I Hate You Already

I can't name a single FF protag (in english) who isn't at least a little bit insufferable. Even the ones I like.
The thing is... Squall leans too heavily into the "edgy teenager" trope, I know Squall is more nuanced than that, but still, that trope isn't considered "cool" anymore, in fact, it has aged like milk.. that's why Squall is the most controversial Final fantasy protagonist, some people love him, some people hate him, but pretty much no one is indifferent.

I don't normally hate chatacters, and when I do, it's because they either don't shut up or lock me in a tutorial where I can't progress unless I do what they say.

But I remember hating this guy for days until I got to beating him.

Kratos. I ended dropping the original God of War. Not just because of Kratos being a constant dick, but also I hated all the quick-time events and button mashing.
You'll probably love the norse saga if thats the case

Of course he's a killjoy. All space marines are literally space virgins who are obsessed with religion.
true, the imperium just loves screwing its best people over.

Not even Cecil Harvey? Honorable dude doing a dishonorable thing for honorable reasons, only to find out his honorable reasons aren't actually all that honorable, then goes to a cave on a mountain to fight his honorable self to be less dishonorable? Love that dude. Probably my favorite FF protagonist.

Squall's edgy teenagerness is mostly due to localization. In Japanese, he's less "I'm too cool to have feelings," and more distant and unwilling to let people get close because he was an orphan. He shrugs at and says "whatever" to everything because he doesn't want to get caught up in it if it's just going to leave anyways, which plays a lot better with him falling for Rinoa and finding something worth suffering for. Instead, in the English version, he's a dick that suddenly discovers that emotionally caring about someone is pretty neato, as if he'd never felt feelings before that moment. It makes him feel like he has the emotional depth of a seahorse.
