Final Fantasy Thread

Final Fantasy 3 is whack looks like you can become a scholar marking the first ever appearance of the scholar model in the FF games the same model updated and used in 4 and 5.

So you can smack things with books.... A fantasy indeed!

Also its the first game to have moogles here is their first appearance ever

Summoners are called evokers here and summons have 2 uses , one offense which is indicated by black magic icon and defense/support indicated by white magic icon

The game has you cast toad/mini in certain sections toad on yourself that is same for mini , same for jobs this is first iteration of the job system and it kinda sucks lol , you need job points to switch between jobs and you need to remove all equipment.... To switch jobs square couldnt code auto equip like 5 so they just did this and its clunky.

Thing is you dont even know what a job does cuz there is no description so you have to guess like i didn't know what evoker was supposed to be it doesnt help some jobs are unlocked prior to having their equipment available.

This game also marks the first ever jumping dragoons since in FF2 the dragoon was gareth who didnt jump and also fought by sword instead of spear like the rest of the dragoon appearances.

FF3 is basically FF1 but Warriors of the light can speak which is nice

Oh and you get charcters following you kinda cool small thing you can also talk with them.

I think Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2 are very underrated. They're not perfect games [Advance's law system has been the cause of much annoyance for me] but they're sweet. Marche's journey in Advance was touching and Luso's quest in A2 was fun.

While Advance isn't as dark as Tactics/WotL, the themes of escapism and having to learn to live with the ups and downs of the real world which I feel tends to be underappreciated or ignored. I'm still playing through A2 but from where I'm at so far it's just a fun isekai adventure with none of the weird fan-service that anime tends to have.

Also the soundtracks for both games are top-notch, I've listened to Echoes That Tie the Worlds and Putting Words Together at the end of every summer before school started up again, they perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being at the end of a long adventure and moving onto the next one.

Which species are the Moogles btw? Small bears?
they were suppose to be an entirely different species upon their initial creation. i found a wiki page that covers some of their background and there are a ton of pictures of all of the various times that they have appeared in the series and other series as well.
i found this bit on their about their name too.
"The moogle's Japanese name, Mōguri (モーグリ), is a portmanteau of the words for mole (土竜, mogura?) and bat (蝙蝠, kōmori?). "Moogle" is the localized version of Mōguri, losing the pun, though "moogle" has started to appear in Japanese sources as well."

Mole... bats? Ok, they sure don't look like any moles I've seen. I guess that explains why they are always squinting.

Now I've learnt something interesting!

They are adorable with their closed eyes (which usually are a sign of gentle characters in anime as I heard) and their red noses (that may be their mole part).

it seems like they took parts of each and mixed them together and made a few adjustments during the process. don't forget, they were originally meant to be ice nomads, wandering through artic tundras and surviving in harsh frozen weather; which would explain the white fur to help them blend into the environment. the claws would help with slippery surfaces, and wings for short jumps over cracks.

Its done! Final Fantasy 3 is finished.
Final Fantasy III (English v1.3)[2019]-screenshot(4).png

This marks the 10th Final Fantasy game i played with Final Fantasy 3 finished i have played everything from 1-9 tactics included through september 2024-april 2025 no month between this period passed without playing Final Fantasy.

So how is Final Fantasy 3 original version? Its crap what do you expect from a NES game? Its outdated by all means really.

There is a lot of jank less than i expected but still lots of jank the job system can be a bit weird and the the game forces you to use certain jobs at certain points which can be pretty annoying if you cant afford the job points.

Job levels i don't think do much? Other than add HP and to casters add more spell pointa something of a mini level up i think.

Of course graphics wise its trash , FF4 saw more coloring and a huge improvement in backgrounds , FF5 even became better with more stylish looks , and FF6 is the ultimate result that still has good 2d graphics to this day thanks to its art style.

Its worth mentioning this game uses the dwarf model or whats going to be the dwarf model in 4/5 it uses it for the viking job which i didn't really try some sort of pure tank job i think , its also in this game the dragoons get their signiture "jump" ability i won the saranoia boss fight by spamming jump as jump avoids damage kinda cool.

The game is like "alright" for most of it but becomes utter trash in the final section the dungeon is way too long and WHOM bright idea it was to make it so that xande casts meteor you have to climb 7 floors for that but first you need to climb down 7 floors to get the weapons needed.

The party facing a strange looking being notice the summoner design and the iconic horn.

Final Fantasy III (English v1.3)[2019]-screenshot(1).png

Victory dance for the devout more like victory sneeze.

