Thank you very much for the explanation.

I don't see the greatest Continent of them all on the list? The Great United States of America. Now i know what you're thinking. "But Crash the U.S.A. isn't a continent, it's a country. "
And with that thinking you are wrong. Our lord and savior the magnanimous Donald Trump had already purchased Canada and Mexico from the Illuminati. The rest of it is smoke and mirrors to distract people from the truth.

P.S. /s obviously

Technically Australia is part of Oceania since the former is a country.

America is a continent but USA is the country.
Here in my region our geography recognizes America as a whole continent (north and south are just subdivisions here).
I wonder which parts of the world use that system today and what parts don't.

I think that depends of the context:

In a purely geographical aspect America is a single homogenous landmass the same way that "Eurafrasia" is also one.

In a geopolitical one there's a clear disparity between North America and South America.

I remember that when I was younger I assumed that Oceania was a different name for Australia until I've learnt that New Zealand and other regions such as Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

I read that it's not a continent stricto sensu but can be qualified as such.

You are all part of Germany so I don't bother with the finer details of the subdivisions

I am joking I am joking of course I have no clue why the continents are made out like they are as the simply make no sense neither in separation of sea and land nor culturally.

If I could categorize them into divisions that make more sense to me.
by sea and landmass:
Europe and Asia and Africa as one Afroeuresia combining them
And America as a Continent combing South and North
And Oceania.
Antarctica

Culturally (Not a expert here)
Europe
Africa
Asia
Arabia (Middle East)
India
North America
South America
Oceania and Australia as separate
Antarctica

like I said I am not an Expert and I may have some things wrong so don't quote me on that.

The thing is that, geopolitically or culturally, the division North Ametica/South America makes less sense than Latinamerica.
It makes more sense just as a continent division.
But for me is like saying Europe is a West Asian continent, India and other parts South Asia, etc.
Depending on how we look at it geography can get weird, ¿isn't it? :loldog ::cirnoshrug
And trying to going by tectonics too.

I am of course Joking for those people who don't see a joke when they get it served on a platter with desert.

Yeah, I've learned that 'the number of continents you think there are' definitely changes based on where and when you learned them. ::sailor-embarrassed

When I was being taught geography in the early 2000s USA, the designation for the Pacific Ocean countries was a continent called "Australia", and was just understood to encompass all the other islands there, as well. I think this changed in the US soon after I learned it? Most of the younger people I know refer to it as "Oceania", which makes a lot more sense to me, to be honest.

Most often it's a political thing, as well. National languages and public schooling really start appearing and standardizing in the late 1800s/early 20th century, which is when I think a lot of this started getting decided.

I'm from Scotland! Which is in Europe. Admittedly I don't wanna live here forever, not Europe per se, but the United Kingdom isn't really the best and it's growing to be worse for someone like me.
Still, It's cool how many people from different places there are here.
