Crystal's sprites are good yeah.

In a way Goodra is closer to the old style round and cute dragon after several gens of scarier looking ones.

Bone Dragon from Yoshi's Story! The single heads weren't so bad but the multi-headed ones scared me as a kid.

Probably the first dragon I fought in a game was actually treated a lot less dramatically. In the game Warlords II, one of the units is a dragon (I can't really find a picture of the sprite, unfortunately). The first game I played where fighting a dragon was actually treated as a big deal though was probably the dragons in Adventure.

If Pokemon count then I think Vibrava or Salamance in either Emerald or Colosseum. Other than that probably either Mist Dragon from FFIV or Bahamut in FFIII.

Probably the Ender Dragon, even though it is technically not so old

Maybe he's not technically a dragon. But he breathed fire and I definitely thought he was a dragon the first time I saw him back in '87.
