Now, where did I leave my thigh-highs?

Well, I need to get some work done, so figured that not being able to play some of my favorite crap would help me focus on productivity.

I quite like Linux, really. This isn't my first time using it.

i want to but dont know much about it ill learn quickly like ive done with everything in my computing life. maybe something for me to do in the autumn when my brain returns.

Hell yeah, welcome to 'God this is so annoying at times WHY CAN'T I JUST DO THIS SIMPLE THING EASILY but at least my OS isn't fuckin spying on me and full of adverts anymore so I'll just deal with those annoyances'

About that, I'm switching again to Mint right now. :loldog

Debian never really works how I want it to, and I'm more familiar with Mint anyway.

For new people to Linux or veterans I generally just recommend Fedora especially if you have newer hardware and want to have a higher chance of everything working right. I did just recently try giving KDE a second chance but had to switch back to GNOME after 2 weeks. I think I lasted on Debian for a day or two because their version of Steam wasn't annoying to get working.

Nice. I use Linux since Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger, year 2005.

Mint was my preferred distro for years, now I'm hooked with CachyOS, relearning some terminal commands.

Linux, and open source software are amazing.

I started with Ubuntu 3 years ago, had a lot of issues, stopped using it after 2 days, then in 2024 I tried again, didn't work again but finally this year I switched to Fedora and that shit finally worked for me, both on PC and laptop.

Nice!
Have used Mint and Pop!Os for a while, and they are great! I actually miss Pop!OS, would use it at work if i could. Really wanted to have time to mess around with Arch linux, looks like a lot of fun, but that will have to wait.

it's me trying to have numlock enabled at login screen.
40 minutes to make it work.

For a stable OS in general, can't go wrong with anything that uses Debian as a base. SteamOS is also a good base if it keeps getting improvements. I don't know how well it fares on a normal rig but It works well enough on the steam deck and probably anything ARM based.
If you want something esoteric but reliable nixOS is surprisingly decent, though the issue is that it works by it's own rules and not everything is immediately compatible. Though you can always install a nix shell with a arch base and use the shell for that. I still don't know what I'm doing but it's fun to mess around with XD

If you ever want to balk at the number of distros there are, DistroWatch can help. But uh, if you also want to look at alternatives to what you're using or want to find something to try, DistroWatch can help.

I've been using Linux for several years, but not as many as a daily driver. I'd just dabble in it, put it on a secondary machine, and that's what I'd really recommend anyone do. Get it installed, figure out how things work, figure out how to install programs, and so on.

A few years ago, I had Windows 7 on my tower, and I had the idea of making space so I could dual-boot Linux, start to use it there, maybe try it for gaming. This was before the W7 End of Life, but it was fast approaching, and I had zero interest in moving onto 8/10. So, I try to make space, and Windows won't let me make a big enough partition even though I clearly have enough space. "Well, fuck you, I do what I want!"
I force-shrunk the partition and broke the Windows install in the process. ::homerscream I figured since EOL was coming fast, I may as well stick with Linux... and I did, for games and all. I'm using a Steam Deck now. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with it. It helps not having interest in the games that won't run due to anti-cheat or where you'll get banned just for it being your OS of choice!

I also currently have Debian with KDE Plasma running on this underpowered e-waste. If you have some old hardware lying around, look into Linux. You might be surprised at the amount of life left in that machine.
