How much info about yourself are you willing to give?

I avoid it like the plague... People are radically stupid, posting pictures not only of themselves, but their children and even babies.
I also avoid internet shopping, online banking, etc.

It always irked me to see (young) parents posting pic of their kids online...

At least family photos are in private.

You're putting your kids in display, sometimes even forcing them, in the "Race for clout".

I pity the kid that would grow up if their friends find them back online...

I understand feeling proud but privacy and intimacy are important.

Speaking of clout I remember that some youtuber got the hammer for going a bit too far.

At this point i look insane compared to other members i literally have my picture IRL as my discord PFP look it up if you want.

A bit. Not as much now as I used to because people go batshit crazy with stuff like doxxing and stuff nowadays, which is really scary.

I don't mind "revealing" my country because I like to talk about cultural differences so I tend to bring it up. Other than that it depends on how well I know the person. I met my best friend because we both realized we were from the same country, for example.

I'm just a silly monk living in a god-forgotten abbey brewing beer ;P

After things that I don't want to get into, I tend to have my online personae compartmentalized. if I don't like a portion I can just let it go. Maybe some of them might exist when I get fond memories, but things like my C&C modding era are just gone. it makes my attempts to make a name for myself in game making a bit harder, as I have to figureo ut how to wrangle 20+ years of internet content in one direction...

When I first started using the internet as a kid, it was common knowledge not to give out your name or personal info online, and I still mostly follow those rules. The only time I'll ever consider sharing more is with my circle of closer friends online, and even then I don't like oversharing.

I also had a conference about "the dangers of the internet" back in middle school, aren't those done nowadays?

And even then I feel that there are always risks of intimacy breaches (like someone's account getting hacked or if someone decides to leak/dox). I knew someone who's irl "friend" (well, more like a bully pretending to be a friend) who gave personal data like phone number to his buddies just to "do a prank".

Things like this are why I'll never give out anything too personal in an open online setting. Even just a name I feel is a bridge too far.

Exactly, a close friend circle is something but when the friend's friends are knowing things about you it's a problem. This is why I always disliked the whole "show that to your friends and the friends of your friends" on Facebook until they revamped it because two degrees of separation can be too exponential already.

a man in a suit is sitting at a desk with a cup of coffee and the words fbi agent written on the table

My FBI agent when I use a fake account with a fake name with a fake origin with a fake face and a fake like.

Some of my oldest accounts still have my name, because "it's a common name they can't lead back to me?"

I'll show my face, idc. I'll say what city I'm in. No big.

I tell my kid to be more careful than that. I don't want her ass kidnapped.

I did ID verification on VRChat for it to say I'm legally above 18, that sub community is making more moves to push kids away as much as they can by making instances adult only. So Unfortunately that's just kinda where we're at in terms of being able to stay in our own social bubble.

I dated a girl who wanted to be a famous tik toker found out shes a criminal record and its destroyed her tik tok fame. she seems to have calmed herself down a lot since dating me which to be fair id want that for anyone but i think her quest for fame is gonna be hard she should focus on being a better person. Another dude from my country travels the world but hes got a shady past involving messaging underage girls and stealing charity money so he can run all he wants but will have to face it all some day. The internet can make or break people now.

Nowadays, people might only get my shitty gaming takes at best, lol.
You never know who might suddenly turn out to be an asshole.

I used to be more paranoid about having an online presence at some point, but I realized I do like being a little loose on this. As a mortal human being, I live too little to spend my time worrying about it.

There's not much reason for people to come after me if I'm not some sort of public figure or don't attract negative attention. To make an exaggerated analogy, there could be a sniper outside my house waiting to shoot me, however there's no reason for a sniper to be here.

I tell people universe secrets and personal details about my life on the internet just because I can do so in such a way that leaves it without being easily looked up and referenced, or in chat rooms where they don't keep permanent logs of all the activity so I can tell something in passing just to get it off my chest.

If I can help it I disclose nothing. Going under the radar gives me peace of mind.
