Licensed for Greatness

With this video recently reaching Jotaro's age reminded me of how I've never posted about how good JoJo HFTF is as a licensed game.
It is kind of a running gag among my friends that I really hate licensed games (and I honestly think for good reason) but JoJo HFTF is just on another level for me when it comes to the amount of passion the team at Capcom put into everything.

What I think blows me away always, apart from how well the sprite art and music has aged and all the endless references or the super story mode in PSX that is literally just the plot of Part 3 fully put into a game, is how creatively they adapted the gameplay of each character. Recently I bought JoJo: All Star Battle R and while it has nice fanservice, all the characters just kind of mesh together and feel very samey, the way a lot of stuff is animated also feels very lackluster.
Meanwhile HFTF has archetypes that I think feel unique to this day and it possibly invented the puppet character archetype in games with Devo (you can fact check this though not 100% sure just based on my knowledge)

What licensed games are your favorites or you think even one up it?

When it comes to licanced games idk if it counts but i really love Marvel Vs Capcom (Marvel is the licanced part with spiderman and all)
Yeah I'm pretty sure its considered a licensed game series. I only recently played MvC 2 only (not 1 or 3 yet) because I've heard a lot about it and yes its an extremely fun game.
It didn't quite have this precision and appeal other fighting games of that era have for me to play them more seriously, but as an actual game you play casually its really fun and has great fanservice. The soundtrack on some of the stages was god tier and really beautiful sprite art.

Wish I was a bit more into Marvel to get all of those references.

It’s not a Sailor Moon RPG, a SNES SHMUP with a rep that precedes what it’s based off of, a SpongeBob game with rock/metal music, a FotNS Yakuza game, Blazing Lasers, or a gallery shooter with BRS, so no it’s not. Still heat.

The early to mid 2000s were basically the golden age for licensed games lol. The Simpsons Hit and Run also came out around the same time

Out of all of those its mainly the FotNS Yakuza one that sounded fire, the rest sounded kinda eh to me.

Idk If I’d say it’s the best licensed game ever made, but I will say it’s the best JoJo game ever made.

I think its a great game but best of all time? imo Star Wars Battlefront 2 [2005] or Fighting Mania: Fist of the North Star

One of the best and in my top 10 at least.

Shredder's Revenge pretty much eclipses that now.

  • Arkham City
  • Capcom Punisher & AVP. Any licensed Marvel arcade game they did.
  • D&D Capcom games
  • Batman: Brave and the Bold
  • Ghostrider
  • Wolverine: Uncaged Edition
  • Transformers Devastation

For me the best are Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 and DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 2. Maybe NUNS 4 as the best. They're not very deep games, but polished and fan-servicey.

But I haven't play any JoJo or Shedder's Revenge.

I'm kinda off licensed games at the moment. The licenses I'm interested in are old by now and got worse in my opinion. And I'm burnt on licensed superheroes for the most part. So it's what it is.

Look it's newer, ok? And it's not a classic, and there have been a million licensed games.
We all know the greats like Home Improvement: Power Tool Pursuit! But I remembered an
INCREDIBLE licensed game I played recently that NO ON EVER talks about: Mad Max

Never heard of this actually. I'll need to look into it, I do enjoy the movies quite a bit as well as Hokuto no Ken, which while we are on this topic also had a great licensed game by ArcSys.

I wish Capcom was in charge again when it comes to adapting Jojo into video games.

I cannot qualify any game to be the "best" because of the multiple genres...
