’ll always prefer and have a soft spot for one running Linux. As far as Linux goes I really enjoyed batocera, and may switch back over to that ecosystem

I prefer Android handhelds. Not every Android emulator is as mature as I would like it, but there is less fucking around when it comes with file transfer, and the Android sleep function just feels a lot less janky than the Linux equivalent - all in all it just feels like a more elegant user experience.

Android is just an easier user experience and has basically everything you need. My one gripe is that linux gets the latest and greatest PCSX2 emulator and android does not. And I love ps2. Both aether and nether still have some wonky issues with certain games

Most of the portable handhelds from the likes of Anbernic are Linux based. I honestly prefer it. They are a pain to setup, but once you do it's great. There's a lot more customization. Retropie is also Linux based. I honestly only use Linux for emulation. I have a Picade (counter top arcade cab with Retropie), a Steam Deck, and an Anbernic 40XXV. All work great.

Linux is just a lot more efficient across the board for pretty much any use. Moreso for portables, since power consumption and efficiency is a factor. That said, Android is still Linux, so, yeah.

And I think unless something changed android users won’t be able to use PS2 with retroachievements in regular mode in about a week or so

linux is a meme
I wish Linux was real

I like to hug and kiss on GNU/linux and tickle its feet with my feet under the covers
Honestly Linux is amazing not just as an idea, but in practice. I wish I had a spare machine to use it on. I had a stint on it when a friend migrated and I helped him set up, learning as I went.

Sadly he went back to Windows because of junk like Valorant.

Understandable lol. Not valorant specifically, but having to check a website for compatibility and workarounds for any possible game you might play is such a nuisance.

I really enjoyed Linux for productivity though. I love using the terminal. Wouldn’t mind trying a dual boot setup next time

Handheld... I have a modded 3DS, lol.
But from experience, I'd say go with Linux-based.
Moreso, Steam OS is lovely.

I use a smartphone with a custom ROM as a handheld and it's basically Linux.

True, but in fairness a lot of the time Windows needs workarounds too, haha.

I think it is but I didnt test other distros. I got F-Droid for the store and downloaded Retroarch right after that. Then Aurora store for the few non-FOSS APKs I have to use.
Sounds like the way to do it.
You ever mess with the G-Apps sandbox thing?

Nope. I have only apps from those two "stores" and just use the temporary permission system. I have another phone that I repaired the screen and use without SIM. You want to sandbox apps? I'm still searching for a solution for and Android VM to run on PC/Linux but I dont know where to start.

Back to the topic. Win98 hardware accelerated 3D gaming on Android guys... With Retroarch/DOSBox-Pure...

easy. get a steam deck

If we're talking dedicated emulation handhelds made in china, if you want a easy and fast one to setup imo and start using then get a Linux based one. Usually a lot of different os's you can use if your handheld is popular. The android based ones can be a pain to set up but are usually the more powerful ones in emulation. They're going to be usually bigger too, like a retroid pocket.

So it really depends on what you're looking for in it. I personally prefer Linux based ones since I'm just gonna be using low powered emulation anyway and they're usually more pocketable.
