Guilty pleasures?

I have a few

Bart's Nightmare
-Everyone says it's one of the worst games on Super Nintendo, but I don't have a problem with it. The controls are smooth at times, the graphics has the same animation style as the show, and the gameplay, while difficult at some parts, it's still fun.

Hotel Mario
- Aside from the corny meme cutscenes, the actual gameplay isn't too bad. Has a Mario Bros. style gameplay, there are powerups such as mushrooms and fire flowers, get 30 coins to get a 1up by opening and closing door ls for a few times, and you can select any level you want once the level is completed. Despite the hate it gets, it's a very standard arcade style Mario game.

Wha? Thats like best prince since prince 1, the others are so forgettable the only thing I remeber about em is that prince is too snob to eat pomegranates.

Now prepare yourselves for true jank than only a mother (and I) can love
Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc

Thanks for reminding me, now I can finally participate in the waifu thread.
Dude I love anything Joan of Arc related ❤️ ❤️ Did you play the tactics RPG on the PSP which is now also on PSN?

I think the closest game I can think of that would match is Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Muramasa Rebirth. (Though I will argue that it is NOT a bad game by any stretch of the imagination)

Like yes, I've only ever seen praise for it, but at the same time it doesn't get as much attention as other Vanillaware games, but I guess that's what happens when you keep changing publishers. Plus, I can see people saying it's not as good as Odin Sphere or Dragon's Crown and how the story is not that good or interesting. (I'm not mentioning 13 Sentinels because comparing anything to 13 Sentinels is straight up unfair imo)

I will admit, most of it might be because of nostalgia since I played the original on Wii so much in 5th grade, but I love Muramasa and instantly bought Rebirth when it was released. Outside of just how beautiful it looked, it was just so fun to play. I actually got so good that I have tried speedrunning it once. (Beat one story in an hour and 5 minutes iirc). Not to mention I replayed it just so many times in my life to the point where it might be my most replayed game.

I always joke about being excited about them porting it to the Switch so I can finally have an excuse to do my 9th playthrough of the whole game.

Honestly allot of the zelda games are pretty good I yet played one that was outright bad, No I don´t count the CDI games they are not offcial games.

My favorites has to be orcale of ages and seaons. Man I wish Nintendo did like a collection and released the third game they planned.
Oh the Oracle games are PEAK Zelda my guy!! I remember watching my classmates play them in absolute envy back when they had GB Colours and I was stuck with my b/w GB pocket. I especially had a hard-on for the Switch Hook and time travel elements of Ages, I thought it was the coolest thing ever  I then later bought Link's Awakening used from a guy in the class next door, which was granted not the same, but it definitely scratched the itch ❤️

Also, I will die on the hill that the remake doesn't hold a flicker to the original. The chiptune is miles better than whatever muted melasses the remake's got going on, and the 8-bit sprites look infinitely better than the plastic/clay-like artstyle the remake's got going. Plus I never had an issue with constantly going into the menu to switch items, considering how fast it was and that I liked the jingle that played whenever you selected something ?

Any Dynasty Warrior Games. I know they are dumb, they destroy your Square button, all of them are pretty much the same. But I loooooove them XD

And I know I am not the only one :3

I have Dynasty Warriors 3-5 on the PS2 and spent days playing through those games in college.

There is for sure a level of jank to the game. But knowing how to cheese the end boss sometimes is the only way to win. (I'm looking at you MK9, and most fighting games.)

I don't mind the jank, honestly! I like the arenas, the character models, the idea of fighting with fists vs weapons. Oh! And pulling off some sweet ass moves. Luke's lightsaber throw! Vader's lighting bolt! Unlocking new outfits, new character, running the gauntlet! Those were some fun teenage memories.

I'll throw in another guilty pleasure and will take all the hate for it. Resident Evil 5.

It's a comfort game for me. It reminds me of a summer in my 20s when my friend and I cheesed the brown egg cheat. It's a b-movie to just chill with a friend with and have fun. Why, just last year I had a herniated disc in my back, was layed up on the couch, depressed. My friend suggested Steam Link and RE5 and for a few hours, everything felt okay. ?

Resident Evil 5 is a well-received game with positive reviews that had justified criticism for companion AI being a form of DRM and trying to do the same thing as RE4 but worse. I never seen it described as janky or a bad game at all.

