here's a character i'm actually wondering about... would Hibari count as trans?
They wish to be considered a girl in basically every context, female pronouns, class, uniform, anything you can think of. They don't want anyone to know they are "actually a guy". They are in love with a guy (not meaning much I know but just including it for the sake of argument), even their father, a yakuza boss, considers them to be one of his daughters. The only time they ever get referred to as male is in private because its supposed to be a secret from everyone. They even want to start hormones so they can grow breasts.
For all intents and purposes, this sounds like a trans character. Except the mangaka said Hibari isn't transgender, just a crossdresser.
Should we count them, since the character themselves wishes to use female pronouns, or should the author's word override the text? (this is an old rom-com from the 70's and the twist is that the love interest is "actually a guy". Pretty transphobic context when viewed through a modern lense but considering that both of the characters do end up with feelings for each other, and everyone who knows Hibari keeps their secret, its definitely a little LGBTQ+ friendly, especially for the time.)
