I can't name a single FF protag (in english) who isn't at least a little bit insufferable. Even the ones I like.

The thing is... Squall leans too heavily into the "edgy teenager" trope, I know Squall is more nuanced than that, but still, that trope isn't considered "cool" anymore, in fact, it has aged like milk.. that's why Squall is the most controversial Final fantasy protagonist, some people love him, some people hate him, but pretty much no one is indifferent.

I don't normally hate chatacters, and when I do, it's because they either don't shut up or lock me in a tutorial where I can't progress unless I do what they say.

But I remember hating this guy for days until I got to beating him.

Not even Cecil Harvey? Honorable dude doing a dishonorable thing for honorable reasons, only to find out his honorable reasons aren't actually all that honorable, then goes to a cave on a mountain to fight his honorable self to become less dishonorable?

Jokes aside, he's probably my favorite FF protagonist. Him becoming a paladin blew my mind as a kid.

Squall's edgy teenagerness is mostly due to localization. In Japanese, he's less "I'm too cool to have feelings," and more distant and unwilling to let people get close because he was an orphan. He shrugs at and says "whatever" to everything because he doesn't want to get caught up in it if it's just going to leave anyways, which plays a lot better with him falling for Rinoa and finding something worth suffering for.

Instead, in the English version, he's a dick that suddenly discovers that emotionally caring about someone is pretty neato, as if he'd never felt feelings before that moment. It makes him feel like he has the emotional depth of a seahorse.

I hate her and she annoys me. I'm talking about Princess Farah in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I died several times because of her, because I had to defend myself and her, and if she lost too much health, the game was over. Sometimes she'd shoot arrows at me and make me lose health, and sometimes she'd glitch.

I took apleasure in attacking her with my sword to get revenge.

Not so much for who she is but that the script was protecting her against what should have been the consequences of her attitude.
Especially during

Spoiler: The events where Nowa escapes from her town.

such a big deal was made about how she was sacrificing herself so Nowa's group could escape. I was expecting to recruit a small band of rebels to mount a rescue only to learn Perrielle had been allowed to leave through the front door and she was already recruiting for her own army.

I quit the game around the city with canals because I could not stand the thought of listening to Perrielle berate the local leader into supporting her revolution.
