I'm so tired of seeing video essays with "masterpiece" here and "masterpiece" there from people talking about games. It has to be the most overused word in recent memory. Like, sure, no harm done in talking about the games you like the most, but I think "masterpiece" is a bit too strong of a word to just be throwing around. No one will ever have the universally same opinion on a game, ever, and that's okay.

That's why the only really good video essayist I like is Jacob Geller. That guy's videos are otherworldly, and I highly recommend watching them.

Final Fantasy 8 is better than Final Fantasy 9 , 9 felt like a downgrade after 8 presented you the party in full motion in the screen no longer do you just walk alone nope party members followed you in 8 which was far far better than anything that came before it or 9.

FF8 junction system is said to be broken and like yeah it is and you know it is yet you are abusing it to be OP then complain the game is broken? Not like you can just not spend 10 hours getting 99 of every spell then calling the battles tedious cuz draw magic exists.

+nobody shoved a gun in your head and told you to max out on every spell i played without the knowledge of higher number of spell = better result yet i beaten 3 discs just like that I'm i too good? Possible or is it just that the game is easy? Also possible , the game is very fine to beat without maxing out on spell count thus it can still remain well balanced save for few monsters.

The game tackled the weak summons issue like shiva/ifrit becoming useless late game by giving each summon a level system and further improved upon summons by reusing the FF6 system that had each esper grant a stat bonus and spells to learn FF8 uses this system but upgraded.

The junction/GF system allowed for far more customizable playstyle way more than 9 which had more linear path similar to 4.

The story seems to get a lot of flak but for what? Cuz it's teenage romance? Oh wait FF9 has that..... Or nitpick one scene and deem the entire story trash cuz of it?

Also 9 lacks the cinematic gameplay 7/8 had in 7 there was all these very cool moments like running across the cannon as tifa and engaging in a slapping contest with that one woman , stopping a full speed train , and that one fight against the massive mech that attacks midgard , 9 places a heavier focus on cutscenes which is pretty fine it has some of the best cutscenes i seen in Final Fantasy game so far but there is no cinematic gameplay , 8 has the train section and the battle with galbadia garden and the whole space section no matter how nonsensical it may be catching rinoa in space and figuring the alien monster puzzle , also the fight with Adel and ultimecia fight was one hell of a fight , ultimecia was WAY more difficult than kuja i died not to kuja but to necro in 8 i lost twice to ultimecia ALSO ultimecia castle is full of puzzles and challenges that test how good you are with the game by restricting magic/GFS etc sure i understand it's lengthy and at disc 4 you are just done with the game and would hate to prolong it still i found it to be the best and most entertaining final zone that sets up the antagonist pretty well.

Problem with FF8 is it came after 7 which was groundbreaking expectations were high but it seems FF8 didn't live up to those.... Also the limit break is far better in 8 than the trance mechanic in 9 which is unreliable and random at best.

Both are decent games but i found 8 to solve some issues that 9 didn't the SEED system was a fun way to get money , and the card game of 9 was pretty mid compared to 8 , visually both are compareable but 8 takes the lead in animation department , it features pretty amazing animations while 9 doesn't offer a lot of animation variety like 8.

8 also narrates the story with 2 protagonists the main (squall) and the side (Laguna) being the first game to ever do that in the series.

So yup FF8 isn't as bad it's problems seem to stem from gamers optimizing fun out of the game wanting numbers to rise up then complain "MUH ITS BROKEN" no bro you just got rid of all the fun cuz you hyper fixated on numbers.

AND FF8 nerfed melee damage allowing spells/summons to play bigger role you won't get by in 8 just spamming attack like previous games.
Final Fantasy 9 is the most overrated final fantasy game.

Final Fantasy 8, single handedly made me a fan of RPGs', not 7, though I loved aspects of 7 and I played that and a few other RPG's before hand, I much prefer the advent children additions and onwards, the 7 remakes are what the OG should have been and I'm glad it got remade because of all final fantasies, that needed a remake the most, as it aged like milk outside of the music and designs.

9 gets heaps of praise for some reason thought itr's objectivel worse than 8 in every way.

It has a simpler story and is more straightforward than 7 and 8. I also didn't notice that it was loved by anyone till I saw people mention it online. I am willing to bet it was their first final fantasy.

