Hot takes

Final Fantasy XIV 1.23b (the last one before ARR) was peak FFXIV, and when Yoshida nuke it, it also nuked any chance of we getting anything that is not boiled down MMORPG that tries to be WoW.

Also, MGSV is ass, the only good thing are the memes. But this is not a hot take, it is a reality.

Ohhhhh, I've got a LOOOOOOOT of hot takes, that's for sure.

I'll start off with a pretty tepid one, though:
The FGC (fighting game community) has completely RUINED ALL fighting games.
-I have had a lot of beef with the FGC (and especially the subhumans over at SRK (shoryuuken) for nearly 20 years now. Their idea of "competitive" fighters has utterly ruined fighting games because now all developers and publishers think that all people want are competitive fighters. The last truly FUN fg I've played was Melty Blood Act Cadenza verB (I don't like Current Code, and I especially don't like Type Lumina). Tekken is a tryhard's dream because once you've gotten your opponent in the air, it's game over because juggling until death is the norm in Tekken.

I could probably rant for literal days about how much I despise the FGC with how they've ruined fighting games forever.
Oh I started to hate Tekken after 4, lol. Even when I learned 7, I still didn't like it.
But here's the thing: even the good Tekken games work this way.

I only go for SRK to look up fighting game stuff in order to learn them, honestly.
I never considered myself to be a FGC member, and five minutes on the 3rd Strike Fightcade chat are enough for you to understand why, lol.

Call of Duty's regenerating health and overall gameplay ("running" speed being more slow than how regular humans walk, not even dismemberment like SoF, or even cool guns) were never good, and since DOOM 2016 and DUSK, first person shooters are REALLY evolving now instead of being utter dogshit.

That's not even a hot take to say that regenerative health isn't good game design except for Halo (especially Combat Evolved which had a health bar on top of the armour's energy one) but it was more of a regenerative armour which was 100 times better and fit the in-universe lore whereas you cannot recover from ballistic injuries like that in a contemporary setting). Goldeneye and Perfect Dark having a set pool of life for the entire level but with bulletproof vests to make you able to take a bit more bullets was better in game design and with realism.

On the other hand back in the late 90's the FPS genre would've gotten stale if it weren't for Unreal, Goldeneye, Half-Life and by a smaller extent Halo because of the wave of Doom-likes and Quake-likes that didn't bring anything new to the table.

In fact I wish the Goldeneye-like genre was the staple for console FPS over the Military Shooting genre since that Medal of Honour, Call of Duty and Battlefield overtook the genre...

Whoever though only two guns was good for the sake of "Realism" also needs a swift slap with a wet leather glove
I still think that two weapons in Halo actually made sense in a game design way: having the dilemma to keep your current weapon or change it for the situation to adapt to it.

On the other hand it was made with console FPS in mind (despite that Perfect Dark, Bioshock and other games had the "Weapon Wheel" to compensate for it) so they thought that players could only handle two when you could easily bind all 4 weapons to the D-pad on the Xbox or PS...

Game design and realism can be overarching but I wish they could make something that makes sense in-universe than trying to fit ours.

PS: I absolutely hate the term "videogamey" for anything that is remotely... well, like a video game.

Retro Gaming is good, except when 70% of them have unfair difficulty or one or another has an unnecessarily difficult stage, in this I admit that "modern" games (except the ones that are difficult on purpose like Dark Souls) are better.

NES and Sega Genesis both have giant libraries of games that will break you. lol

Agree, we don't call nonsensical stuff "Cartoony"

...Wait a minute...

Suspension of disbelief isn't a thing?

I love some of them but in the same time I wanna experience the vanilla game once.

All carbonated drinks are overrated and all fizzy drinks taste better newly flat.

anti-cheats are ruining online gaming more than actual cheating

we need more games without any anticheat that just handles it the old fashioned way of banning anyone that's ruining the vibe

The issue is that while banning cheaters is understandable big online games are also trying to ban anyone they may think they'd say something harmful (because of the faulty algorithm/voice recognition program).

Also some tricks are not cheating per se so what could define something "ruining the vibe" if they're just being good?

I don't like the art style of Final Fantasy past VII, with the software upgrades they should've stick with making the games look like Amano's art as much as possible, anything past VII is not aesthetically cohesive to me at all

FFIX was more classic but I kinda agree that VIII and X onwards made it more realistic instead of keeping the "fantasy" part of the series.

While I find it very interesting I think that the Half-Life² we got in 2004 is much better than the fabled "Dark and Gritty" beta

I'm guessing you just mean Nomura's art in general.
