I think that the MMO Final Fantasy games shouldn't have been numbered in the first place, XI and XIV are almost like spin-offs... Same with DQX.Final Fantasy XIV isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The new player experience is smelly, the server system is clunkier than other MMOs, you can’t move while casting, and, from what my FFXIV-addicted friends have said, the game needs 100 hours before it gets good.
The MMORPG genre has stagnated for decades because of many thinking that a MMO should be like WoW or else it wouldn't work...
The idea of a persistent world and being able to talk to many players as a server can hold is great on paper but the genre is predatory in the sense that it requires a lot of time to grind a single character and that you're forced to subscribe (or for f2p ones you'd be extremely limited in your actions). Furthermore this is also the kind of game you can barely go far outside of a guild so it means you will have to follow a schedule and hope you'd get well with people.
MMOs should've been the ultimate game genre when you think about it yet even online video games have slowly shifted to a game-based system (like multiplayer FPS, Battle Royales, MOBAs and Fighting Games) for over a decade and I cannot blame people for wanting short sessions instead of spending hours in a MMO for the evening.
