You're right. Definitely don't have as much time to grind as I used to. QOL updates have made things so much better in RPGs.

Have you guys heard about Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia?

Heads up final fantasy fans ,if you played this game then you probably know that it's dead ,but you also know that it was one of best mobile games out there
I just wanted to point out that a group of people are making an offline version of the game ,and they are quite active ,I dunno when they will release it but I think it's worth the wait ,check Dissidia Compendium discord server for more info

One of my favorite video games of all time and with it being the first mobile game I went hard on it spoiled the entire space forever. Such intuitive progression and (comparatively) reasonable gacha systems on top of a surprisingly solid story. Great battle system with tons of unique characters coupled with stellar writing full of both fanservice and genuinely interesting explorations of some of the more popular characters.

God it was just so good and nothing has come close to hitting the same since.

Huh interesting news
Also hilarious custom title lmao

Yeah it a was a very good game ,a lot of the what if interactions were so good ,and seing some of 2d only charcaters in their full 60fps glory was a treat (like Edgar) The EoS hit hard ngl ,it was a very nice journey.
Hope the dudes that are working on the offline version make it work ,they also plan to add new content to the game (altough still not 100% confirmed)so maybe we can finally have Red and Rikku

Have played it on and off, but just now realizing it's gone. Ceased operations on February 29th 2024, according to the game that's still on my old phone.

I never liked gacha type games, but I'm willing to give this one a pass solely for the fact that every single character is unlockable for free. The story is also massive and goes all over the place - I never finished it, but really enjoyed all the character interactions.

Anyway, enjoy the only screenshots I have left of apparently lost media now.

By far my favourite gacha game. I loved how deep it felt, and the move to make the characters free and instead it was their weapons you pulled was sort of genius, I never spent a gil and I had a super strong Wakka. I’ll never forget him…
I’ve read a bit about this offline version and wish them all the best, I’d be all over that if it releases!

I haven't played it, but I like the mugshot graphics style. For FF games which I don't like the mugshot style for (basically anything Amano), I use these if I can.

Edit: To clarify, before any Amano fan tries to take my scalp: I think his style is fine for certain materials like manual covers, posters and art books, I just very much dislike seeing it in game, as it rarely reflects how characters actually look (Front Mission, a franchise I love, also has this problem for the first game).

Your scalp is safe one more day.

Yeah the game was sooo generous I had a lot of fully MLB charcaters without even spending a penny , basically half the roaster were fully equipped and it was very easy and enjoyable to do

I never finished the story too ,I liked the lost chapters especially when they meet dead characters lmao ,the gacha here was soo generous and lenient compared to other tbh that's why I liked it so much ,and it's actually challenging.

Currently playing Final Fantasy 16, thoroughly enjoying it. I am thinking of getting The Rising Tide DLC before I get to the ending. I feel like the game truly shines when you unlock the 3rd Eikon. I feel like an unstoppable force mixing dodging and parrying.

I guess this is a good place to plug my series on Squaresoft. link.

I'm not one to talk too much about Modern Final Fantasy. I don't particularly love what they've done with the series as of late and I don't play MMORPGs. FFXVI was ok, but I don't like that it was really light on RPG elements or exploration. No party members either.

Most modern Final Fantasy I've played, besides getting the Pixel Remasters, was 13. I definitely like the more classic stuff but I hear 15 and 16 are good.
I kinda like what I played of 13, although I didn't get very far into the first one. I mean, I also kinda like Final Fantasy II, and VIII, which I believe is the worst of the mainline entries, is gonna get a play-through soon from me cause I never actually beat it.

As with just about all FF games, they're really divisive.
I can't form an opinion on 16 more than "I don't find it interesting" because I don't own it and have only had the opportunity to play it in small bursts at my brother's place. But from that I don't really like the setting, and I'm not into those kinds of action games so it's a hard sell for me.

15 is weird in that many people are burned from what it was first shown off as (Versus XIII), and then how it released sort of unfinished (like, in that they actually had to add/change pieces of the main game in updates) but I find it pretty enjoyable (as I've said in the tier-list thread, I don't think any mainline FF really reaches "bad" territory, but som are a million times better than others). I like the modern-day-esque setting and I really like the main cast. It's got a really weird combat system too, that oftentimes feels like it plays itself.

I should replay 13, because I haven't played it since it was new, and I was pretty young then so I'd like to get a fresh perspective on it.

XIV is tolerable up until about DT I would say but the modern games just aren't the same thing, Yoshi-p is obsessed with trying to westernize everything and frankly FF16 just plays like a very mediocre version of DMC that doesn't know what it wants to be. It has a good story with great voice actors but other than that it's just a more action orientated movie game, in my opinion. 15 I haven't really given much time, I like the aesthetic but I've not played it.

It might be nostalgia but after going back to 13 I really don't hate it as much as I used too, the same goes for 12. It's flawed, they have problems and things I don't like about them but at least they still feel somewhat like old Square rather than the modern take they have.

Aside from FF2 I've loved just about every classic FF and while the ones after 6 varied in quality, I liked more of them than I disliked.
That said, I feel like the series has been in an identity crisis for quite some time now. After 12 and 13 failed to resonate with people it seems like the series has just been flailing around all over.

Mind you, I kinda loved what XV (the game, not the multi-media project) tried and failed to be and XVI, while not really an RPG anymore, was actually kind of great - especially its story - but the Remake trilogy for example just does absolutely nothing for me and even kind of annoys me.
(Never played the MMOs - WoW burned me so hard way back in the day that I'm never touching that genre ever again)
I'm not sure what they're going for tonally and style-wise anymore.

So I'm wondering - for people that are more invested into the series than me: What makes a modern Final Fantasy game good in your mind? What qualities does it need to have to resonate with you?

(Oh and FFT is one of the greatest games ever made of course)