A common reddit post is "when does FF9 get good?", "How much longer do I have to play through 9 before it gets good?", I tried playing through it three times throughout the years and I stopped playing each time.

I say that as someone that finished, 7,8,10,13,13-2,lighting returns and all the kingdom hearts games, and all dragon quests except 9. I''m quite seasoned at RPG's in general and I thought FF9 had bad character designs, crap level layouts, really drawn out combat and also Nobuo Uematsu's worst soundtrack, add to this that it's written exclusively by Sakaguichi, whom isn't a great writer and the better written final fantasy stories are written by someone else, anyone else really. Blue dragon had great music, character designs, good music and a absolute ass story, written by Sakaguichi.

On the topic, I feel like a lot of them don't do a lot of research beyond reading a couple wikis and reddits threads. They either push misinformation like the Saturn being designed for only 2d in mind initially or they pretty much rewrite a wiki without introducing any original/interesting ideas. I watched a three hour video on EoE just for the thesis to be easily provably wrong. Like glancing through a simple wiki page provably wrong. I know it's mostly meant to be background noise but it's extremely lazy. ::cirnoshrug

The N64/PS1 3D games look terrible when upscaled.
Why can't people understand that not everything needs to be upscaled and that old games don't look "old" because they had worse technology, but it's because that was the style they were going for. Like, they look arguably waaaaay better than modern games, not because of "realism" but it's because of artistic identity. Every game back in the day had its own art and style, and when you see a picture of it, you can confidently say it's x game. Now try that with modern games and good luck even telling the difference.

The PS1, "golden era" of Square Soft never resonated with me. I love their SNES and PS2 offerings, and I really enjoy other PS1 RPGS from other developers, but that late 90's run they had does nothing for me.

- Nintendo gets away with exploiting its fanbase because their fanbase lets them. Plus Nintendo fans are the worst.
- 1 to 1 remakes based on games from the PS2 era and later are worse in every way and completely unnecessary (Demon's Souls cough cough). Just make them as reimaginings or a cheap remaster.
- Game Freak is one of the worst RPG developers because Pokemon is hard carried by its winning formula of catching, raising, and training Pokemon. The in-game mechanics are very questionable for an RPG.
- SMT IV Apocalypse sucks and is just a "neutral good" wank.
- N64 was the worst of its generation. Same for the Gamecube.
- Mega Man X series is the worst Mega Man series.
- The main thing killing Team Fortress 2 is its own community.

Julgamento perdido: Akihiro Ehara é um excelente antagonista.
The King Of Fighters: Eu odeio o time Psycho Soldier.
Devil survivor 2 It's one of Atlus' worst RPG games

First off, based Rival Schools enjoyer.

Second, I agree with not caring about the protag's names in an RPG. To me the SMT 1 protag is named Adam and not the Hero or Kazuya.

Third, not liking Black/White 1's story is understandable. It's the best pokemon story by far but that isn't saying a lot. For an RPG it is really bare bones and lacking.

I have to wonder if the term drives clicks. People will click to see why the game is a masterpiece as opposed to "my review of so and so" that you may not care about wasting time on.

I think very few games can be called masterpieces. And even when they are that doesn't guarantee that you are going to like them just because they've been deemed as such. It's like Citizen Kane. It's a landmark in filmmaking. Which is why it's often referred to as a masterpiece. But most people probably won't enjoy sitting through it. I've heard some people say they hate the ending to Easy Rider and that it ruined the film. Yet it's a really iconic movie.

Getting back to games, there's people that don't think OoT is all that special. Shocking. ::omgdoom

For me there are few games that are personal masterpieces. Even games I really love might have flaws or other issues that bar me from thinking they are true masterpieces. One that comes to mind though is the Minerva's Den DLC for BioShock 2. It was just amazing storytelling that really hit you right in the kokoro. And I don't like FPS much. So it takes a lot to really get me to enjoy one.

This is me honestly. There's very few games that I would truly consider "masterpieces" - Sleeping Dogs, Disco Elysium, Hollow Knight; but for me some of the personal masterpieces would be Fable II, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Jet Set Radio Future, Xuan-Yuan Sword VII, Viva Pinata and TES IV: Oblivion.

Git gud.
