The Gamecube. for the standard at the time (which in its defense was sky high) was some major butt barf. While I would happily buy it just for Luigi's Mansion, I could say the same for a lot of PS2 games. As an avid Sunshine hater who's never seen much more than Dragonroost Island in Wind Waker. I think after some years, and the nostalgia needle moves up to the Wii era. People with a soft spot for the Gamecube will be lumped in with bizzare weirdos like myself who have a soft spot for the Dreamcast. Oh yeahhh, a terrible fate indeed >:)
The industry was on fucking fire, and Nintendo hardly contributed to that. Credit where it's due though, the Wii sold 100 million skinny gamecube's and was awesome. More than made up for 2 meh generations. Not bad, just not great, in an era where everyone was doing great. If you look at the entirely library as a whole. I think you can see they weren't really sure how to match the stunning success of Sony, and then the surprisingly big splash Microsoft made with the Xbox. But they made it work in a major way with the Wii, adopting this "get more out of less" idea that's still keeping them in a strong position today. The Switch had its hiccups but was all and all pretty great. The Gamecube is like a Switch you can't undock. It's a blank slate of a console with no ace up its sleeve.
Lets end positive though. Without a Gamecube in the house as a kid, I would have never been able to play Sonic Adventure 1 or 2. No Ribbitking, no Shadow, no Toadstool Tour. As mentioned earlier, Luigi's Mansion. I do feel pretty bad digging up this old console beef from 25 years ago. At least there was competition at all, which is good for everyone. There isn't anyone trying really hard to gain your trust these days, like consoles now just accept there core audience, too stubborn to buy a PC.
