Does anyone relate with Persona 2: Eternal Punishment's cast more than with any other game in the Persona series?

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is my favorite game in the series because it’s the only one that I really connected with on a personal level; not even Persona 3 and its themes resonated with me that much (it must be because I played Final Fantasy IX first, and it has similar themes about life and death, and I connected and resonated more personally with Vivi in FFIX than with any character in Persona 3).

I still like the other casts (Except for Persona 4 and 5, I don't like those games and their characters), but Eternal Punishment's group is honestly my personal favorite. They're very unique and well-written. If they released another game with a similar cast (it doesn't even have to be a Persona game) I'd probably be more excited for that than for another high school setting. Catherine's cast was close, but it's not an RPG so the character interactions are very different.

Does anyone else relate to any of this? Personally I feel like all of them are relatable in some way. As a kid, you look forward to becoming an adult, but then you're there and you don't feel any different. Except now you've got new problems that you never had to deal with before.

Sorry if this post is a little silly or something, Idk I'm just a stupid idiot. (╥ ω ╥)

yeah same, i havent played 2 but from the one i have (3 & 4) ive never gotten attached to any of the cast members, either felt too troupy or just found them too simple or comedic.

this screenshot tho? aaaah i feel it and probably has to do with the stage in life im at, feels to at home hahaha.

that said i do wonder if i had played the other ones way back then when i was around the age of those highschooler characters, if i would feel any different.

I should get around to P2, I like how the characters are actually aged up compared to every game of today needing 10 billion teenagers to rebel against fate when that message is meaningless in today's world.

I also like the themes of
eldritch mythology
inside the game from what i've seen so far.

Replaying Persona 2: Eternal Punishment back in 2023 (when I was 20 years old and just starting college) was truly an incredible experience, and I won’t lie, I actually cried reading those dialogues I just posted. This interaction between Tatsuya and Baofu especially made me cry so much when I replayed the game.

Hey Vivi! ::chocobo-wave

Eternal Punishment was my first (and for now only) entry in the series. I still remember buying the disc, fearing it was a horror game, due the creepy evil smile the Shadow Maya greets you at the cover. But the overall quality of the game surprised me. It was the first time I was playing an RPG in the modern times, with schools, drugstores, police stations, etc. The overall aura the game gives, with a more mature, sinister tone was also very memorable, with things always having this sober aesthetic, immersing you in a world closer to reality. Using rumors to change things around you, like making a boutique shop sell weapons, was such a novelty as well... The themes like those in the screenshots always stuck with me, like Ulala sometimes lamenting she wasn't so young anymore, and dealing with your own fragility, to the point the Joker overtakes key characters, and you need to free them from it's curse. The OST... Really superb ::neku-jam

I've spend a great deal of my time doing the two routes + the extra dungeon. I'm yet to play Innocent Sin yet, but will do it eventually, and replay EP as well!

I'm glad seeing someone young like you enjoying it! I've played it back I was a teen, in mid 2000's, and nowadays, hardly everyone cares for the series before 3 (even Atlus themselves)

The only time being an adult feels like an achievement instead of a punishment is when you have your own child, raise them well, and have the means to raise them well.

Even then it's still nothing but personal pain and sacrifice for the benefit of others. Which is it's own reward...

Not in the slightest, though I was an adult before I ever got around to playing Persona 2. I thought the writing was kind of over the top and slightly cliche.
You only played Innocent Sin? or both games? Innocent Sin gets pretty wacky and weird midway through the story, Eternal Punishment, on the other hand, is much more grounded in reality (imo)

ep i haven't played yet, but its the most interesting to me, because i know its about adults and not highschool students.

really hope that p6 is about college students at least.

You've convinced me to finally get around to playing this series. I've yet to play any of them and as someone who likes to start from the beginning(in most cases) I was planning to play 1 but if 2 has strong writing like it's shown here then I might start there if you would recommend that. And this might be random but Persona series reminds me Elder Scrolls sometimes in the sense that both of them have first two entries that laid the groundwork for the later ones to follow but unfortunately get mostly ignored while the next three games in the series get most of the spotlight.

I recommend the manga adaptation of Persona 1. Persona 1 has aged really badly, but the manga does a great job of adapting that game's story.

But yeah! the writing in Persona 2 is really good, in my opinion. Innocent Sin (the first part of the duology) has a few pacing issues here and there and can be a bit goofy at times, but Eternal Punishment is simply flawless, in my opinion, by far the best written game in the series, it's really so good!

However, I recommend playing Innocent Sin first; the story in Eternal Punishment won't make much sense if you don't play Innocent Sin first.

Honestly I’ve become so used to stuff that I kinda stopped caring and preferred to search for lesser known games with unique stories

It’s why Mystic Ark became one of my favorite RPGs of all time

But Persona 2 is quite intriguing. PSP is just so damn SLOW and the battle system leaves a bit to be desired even for an SMT spinoff. One day I’ll boot up the PS1 versions.

Yes! The PSP remaster of Innocent Sin is pretty bad; I recommend you play the original PSX version with the fan translation. However, the PSP remaster of Eternal Punishment is excellent, and I consider it the definitive version of that game.

Kinda funny the better versions of each happen to be the versions we didn’t get overseas

What the fuck, Innocent Sin PSP had a whole ass Mario Maker mode that we didn’t get overseas, wild

Damn it, I guess I'll have to get back into Innocent Sin and play it to the end so I can play Eternal Punishment after. I burned out because of the encounter rate but the story was intriguing enough, so maybe its time to get back to it.

I think I only played Innocent Sin all the way through. I started Eternal Punishment but felt burned out on the gameplay loop.
