How go you like your mecha? fantastical, gritty, or somewhere in between?

I’ve always preferred the gritty type of mecha. I like when giant robots are just another weapon of war like warships and tanks. That’s probably how they’d be used if they existed in real life.

While I do enjoy all sorts of mechas and big robots, I do have a preference towards the more slow, lumbering mechas, the kind like in Front Mission, or the Barga in Earth Defence Force.
There's something just so spine tingling about commanding a slow, heavy, gigantic piece of metal, charging up for a punch and watch just how much damage it does, heh.

I'm quite fond of Wanzers also. Full Metal Panic has super heavy ones called Behemoths, too, quite a sight.

I like mechs in general, but I'm not into the blocky types? Like Xabungle, Dancouga, God Mars, God Sigma, Gold Lightan.

Nostalgic and melancholic tribute to master Gō Nagai, undisputed father of japanese "mecha" animation.
In the super robots vs real robots debate, I'm clearly on the side of the former. ??

Ideologically I really like the "realistic" kinds like Front Mission, MechWarrior/Battletech, etc. but in practice I think I love the ones that try to make the mechs more like giant armoured knights like Vision Of Escaflowne, Five Star Stories, etc.

Also, everyone should check out Argonbolt's "Revenge Of Mecha" series on YouTube where he mods the HIMACs from Gungriffon into Amra 3 and does a little machinema mecha-war series on little skirmishes that happen in his alt-reality earth with them. It's pretty unique.

Thanks for the share! There's a mecha style for everyone to love, I'm sure

I love the biological freaky Evangelion "mechs" the most. And Five Star Stories is up there too. Does anybody remember Rahxephon? Definitely lean toward the abstract, experimental designs.

I do love the classic traditional mechs too - Macross designs will always be awesome.

I loved how Gundam wing was kinda set in this technological transitional period between gritty realistic and super robot, and showed how the different sides on the conflict dealt with the technological advancements. OO also portrayed this very well.

Love 08th MS Team. But honestly I love my mech animes be they dark and gritty or be they funny.
I wish more Gundam was like 08th ms team. Becuse older Gundam is often about some stupid kid that hates war being like forced to pilot a mech and oh no I killed some one buuhuu is rather annying. Yes I know not all the Gundam´s are like that but the ones I seen.

I mean I love Patlabor and my Macross and my Gundam But then it´s nice to Watch full metal panic which is more comedy esk or Tengen Toppa which is pure whack. Then you have the more kid friendly mech Like Gundam builder that I also enjoy.

Honestly I loved almost all mech anime´s I seen the only ones I hated are like few shows. Darling in the FranXX bored me to hell. Eveangelion yes I hate it becuse watching it just had me confused and the End of evangelion and Death and Rebirth just had med so damn lost I taught I was losing my mind.
And Macross F and Macross Delta just pissed me off so much. F had so many unlikable charters and story was boring. But Delta is just pure fracking Idol anime with some mech in it.

Yes yes I know Super dimantional fortress Macross also had Minmei but how much of that anime focus on her sining ? Like 2-3 episodes the main focus was the drama and the war and Mechs.
Macross Delta was pure focus on several idoils and honestly the story was pure ass.

Last good Macross was 7 well Zero was good but just an a 5 part OVA.

Sadly they don´t make Mech animes like they did back in the 70, 80 and 90s. Heck they barly make anything other than gundam and some random mecch anime that´s decent or just meh.

Man I miss classic like Mazinger, Vandred,Space Runaway Ideon,Getter Robo,Armored Trooper Votoms.
''dark and gritty or be they funny'' I totally agree with this.

With tons of robots and weapons, like Gundam or Code Geass. Not Mazinger or Daitarn.
Yeah I don't like supers either. I like some Banpresto originals that court with the power levels of super though, like Granzon.

I dunno, I just kind of know what I like when I like it. Mecha has never been something I've been super attached to or know a lot about, I just enjoy what I enjoy of it.

Grounded but simplistic, something like the classic gundam designs. Chars Zaku II will always be one of my favorites.

I only have one rule when it comes to mecha entertainment of any sort: the robot should talk. I don't want it to just be a piece of equipment or a non-sentient vehicle, I want it to have a fun, interesting personality. If it doesn't talk, it should at least be "alive" – it should have its own intelligence and motivations, and easy-to-understand emotions. Otherwise, I really don't see the difference between a 60-foot mechanical man and a Dodge Viper.

By this token, some of my favourite "mecha" characters include:

See how you can immediately understand all those characters' personalities just by lookin' at them? That's the kind of mecha I like.

There two Mech-games that perfectly matches my kind of mech-designs :
Mechwarrior( aka Battletech) :
amh8g4ltf2bc1.jpeg

Gritty , more like war-machines .
When the mechs are deployed , you know this will be a huge event and unbelievably ALOT of C-bills are getting shot , destroyed and salvaged .

And dont forget the best meme-mech that cant be surpassed ( not even metal gear rex and ray ).

A walking Trash-can with a gun glued to it !

AND Armored Core :

armoredcore6_aufmacher-cfce87e8f48eda22.webp

Gritty but more fantastical without going Gundam-levels of technical Wizardry and over the top designs ( while those look awesome too ) .

I tend to lean more grounded with a dash of Sci-Fi. Things like Armored Core, MechWarrior, Front Mission and such. I do enjoy some Super Robo from time to time too, my favorite Mecha media just tends to lean to the former more often.

Gritty, make em look like they are about to fall apart and are filled with patchwork all around.

In other words, Battletech.
