Why should I care about a deluxe remaster that had so much to add/change in relation to the original, but refused to do so?

Found it really disappointing and underwhelming. The changes felt like Bluepoint thought they were "fixing" the game's aesthetics while actively making them worse. All of the atmosphere has been sucked out of the world without anything meaningful added.

I might have said it was worth a playthrough if they added the Northern Limit zone, which was cut from the original, but nope. Just bad cosmetic upgrades and little else.

Wish they added the extra world. Bluepoint remakes could have been really awesome if they add stuff like the additional colossi in SotC. A missed opportunity imo

Demon's Souls (2020) is just OG Demon's Souls but prettier. Bluepoint keep all the jank the make the original miserable experience to play, while also overhauling/redesign that stray further from the original artstyle.

BonfireVN makes a lot of comparison video of OG and Remake, and most of the redesign turn everything into grotesque monster (like the Fat Official, and The Adjudicator for example).

If anything, it should be the reverse, keep all the artstyle the same and pretend you're trying to trace someone's work, while overhauling the gameplay, the fans would be more satisfied that way.

Given that the original ran pretty poorly and was stuck on PS3, yeah I think the remaster was as 'necessary' as any other port/remaster. I've never really cared about the 'art design' of the souls series which is pretty unoriginal grimdark fantasy most of the time. I also don't care about souls game lore though. I'm in it for the gameplay and the gameplay alone. So having the game run smoother on modern hardware with a higher resolution is an easy win for me.

The original runs at a stable 720p 30fps like 90% of the time, may not be up to modern standards but it's far from running poorly. Played through the game for the first time a few months ago, so it's not like I'm misremembering or anything. The remake existing means we'll probably never get a proper remaster, though I'd welcome a rereleased that ups the original to 1080p 60fps.

I wish they would at least improve the fight with Dragon God... and nothing happened 😒

Remakes/remasters are very often downgrades or just straight up a different game larping as the original, for a variety of reasons. Some of them have even been of games so recent they should have just ported the original. Not much we can do about it except enjoy the occasional gem like the atelier mary remake.

It was the only way to buy two spells that use the same rare material without having to wait for another run.
That's wild. Demon's Souls is made for repeat runs.

I always get a little miffed when people complain about how easy Demon's Souls is without doing New Game+. New Game+1 & 2 were the hardest things I've done in the series. Granted, I was doing challenge runs (only leveled intelligence and didn't change my armor from the default), but I've done challenge runs and platinum'd the other games and they didn't beat the hot holy heck out of me like this one did.

Completely unnecessary
It's same game but with MUCH worse art direction
most enemies became diablo demon, many also become more fat and ugly, not to mention whole orange and teal lighting in every single area with is extremely obnoxious
Even architecture completely different, everything now is a late medieval gothic castle with make no sense in context of demon souls

Lazy and disrespectful cash grab, perfect for modern sony

They should just make DS2, but of course that would require making a new game with is too much effort.

I think the ease of play lies in absence of a limit on number of spells cast (if you farm enough mana items, you'll be able to recharge them for quite a while).

While it's really good, it took way too many artistic liberties like almost every remaster/remake seems to do nowadays. SotC on PS4 was the same way. The PS4 version isn't nearly as atmospheric and Wander looked worse. Bluepoint was a talented but also overrated studio.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see so much criticism of the remake here, but I guess I should have expected that from a gaming forum. You guys know your stuff.

I've been defending the original over the remake for so long now, and the analogy I've come to like is that Demon's Souls 2020 is like Papillon 2017 - taking almost every bone from the original body, but with a style and acting that was notably worse across the board.

DeS gets defended because "well not everyone has a PS3", but not everyone has a PS5 either. It's not so much worse than the original that a person shouldn't play DeS at all, but it makes no meaningful improvement beyond being 60 FPS, which honestly means nothing in as PvE a game as this.

All that being said, I never really expected the remake to add any of the missing content. FROM themselves didn't bother improving anything other than the visuals, FPS, and one bonfire with Dark Souls Remastered, why would Bluepoint be any different?

I prefer the art direction the PS3 version of DS had, but I appreciate the remaster having a different look. That way we have two different ways of enjoying a great game, instead of just one.

Ys the Oath in Felghana?
That's a completely different game from Wanderers from Ys, though. The story is more or less the same, but the way you engage with the game is completely different.

Like Shadow of the Colossus for PS3?
That's what this version was? If it was good then yes.

they also removed the item duplication glitch
I cannot blame a remake for fixing glitches since this could be seen as an exploit.

If only this didn't mean that you can only have easy access to one and not the other... Imagine if The Twin Snakes was the only viable way to play the first MGS on modern consoles or Mario 64 DS was the one over its N64 iteration being playable on all Nintendo consoles since the Wii...

That's still a remake as an ARPG with platforming.