RE6 got lambasted much worse... Also, all Resident Evil games are B-movies in game form, I think people just accept them as classics and let them get away with Neil Breen level of writing and voiceover... At least Umbrella laptops work! xD

But I won't describe any Resident Evil as guilty pleasure because they're probably as mainstream as Japanese game can get. If anything, even Metal Gear or Final Fantasy have scenes you might find hard to explain to older people walking on you, but RE? It's a very normie series, blowing zombies with a grenade launcher and all.

Ah, one exception, Resident Evil Survivor is so ugly and janky it's kind of embarrassing enjoying it unironically (and it has replay value with multiple paths, endings and guns to unlock).

i dont quite see where the guilt is in that pleasure

Guilty pleasure is a tricky term, if you really enjoy something you can probably argue the merit of the thing. I used to apply it to things like Road House, but as I got older I was more comfortable saying Ben Garzarra is an amazing villain, the movie is a pleasant low-stakes ride (until the admittedly drab escalation of violence at the end), and Swayze is basically operating at Peak Fuck-a-bility, like humans just aren't supposed to look that attractive.

I can think of a few other movies like that, but I can't think of a game. They're such a time investment, I would never keep going back if I didn't think they were good.

(I fear the answer for a lot of people is gacha games and gambling mechanics, it's *depressingly* easy to feel guilt and pleasure pulling the lever on a slot machine.)

Honestly, it's because I can see why people would think it's not good on a gameplay level.

There's a lot of backtracking, the map isn't super-reliable all the time, it's a bitch to collect enough souls to make new swords, and you're most likely going to go into every boss fight underleveled and unable to use the cool new sword you obtained from it because you don't have the right amount of strength and vitality.

I'm so sorry....

I like Mega Man X5.

LOOK! HEAR ME OUT! It has a TON of issues, but most levels are short enough not to bother me. I've always preferred to play as X, so X5 is HEAVEN for my gameplay style. And, at the end of it all, you get to have some pretty epic fights, cute callback runbacks, and get an ending I genuinely see as a satisfying conclusion to lead into the Zero series.

That said, I'm not blind. I know its flaws and I know them well. I just like it for my own sake.

I've played megaman battle network 4 far more times that it deserves, and am still compelled by some unholy force to do all 3 playthroughs whenever I start a new save

I feel that "guilty pleasure" is when you'd be embarrassed if someone sees you enjoying it, like if you have a reaction similar to Dark Helmet when he was caught playing Spaceballs toys:

There's absolutely some games I'd rather minimize than explain to a passer-by. xD Watching "so bad it's good" action movies doesn't usually work this way, but a cheesy melodrama might.

None. If someone else thinks it's goofy or whatever, that's cool. They're welcome to play with me and see if it's as bad as they think it is. Or maybe playing with someone who sees it a different way will change their take on it. I just like seeing what's out there, good, bad, and in between.

Resident Evil 6 is widely disliked, and I won’t argue against that, but playing co-op with my friend after finishing RE5 was still a lot of fun, so I still have a bit of fondness for it.

Evil Zone. It's a PS1 fighting game that is ROUGH gameplay wise, but it's very charming. Every character in its cast is based on some stereotypical anime trope, and between battles there are "Next Episode Previews" and stuff of the like. Combine that with a very early English anime dub vibe, and you get a game that is just charming enough to offset its poor gameplay. I love my copy. Even downloaded bonus costumes that came on a PS1 Demo Disc I found for $1! Score!
I hate the censor in US version, so I gave Erel her old costume.

i big agree with the whole 'no thing should be considered a guilty pleasure if it is something that brings you joy' but as a decidedly non-weeb kinda person i do feel a bit of pangs of that when i play Muse Dash

Driv3r with the Definitive Edition mod.

It's actually really good, it's just buggy and the mod fixes most of the real bad bugs anyways. Seriously, I know this is a guilty pleasure thread and not a recommendation thread but make this your next guilty pleasure.

To me the entire Driver series is kinda like that, with most people never making it past the first mission (and free mode being horrible in D1 as you can't lose cops or repair at all), second was too easy since wanted status reset on swapping cars, and third was broken on release.

There's also San Francisco and Parallel Lines that I never played, those have mostly positive reviews.

Driver was Grand Theft Auto before GTA 3. And sometimes less is more because minigames and shooting in GTA distract from the driving, often too much... I recently finished that garage trials several times and the first Driver keeps being hard after, it was the PS1 Battletoads, everybody wanted to play it, very few people could progress.

So yeah I need to check Dr3v3r 3 with mods and play the rest of the series, I miss checkpoint driving games.
