Yes if its acknowledged that you aren't seen in the game like lets say CNC games where you are mostly called "commander" and "general" then it works , but in a game like silent hill? Where would harry be getting his actions from? Through revelations from the radio? I don't think so , the difference between games and movies is you are a part of the game world whether you are a character represented on the screen or an off screen presence like mention above , in movies you watch a guy go through actions that you have no control over , in a game you are the one to decide what the character does , the main character usually the player is a way for you to communicate with the game and the game to communicate back with you , of course you don't always get to influence every decision in the game for the sake of story and such.
In Final Fantasy games we are always in the shoes of the protagonist either firion , cecil , bartz and more we are always seeing events unfold from their perspective save for when the story takes these characters out for a bit and puts us in different people shoes , like galuf rescuing the party , or zell punching the guards to get the weapons or tifa and cid when cloud goes crazy.
In terms of battle I think from the game world perspective the actions you do are a set of individual actions the characters do like casting the right spell because they want to or attacking the weakest enemy to finish him off , it can also be influenced by the team leader like lets say cloud telling aerith to heal the team or it can be planned out before the battle which is something I assume many people do when playing FF games like the opening move the spells they cast etc.