So you get these 2 jobs in the end the Ninja who is the ultimate warrior and the sage the ultimate caster

Final Fantasy III (English v1.3)[2019]-screenshot(2).png

The team doing another victory dance as ninjas/sages

The final dungeon is horrid too many paths too many things to fight and very strong ones i went in with 99 HI and normal potions and i ran out of them in the dark world had to use 4 elixirs to regen spells back at least square understood that having 9 spells is stupid so they made it so that you can go up to 48 spells or 55 or more.... Even if you beat xande you will have to face the REAL enemy a could if darkness yeah thats the final boss a literal could how dissapointing

Its not even over cuz you lose first time against that cloud and chase it to the dark world here is a disaster in my opinion of game design so you can rush to the boss fight and lose real bad it misses everything you throw at it what you should do is enter the 4 chambers at each corner and kill the 4 bosses whom of which fire and earth can kill you easily after each fight a warrior of dark shows up to help you so do that while being constantly interrupted by random encounters cuz square thought its a good idea to reuse FF2 system which counts how many steps you walked and throws an encounter at you after x number of steps its bad real bad.

And this isn't even over after those crappy mini boss fights which are crap btw you fight the final boss who only has 1 ability yeah this the best square could come up with and the worst part is you can't even save!!!! This near 4 hours worth of dungeon can be deleted in an instant if you lose well thats not the case here im the man with the machine gun? No the man with the emulator ::goblingrin i have the ability to save inside the dungeon and the ability to speed up game speed which was very useful cuz the game expects you be at least level 50~ something to enter the dark world well i wont grind all that it would take ages i fast forward and just fight like that in few minutes im 1 level up i get to level 55 this way in 30 minutes from 50 to 55.

Not to mention the worst ambush/back attack i seen in the series its like the light warriors have no situational awareness and oh if you win and forget to to check the formation you get the ones at the back be the front in the next fight what a disaster....

The game tried to have a story but not really , and cid looks like a wizard instead of a man who makes airships , it is true the series didn't really take off until FF4.

So all in all FF3 is worse than even FF2 the best NES game is FF1 and that says a lot.

Overall the NES trilogy is the weakest and worst games in the series its not until the SNES trilogy that you get actually decent games the NES ones feel like a protoype of sorts with 1/3 being gameplay protoype and 2 being story protoype.

0/10 game only thing good about it is the cover art

Final Fantasy III (English v1.3)[2019]-screenshot(3).png

The party after defeating ms cloud of darkness

Oh and the stupid watermark hides the 4th name he is called SAMURO

Final note: the music is NES technology trying its best to sound like something it misses by a lot not until FF4 you get something that sounds like music.

I liked FF3 more than the two previous games, which I didn't even finish. However, I did only play re-releases. Not messing around with this NES stuff.

FF3 has better world map exploration IMO. The map opens in layers, dependent on the vehicles you've unlocked. In many games, you get an airship and can go anywhere. Not played much into FF2, but I have the impression odd-numbered FF games do it more often.

I could be wrong, but I think attack and magic multipliers go up with job levels in the NES version. Faint memories from watching HCBailly play the game.

Oh yeah i forgot the airships really no one in FF3 world can engineer an airship that goes over vast amounts of mountains nope..... They haven't figured the tech for that yet what you have is 2 airships one fast and one turtle speed worst yet is there is AIR RANDOM ENCOUNTERS and its so often that it becomes absurd i hate the shadow cave pathway cuz you have to go through some maze to reach it like just give me an airship that moves properly.... And chocobos arent very useful also they are white not yellow big L for square on this.

I played the original so i can understand what the remake improved its how it should be done instead of playing the remake first , thus i can value the remake and see it in different light as it builds and improves upon the OG version well i expect it at least i will take a break from Final Fantasy now probably play something else then try the remake as im just so done with FF3....

I played the NES version of FF3 and I can't agree with such a harsh review. It is definitively a flawed game and the last dungeon is dog shit but the game is perfectly playable and fun up until that point. The graphics are what was possible on the NES. I'd give it like a 5 out of 10.

