Has anyone else been feeling more positive spending time here instead of other social media?

social media is only good for game news or game sales

Definitely...over a year ago, I got to where I deleted the apps off of my phone. This helped a lot, especially when I would see horrible news going in the world and it would ruin my days. Now I'll check the desktop version of the sites from time to time. You can get so much more enjoyment out of playing games or even being on here and actively interacting.
i hardly use my phone for this reason too much comes at me when i turn it on might go back to a burner type phone over the summer

im in a gaming pc owners group its a custom built retro gaming pc good community on fb

Only thing i can say regarding this whole forum being "better than social media" is this is a lot more a community forum with generally more positivity than the whole toxic spaces which are twitter, instagram and such

but avoiding most of the conversations and just keeping an eye on general information via social media is probably the safest way to like use social media as long as the replys dont get read (since people like to bash heads with one another on twitter over the smallest discussions ._.)

I just joined yesterday but I'm lovin' it already!
It reminds me of the good old days when I used to terrorize the Egg Cave and the DragonAdopters forums (I swear I won't spam here lol)
I honestly missed forums, and if this helps me finally end the vicious doom scrolling cycle I'll be the happiest gal in town
Every interaction I've had so far has been great!
The only downside (?) is that I've gotten so used to freely swearing on social media that I'm actively struggling to contain my filthy mouth here lmao

Why? Swearing is allowed here.

Yeah, I didn't see any rules against it but still wanted to make a good first impression, so to speak
I'm going to wait at least a week before I drop my first f-bomb lmao

I dropped Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat a few months back and have felt a noticeable improvement in my mental state. Love this place ::heart

I've been reverting myself back to pre-internet 24/7 era, back when I only used it occasionally.

Deeply regretting wasting my time in online games, when I could've enjoyed relaxing and fun, single player, retro and indie games instead.

Same goes for socials, all this time was better off spend reading books, watching movies/tv shows, playing games, getting lost in fictional worlds of media, via escapism.

I'm trying to detox myself, fixing my attention span, and appreciate non internet activities.

It brings a mild nostalgia joy for me.
Imagine the size and activity of this forum, take it down to about 15% of that size, and this is what the majority of enthusiast spaces on the internet used to be like.

It could behave like a modern discord, in say like a heated flame war of yore, or even if two people were excitedly discussing something.

But more often, it was more like... The forums were springboards for further activity. Like these days you find an online space, they will have a discord link and thats that. Historically, there would be boards that were often community created and driven (i.e there wouldnt be the Official The GameTM discord linked on their website. there would be the Unofficial The GameTM Forums)
Finding the board itself was almost a gatekeeping filter of sorts. If you wanted to seek out an enthusiast space online, if there WAS even a dedicated community to your interest, it would require some kind of seeking out and thus a passion for the interest. This greatly limited the volume of online interactions and having to account for a generally uninformed audience.

It felt like things were more about the ideas themselves instead of having to justify every single minutae of an online interaction and how a message could be misconstrued or how a message may appear unpalatabe to an outsider. it felt like the sincerity had yet to be pummeled out of us.

Idk.
everything has changed so fundamentally.
a shadow of the past overtaking the past itself.
it is fun and nice to experience forums again in this capacity.
but it is also gone forever.

I like being able to escape from politics, so yeah I'd say this site is a lot more enjoyable to look and post at than all the main social media sites.

I’ve been feeling really detached from discord as a place for community harbinging. Private forums like this one have more of a feeling of longevity due to forums being a tried and true formula and being one large umbrella as opposed to discord being a community of micro communities that are technically under one roof, but are they really? Discord users are more detached compared to forum users and usually have an easier being stuck up or above it all. Not to say forums can’t be the same, look no further than British forums for the true definition of snarky self satisfied arsehole (me).

I'm pretty happy here, although I don't usually use other social media. I'm quite comfortable here.

I've never really clicked with social media. I remember back when I was 13, I really, really wanted to use Facebook because that was what everyone was using. It wasn't exactly new by that point, but most people I knew hadn't made the switch to mostly using Twitter yet, and wouldn't for at least a few years. At first I loved it, but I quickly came to realize that it wasn't really what it was made out to be. I never really interacted with anyone on it outside of some games that were barely even games. Using it didn't feel like a fun way to keep up with and interact with friends and family whenever and wherever I wanted, it felt like turning that into a job you were more obligated to do because if you didn't then you wouldn't be involved in their lives. So I stopped using it and just kept in touch the old fashioned way, with phone calls and at family gatherings and such. I tried Twitter eventually, but just couldn't stand the post limit, and Reddit was never really something I clicked with either. About the closest I ever really felt good using were things like Skype and Discord, but specifically with small friend groups that I would game with regularly, and forum sites like this. That smaller, more localized and personal feeling I think just makes everything feel better, and by extension makes me feel better about using it.

Today's SNS are completely defective objects, which do not truly allow you to achieve your purpose.

Netizen 'Hello, I would like to use your products. Is that possible?'.

Facebook 'Yes, but you won’t find what you signed up for on your feed, but only what I like and what you should also become addicted to.

The pages you follow are not good enough, because even if they don’t violate any rules, they don’t publish the quantity and on the days we say and we are not willing to pay to promote this, because it should be them paying us
'.

X and Instagram 'Most of the readers are just miserable NPC lurkers, so if you interact by giving reactions and shares, you are definitely a bot, therefore, your profile is now blocked until further notice. Thank you anyway for using our service'.

Reddit 'I allow adult material, but I have no filters on my feed to choose if on that particular day a user wants only information. Here therefore are all the new photos and videos from OnlyFans profiles for today! Anyway, I am actually not the successor to the old forums at all'.

4 Chan 'For us freedom also means allowing the lack of discipline, hate and misinformation (that has been scientifically debunked for years), to continue spreading and thriving for the rest of your lives'".

I only used facebook and yup its bad , cut it few years ago.

Discord well..... I deleted discord yesterday i just cant get the hang of it anymore i don't know if its the people im with there feels a lack of something i cant explain like there is few people worth talking to but outside of that its pointless? I think im just used to live without discord at this point like i spent 9 months away from it and my life changed yeah its pretty crazy.

I have to use whatsapp for communication.

Youtube well i can tell ragebait content and i don't watch everything that talks about something i already know like "why x thing is good" i know why so why waste time? I just watch some WarCraft 3 pro matches

I been to few forums but they are so dead this site is pretty cool.

I'm pretty new to the forum, even though my account is a bit older, but so far I'm quite enjoying my time here and have even stopped looking at the WoW forums, where I used to spend a lot of time. It really helps that this forum is much less restrictive and has a lot of interest-specific subforums

Not really, all internet social medias are pretty much equally toxic to your mental health. This place just less so because people here are kinda less confrontational about stating their opinions.
What makes you think that

it's a nice place to talk, at the classic forum format gives the impression of pages of a book or magazine, where information have a sense of coordination, without an endless scrolling.

I use to spend time on GameFAQs forums, but find myself returning to this community more often.
EDIT: I don't use social media FB/X etc. unless I'm selling retro games and systems.
