Final Fantasy Thread

okay. just checking. i'd say for 1 and 2, go with the psp versions because of the newer extra stuff. one boss in ff1 gets their own theme music instead of sharing a boss theme. and ff4 for the psp has the same content plus an extra bit of story from the 3d remake included. 5 and 6 are unfortunately left out of the psp library, the gba ports are the ones with the most content.
also, make sure to check out ff4 ultima, it's an extensively reworked version of ff4 but with tons of new stuff, extra bosses, a new game plus option and more. but i would play it after going through ff4 normally.
Is FF4 Ultima a romhack or a official release by Square?

okay.
ff1 has 4 dungeons that each open up upon the defeat of a fiend. one for earth, fire, wind and water. it starts off with 5 floors and each dungeon adds 5 if i remember correctly. they are somewhat randomly shuffled around for each run through, but the layouts for each individual floor is the same.
each dungeon has 4 bosses; and uses bosses from other ff games. earth has the dark world bosses from 3, fire has the elemental lords from 4, 5 and 6 has some notable bosses from their games in the water and wind dungeons respectively. you will have to run through a couple of dungeons twice to fight them al and to collect the treasure chests, earth is shorter, so you have to make 4 runs through it.
the psp version has another dungeon open up when you are ready to enter the temple of fiends again for the endgame. it has a boss that changes upon how good you are at clearing the floors in it. there are 8 forms of this boss and vary in difficulty.
ff2 has in both the gba and the psp version an unlockable post game story that features 3 characters from the story along with a new 4th one. if you plan on playing this story, make sure to power up minuw, josef, and richard before they leave your party. oyu will be using them in the new story mode.
i haven't checked out the new dungeon but it should have some new weapons for each character that joins you and opens up as you proceed through the story. i plan on checking out when i get ready to play through the psp version soon.
ff4 has a new training dungeon unlocked before the final one and you have the option of swapping characters and getting them exclusive new gear in the new area that opens up at the base of mt ordeals. the post game dungeon has a new boss with an even stronger final weapon for each character and brings back the snes version of zeromus as a super boss. [he had a completely different look in the snes/easy type version]
ff5 adds a new job and dungeon after completing the game. i borrowed the game from a friend before getting to check it out, so my knowledge runs out on this. @starseeker300 just finished up a full playthrough of the game, so he should be able to fill you in much better on the extra dungeon in 5. and @Pandaprewmaster325 is very knowledgeable about each game and can help you out with 6. all i know is that a scrapped super boss is brought back for the post game dungeon in that one.
the 3d remakes of 3 and 4 also have some stuff unique to them; if you want me to, i can tell you about those as well.
so the sealed temple entrance unlocks at around the same time you can get the mime job and thus giving you access to the gladiator, oracle, and cannoneer jobs. The dungeon itself only properly unlocks after you beat the final boss and it has 2 major sub areas stretching out from a crossroads that you have to go back and forth between to unlock the central path in which all the 3 superbosses reside, you can beat the superbosses in any order, but only enuo unlocks the necromancer job and the boss rush mode by the entrance, and he also requires you to beat two regular bosses before you can get to him, which are stronger versions of twintania and the sol canon.

as for the jobs themselves, cannoneer and gladiator were fun to use, gladiators finisher ability is hilariously broken and cannoneer's open fire has a chance of instant death. oracle sucks but gives mime and freelancer the highest magic bonus upon mastery, i didn't really get to play around with necromancer because i beat enuo last and the only thing left at that point was the boss rush but it seems to be a better version of black mage, you have to learn its spells by killing specific enemies with a necromancer., wish it unlocked with the other 3

overall it was enjoyable but i would suggest looking up a map of the temple online, at least for the early part. and look up strategy guides for archeodemon(stronger version of twintania), omega mk2, and neo shinryu, they require specific strategies

It seems weird to lock a whole new job class behind a end-game boss. Does the GBA version at least have a new game plus or something so you can play around with it more?

no, only a handful of final fantasy games have a new game plus option.