I know its a bit unfair cuz its outdated and made on the tech of the time and what it allowed , many confusing things made it way less better for example i forgot what mallet does.... What does this job offer? Etc there is no text that explains like FF4 and FF5 , i get this is a 1990 product im playing in 2025 its quite sad they didn't remake it to the PS1 like FF1/FF2 with the new tech it would be a lot better visually/audio wise but yeah the way airships work the shadow cave thing the final dungeon all zeroed everything else that made the game ok , not to mention that the game can fuck you over pretty easily like the water dragon temple and needing to buy spells and all that and i nearly softlocked myself in the elder tree boss luckily i had an elixir that saved the day , its stupid that there is no tents and if i switch from a caster to a melee job i lose the spell points and vice versa , i gotta say magic is a lot better than 1/2 and toad can be pretty strong.

Its just these small and big things that made it a 3/10 experince

You should've played the DS/PSP/Mobile remake. It addresses all of your concerns while maintaining the same turn based gameplay and covering the same story.

not entirely. the psp and i presume the mobile version would be based on the psp one; do fix a few problems, but stuff like the hien boss fight could still softlock; it's not very likely, but it could happen. he has knowledge of that fight, so he can go in better prepared next time. but the job switching now has a sickness phase, for lack of a better phrase. you have to wait from 4 to 16 battles depending on what job you switch from and to. the psp version is definitely the best option, since the new content isn't locked behind the mognet multiplayer thing.
the game will get more difficult as the story progresses, since later bosses get multiple turns per round.

I think yeah since my new phone can handle psp emulator most likely in the future i will

Oh well i guess no more job points cool.

yeah, no job points; just an adjustment phase for the new job. finishing any battle ticks the counter down so you can fight goblins at the starting area and be done adjusting to the new job in like 5 minutes. jobs also have levels in the remake which have some effects in battle, usually being more accurate and dealing more hits and some jobs like dragon and monk will deal more damage with higher job levels.
stats are also predetermined save for hp; i don't remember if the original was like that or not. the black belt/master monk class also gets the most stamina growth around level 34 which is important since that stat determines how much hp you get per level up and more stamina means a higher chance of getting more hp since that is partially randomized. you'll need a lot since the cloud of darkness gets 4 actions per round and can spam its particle beam 4 times in a row if you are unlucky enough for that to happen.
and that's not taking into account the superboss that was added in. you'll need to be max level to fight it with any amount of success.

Ion play this franchise but I like this song that references it
Trust me you don't want to play this utter piece of garbage called Final Fantasy franchise its a stain on humanity.

I don't know how people keep playing and buying this trash it sold 200 million copies by now like HOW???

Like the games are do bad.... The first game is a mess of a code trying to be a game

The second game tries to have a story but it fails misreably

The third game is a failed attempt at trying to fix the first game by adding a job system like they cant even get the name right instead of calling it classes they call it jobs like????

The fourth is a disaster and argubly the biggest disaster since WW2 that befell humanity like it doesn't even have a mini map...

The fifth game tries to fix the gameplay by adding the job should be called class system but it ends up being a mesh mash of poorly coded and balanced abilities and a story so forgetabble that it gets swept under the rug all the time

The sixith game has the worst villian ever written like he is a clown and he is a bad one he cant even do jokes right he is literally a useless worthless pile of colored meat.

The seventh game is even a worse disaster than the 6th it cant even load the overworld until near 8 hours of gameplay and not to mention magic is restricted by colored balls that fail at adding anything gameplay wise , not to mention the poorly made limit breaks that were first introduced in this game it removes any challenge.

The eigth game is a half assed piss poor attempt at romance driven game literally unplayable.

The ninth game has you play as an annoying insufferable monkey who keeps simping over a dumb princess who doesnt even like him.

And if you thought this torment ends boy wait until you play Final Fantasy tactics its the combination of all of the above but made 10 times worse with 1998 game of thrones kid friendly version , and a gameplay so bad it makes you sigh everytime you play it like they tried to mix strategy with RPG and add their shit job system and what you end up is this unholy piece of awful game.

Oh and it doesnt end here the protags are made with worst qualities in any human the 4th game has you play as a war criminal with self image issues , the 6th game has you play as a green haired teenage girl like WHO IN HIS RIGHT MIND THOUGHT MAKING YOU PLAY AS A GREEN HAIRED TEENAGE GIRL IS A GOOD IDEA????? Oh she also doesnt know jack shit and has self esteem issues the whole game , the 7th game has you play a delelu loser who larps as a elite soldier he is so useless his lover dies in front of his eyes and he does nothing , the 8th game has you play as an autistic kid.

I been playing for near 7/8 months these games not because i like them i just want to see will they ever get good but they never do , i know this asshole IRL who thinks square (the ones behind this mess) are master craftsmen who create the best RPGs ever , he is just that stupid that he thinks these games are worth anything..... More than belonging to the trash.

