So I was asked to help a thread on Steam on how I got Hexplore working without it crashing and figured I would share it hear as well for anyone that has be struggling to get it to work without downloading hacked .exe files!
Unfortunately this game (Gog or Steam) doesn't receive updates to get the 3d wrapper it uses to work properly as Windows changes or updates. So it might crash after the intro.
And I am not a fan of hacking the exe if not absolutely need as it could lead to other issues. A 3d wrapper can many times fix the rendering without having to rely on hacking the exe.
And this works on many many older games that have rendering issues!

Best solution is really is dgVoodoo. It's super easy once you have experience with it for any windows version.
Just download the latest version of dgVoooo
https://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/
  • All you need to do is put the dgvoodoo .exe & .conf into the game's root folder.
  • Then copy the .dlls from the "MS" folder to the games root folder (Just choose the x86 or x64 according to your Windows version)
  • Run the dgvoodoo .exe and under DirectX tab set your preference.

The best option for me Windows 11 x64 was:
  • General tab
    • Appearance = Windowed Stretched
  • Direct X tab
    • Videocard = GeForce FX 5700 Ultra
    • Resolution = Desktop
    • Uncheck watermark checkbox
  • Leave all other settings alone
Enjoy!!

dgVoodoo can unexpectedly fix a lot of stuff. I include it in some of the PC games I've posted (Eternal Daughter, Arcturus, and Words Worth to name a few) I've actually never heard of Hexplore. What kind of game is it?

It's a point n click RPG.

Neat, I've not played many computer rpgs but I've become interested in them in recent years. I went and collected all the classic D&D Forgotten Realms games. Along with classics like Dungeon Master and Lands of Lore. I just wish I had more time to dig into them. Those games usually take weeks to months to fully complete if you just play them a few hours a day

Oh man I was obsseed with Dungeon Master 2!!! First played it on the Sega CD, then DOS.
DOS is greatly superior so I am trying to beat it now on that!
Play 1 & 2 then try Nexus on Saturn! It's translated!

Did you see the Amiga dungeon crawler game I posted a few months ago? Called The Shadows of Sergoth. It's a bit simple but it's a very interesting newer game for the system and has some nice graphics. I even included a fan created expansion DLC for it. I need to add more Amiga games again, but it's a hard to decide on what to post from it.

Lol thanks. The Amiga is an amazing system for retro style content. It has a very active community with people making new commercial and freeware games for it all the time. You should look into the AmigaVision project if you have a decent amount of hard drive space you can spare. It's an easy to run and play collection of like almost 4000 curated Amiga games. It doesn't have a lot of the newer commercial games but it has just about every notable classic title. It actually had a major update back in April and I probably need to update my copy.

@RageBurner Yo! Can we (by we I mean Alma) add Hexplore to the repo with the fixes applied? Since both the versions of it you can buy are sorta broken. We can do it with the CDR sync disabled. It's an older game from 1998 anyways. I'd kinda like to try it myself actually. I looked at a bunch of screenshots from Mobygame for it and it looks interesting.
