Hidden gems and then I'm reading stuff like Sonic Advance and Mother 3. Guys, you ok.
Tbh even stuff like Golden Sun duology. I can understand (maybe) Drill Dozer, Magical Vacation, the Klonoa games, Tomato Adventure (Alphadream's prior work before M&L) but others uuh...ok but thanks to this thread I discovered there is a Zone of the Enders for GBA.

...don't tell me you would consider Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure a hidden gem.

Digimon Battle Spirit 2 and to a lesser extent the original Battle Spirit.

Battle Spirit 2 feels a lot more fair. Chasing calumon to digivolve can feel random.

Both games are wonderswan ports but still feel great and have superb sprite work

Completely overshadowed by its much better PS2 remake, but man Super Robot Wars Original Generation 2 is very peak (also the fact that its available officially in english with a relatively competent translation, unlike Moon Dwellers)

Side Scrolling Action game inspired by games like Odin Sphere, and Princess Crown.

Victory Heat Rally:

Beautiful 2d car racer where you race to unlock different characters. God this looks fun!

1763936894680.png

God Wars:

Story Rich Turn Based Strategy RPG based off of Japanese Folklore.

1763937012323.png

Star Renegades:

Tactical turn based Roguelike with puzzle-like combat. It's not for me, but maybe for you.

Bot Gaiden:

Very under the radar, short, side scrolling platformer that I'm told combines the best of Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man.

1763937282842.png

Megaton Musashi WWired:

Mecha game that the yter had never heard of until a viewer recommended to them. It's apparantly got a really interesting story that sounds similar to the movie The Matrix.

Ghost Blade HD

Kickmaster for the NES.

Found it just by browsing not knowing anything about it and finished it in a single sitting. Unexpectedly good.

So, i thought it would be interesting to have a topic here about our unexpected discoveries! I'm personally interested on weird retro games that tried to do something diferent, even though they heavily failed (just as the recently translated Ancient Roman, for example). With all the efforts of the preservation, emulation and translation community, we keep growing this horizon of inventive, experimental.... funny.... ugly??? and "i've never heard of this shit before" games!

Then i'd like to ask you guys to share recent experiences like this, of "ok i'll just check this weird unkown thing" that just "wooooow!!!" you somehow. The same for upcoming ones, that happens to inspire you to scream to the world "hey everybody you NEED to check this out cuz i feel like i have nobody to talk about it". :D
Honestly i played only the original. But this hack has me intrigued and i think it hasn't been added to the repo. Also recently I've been playing Vagrant Story, currently i'm on where i left last year, in the abandoned city.

I love the original, it's one of the most fun games on the SNES, and it really nails its dark atmosphere. It also has these cool, impressive looking cutscenes.

Honestly i want to see that hack put into the site someday, it's really good, it turns it into a beat em up with the many changes the creator put into it:

I-Ninja.jpg

I-Ninja for all 3 consoles: Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox,
made by Argonut the devs of the original Star Fox on the SNES. Very fun action platformer,
played this with Dolphin not too long ago surprised how good and fun it is.

I believe they've already been mentioned, but Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without A Pulse and Voodoo Vince are pretty great and obscure Xbox games.

The former is hilarious (the dancing segment is fucking gold), had an amazing soundtrack and is the only other game I know of to use the Halo: CE engine. It also had the best response to SJW/Moral Crusader political correctness ever- after Joe Lieberman went on a rant about how the game was promoting cannibalism to children, Wideload had this posted on their site in response:

Setting the Record Straight

The current kerfuffle in the US media about Stubbs the Zombie can be summed up in one word: semantics.

Stubbs, they say, is a cannibal.

This is nonsense, as anyone with a working knowledge of cannibals can tell you. Stubbs fails all the classic litmus tests for cannibalism. He does not wear a bone through his nose. He does not help FBI agents track down serial killers. He has not written a cookbook. He is not named Jeffrey Dahmer. The list goes on and on.

Stubbs is a zombie. Thus the title "Stubbs the Zombie." Zombies eat brains. That's what they do. Stubbs cannot just saunter into the cafeteria and order a plate of Freedom Fries. He has to fight for his meals. In fact, actual cannibals only make it harder for Stubbs to eat, which is why this "cannibalism" story is insulting as well as injurious.

It's no surprise that the all-human media cartel resorts to distortions and name-calling; their anti-zombie bias has been evident for decades, and Stubbs is just the newest target.

If you're a thinking adult, you're probably ready to hear the other side of the story. You'll find it in Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse, in stores now for Xbox, PC and Macintosh. Don't let the humanity-centric media tell you what to think about zombies. A free mind is a tasty mind.

The latter is a well-made, challenging platformer with an imaginative setting that I love, and have a personal relation to! You see, I had an Uncle who worked as an artist of some sort for BEEP Games, and he managed to put in an Easter Egg referencing himself in the game. There is a shop in the Square part of the French quarter where you must buy a horn to complete a task for an undead jazz player- it's called J. Baron Pawn Shop or something. That'd be my uncle's handiwork.