They cant even get the charcters right the dude in the poster of the first game is supposed to be this stupid warrior guy and its been near 40 years and despite all the remakes and re-releases they still cant draw his armor correctly to be in line with the cover art like do you expect them to a good game if they cant even fix this detail???

Everytime i finished one of these games i tear up not because i loved the game and finished a great adventure no because i figure i had the strength to go through these piles of trash and sink 50 hours in each one.

Everytime i beat one i end up feeling empty afterwards not because i beaten a great game but because i know i wasted another month playing a series with games that never get good but i keep expecting them to do like an idiot....

Everytime i beat one of the Final Fantasy games i get the urge to jump from the window so i can forget the memory about me playing this heresy.... All in all never play Final Fantasy trust me it will make your life worse.

On FF3(I only played the 3d remake btw for clarification's sake), I thinks that its the worst of the mainline ff games that I have played (1-5, 13 trilogy, and 15, and I'm also gonna say that I've played the first Bravely Default as well because its relevant to this discussion)

of the Job based games, FF1 is more unique in that you are locked into your jobs for the entire playthrough and both ff5 and bravely default do a job change system better by making every job more or less unique in some way. Out of the 22 jobs in the game (23 in the remake because it adds freelancer), 8 are just upgraded versions of previous jobs making them redundant, and 2 of those eight make all other jobs redundant, and then the red mage job is rendered useless by sage as well. Finally there is scholar, which only exists because of a gimmick for one boss in the entire game. so that's 7 out of the 22 jobs that are completely useless by the end of the game, oh and sage and ninja still outclass most of the other ones except for maybe black belt.

The gameplay is very gimmicky, in this dungeon you have to shrink down which makes physically classes useless, in this dungeon you have to turn into frogs which makes it just plain awful, in this dungeon you have to fight the boss 3 times, for this boss battle you have to use scholar, for this boss battle you have to use dragoon, etc. It leaves no room for experimentation, which is in my opinion half the point of the job based final fantasy games, for example in bravely default i tried a strategy where i used the move that attacks with your defense and double equipped shields and turned my characters into ICBMs, and in FF5, I beat the final boss with a party of all red mages plus the fact that the mimic class exists in that game as well, and even in FF2 i made guy a white mage/monk hybrid and Ricard into a pseudo Dark Knight. FF3 would never let you do anything like that, you have to use what the game s wants you to, when the game wants you to, it misses the point of a job/class system: to experiment.

And lastly the story is nothing special, it just feels like a different draft of FF1's story, though I do have one good thing to say here, when you leave the floating continent for the first time and see how big the world is compared to it and that it just looks like one town on the world map, and that up to this point you were just a big fish in a small pond, is probably one of my favorite story moments in the franchise from what I have played. But, that belies the problem as well, its the only memorable moment from that game, all the other ff games have multiple memorable story scenes or moments that stick with you, where i can barely remember the general outline of ff3's story and will probably completely forget it in a couple years

Overall I would go as far to say FF3, regardless of the version you are playing, is just a worse version of FF1. I genuinely think that it could be skipped by someone wanting to playthrough all the mainline ff games and they would lose nothing overall despite the one moment where you leave the floating continent for the first time

Good post. I've only played like 45 minutes of III's 3D remake but it's something (along with I and II) I'll eventually get to just for completion's sake.

yep. this is all true. i could argue the ds version is just as bad as the nes version due to the onion knight class being locked behind the mognet along with the job exclusive weapons and gear and the training dungeon where you can get elixirs and onion knight gear. 45 hours into the game, level 60, and due to the absurd difficulty bonus that they gave to the late game bosses, it's nearly impossible to beat the final boss without extreme luck.
the psp version sets the extra content to unlock as you play through the game, which makes it a better choice to playthrough.
i will say that it is good for ff3 to exist, since it lays out the job system which is vastly improved upon in 5, tactics, tactics advance 1 and 2, 10-2 and 12's zodiac version. it bears the brunt of the imperfections and flaws which would have hurt the later instalments if it was held back from implementing them so early on.
that and some drawings that i made are based on a couple of classes from the game that i added to my art galleries on deviantart and newgrounds; a couple of which are some of my favorite drawings that i made so far. so, ff3 is a necessary evil to have in the franchise, a painful route on the journey to better games.

FF3 is the definition of a halfway point between 1 and 5. You're not locked into your jobs like 1, but it's not as flexible as 5's Job System.