Yeah that's the sad part I want to run around the worlds of FF games after winning and just goof with people lol.

i was trying to do a bit of leveling up and i happen to get a battle on the swamp map. took this screenshot before getting the battle underway. i won.

yeah, i do this pretty much whenever the option comes up. my two new recruits are named rydia and faris. rydia will eventually be a summoner and i was thinking samurai for faris.
Im a man who believes in equal rights equal fights ::eggmanlaugh

Most of my casters are girls save for the geomancer idk if its intentional or not but girls cost 1400 for hire while boys 1500 I don't see much difference so hiring a girl army can be less costly

i noticed that too. i haven't seen any real difference between the two. in disgaea, the male and female differences were usually applied to a couple of stat differences and unique abilities between the classes. skulls do extra damage with spells and specials, but they cost 50% more sp to use, while their counterpart, mages, have a permanent 50% discount on spells and specials. fire, ice and wind use 4 points of sp for any class or character to use. skulls have to use 6 points, but they get the damage increase. mages only spend 2 points.
there is a small difference in stats as well, males tend to be slightly faster, but females are more accurate. guys tend to wield swords and axes; females get lances and bows/guns.

also, what do the crystals do in ff tactics? i just saw one pop up in my current battle.

I still have to figure the difference between guys and girls in tactics gameplay wise , I think just a theory guys get higher stats otherwise no point in having them cost 100 extra Gil.

Crystals if blue restore health/mana and if yellow do the same but also offer you a new ability to learn if one dead enemy is nearing turning into something you might save with emulator until you get a crystal if needed taking into account that you can reach it before the enemy.

Disgae or whatever its called looks like worth a try but ey don't dive much into game mechanics cuz honestly I won't understand anything.

i'll check into the differences and see what's up later.
i was seeing blue crystals and it showed me a menu with learn abilities or restore hp/mp. i did a rest because one of my characters died. i keep hoping for this one goblin formation to show back up. it was just three of them. it would be the perfect group to train my lovely warrior ladies and bring them up a level or 2.
the gender differences don't mean much when you get to the post game, where the ability for each class is what matters most. a character being slightly bad with magic means nothing with a fully powered up staff and a full set of ultra rare handmade armor.

Huh weird usually blue crystals never showed me ability option , ehh I honestly don't think its that important im a man of a practicality whatever works works.

could be part of the mod. it is supposed to tweak a few things like making abilities more reasonable to purchase. there was a move that cost like 4,000 jp to get. i think it was jump.
i found this on reddit: a short discussion about the gender differences in tactics:
basically, guys have slightly more hp growth and a 25% better strength while females get more mp and their magic mirrors the strength stat for males.

As I suspected.

Play with mod first try? What mod?

So I am very passionate about playing Japanese games with translations that are as accurate to the original as they can be (if they exist). Does anyone know of any retranslation mods/hacks for Final Fantasy 8 or Tactics? I know these both have massive translation issues, and I've never been able to find any retranslations mods/hacks. For Tactics, I'd prefer one that isn't a WOTL translation. I want something that's accurate to the original Japanese, and doesn't have the flowery, nonsense dialogue and style of WOTL. I actually prefer the original PS1 translation to WOTL.

For all the other games I have:
FF1- Chaos Rush Edition
FF2 - Chaos Rush Edition
FF3 - Chaos Rush Edition
FF4 – Namingway Edition
FF5 - RPGe
FF6 - Revised Old Style Edition
FF7 - Beacause Edition

And for FF8 I know of Enable MiniMoog, which removes the censorship, but I don't know of any retranslations.

To my understanding FF9, 10, 10-2, 12, Crisis Core, Dirge Of Cerberus, and Type-0 have fine translations, but if anyone knows contrary, please let me know. Thanks!

I see well I would still prefer an original version experience prior to getting any mods.
i think i have an original version in my game collection, i'll take a look and see.

i looked in the repo, there's nothing like that in there. there are some European versions which might be a little bit close to what you're looking for. you might try checking out the internet archive. they have some game collections over there.

Hey everyone, I got a question, what is the absolute best way to play the original ff tactics, is it war of the lions tweak, ff tactics prime, something else. what do they change from the base games?

My suggestion to you is play it in its original form then once done and want to replay it play it with mods and changes , the vanilla version seems fine to me ::agree

Infact im booting it up in a moment.

I understand the sentiment, but I want to cut out mindless grinding
tactics prime has the script from war of the lions and a few adjustments made to the jp needed to learn abilities.
i just checked and v5 of prime just got uploaded. the description has a brief list of changes.

There isnt much grinding tbh you can look up there find my secret of infinite XP , however you better emulate this thing without emulator save its less fun cuz u can't run from battles.

(And other things)
