General Off-topic Chat (AKA let's break the ice)

Friday, December 6th, 2024:

Today, I was putting my dishes in the dishwasher, and I tried to turn it on, but it wasn't turning on. "Oh fuck," I thought with a grimace, "I'm going to have to call my landlord about this, and they're going to send up some idiot to spend several hours fixing it while I'm supposed to be cleaning my apartment." But then I realized that, about 19 months after I first moved into this place, the little sheet of plastic provided by the manufacturer was still attached to the dishwasher's controls. I never even noticed it was there. I took the sheet off, enjoying the tactile sensation of doing so, and voila – my dishwasher worked again!

I'm glad, but I have no idea why that little sheet of plastic suddenly started interfering with the dishwasher's controls now. There wasn't anything trapped underneath it, and it hadn't blocked me from using the controls for the hundreds of times I've used this dishwasher before. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!? Thank you for tuning into today's Gorse Update™. :)

What a silly dishwasher, too afraid of a piece of paper

I first read "spinach omelette" and thought "what the heck is that monstruosity".

Omlettes are better with potatoes.

Friday! I strategically planned all of my remaining PTO to not work Fridays this month. I'm just waiting for my partner to wake up so we can play Crash Team Racing

I was thinking about the so-called "Golden Era" of YouTube (2008-16) and how fun it was...

You had the billion AVGN wannabes (whom were only entertaining because not of their quality, but of their lack thereof), you had Machinima aggregating content like crazy, you had iDubbbz's Content Cop, you had the animators, you had those godawful reaction channels, you had that "Drama Alert" crap, you had those weird MCNs like "Unknown Reviewers" which came into existence --and vanished-- overnight, you had edgy stuff like I Hate Everything, and you had a lot of smaller channels making a dent here and there.

It's amazing to me how some of that stuff was even allowed on the platform, and how most of it has been completely wiped off the site.
Initially Google didn't follow any moral code regarding YouTube.

I remember that back in the 200X, all the episodes of 'Dragon Ball' were uploaded without permission split into at least two parts and even in the following decade, you could still find things like all 114 episodes of the first season of 'Saint Seiya' or even films from 'City Hunter'.

In addition Google would come out with statements like 'We don't care about this issue, because it's not our fault, every channel will take responsibility for its content', but then the original rights holders started to raise their voices and this kind of content gradually began to disappear.

At the same time the more controversial content started to be censored, because the companies paying for advertising don't want to associate with anything that could damage their brand.

In my opinion it didn't need to go this far, because It would have been enough to simply add a disclaimer saying 'This ad is automated, so, as a company we have nothing to do with this channel and its content', but by now the ship has long since sailed.

My cousin and I traded that one back and forth all the time. It was great.

Leasing a house is -more- straightforward with less con-crap than the entire apartment-market. Adam Smith's philosophy on landlords comes to mind.

Good thread bump
