Im a man who believes in equal rights equal fights ::eggmanlaugh

Most of my casters are girls save for the geomancer idk if its intentional or not but girls cost 1400 for hire while boys 1500 I don't see much difference so hiring a girl army can be less costly
i noticed that too. i haven't seen any real difference between the two. in disgaea, the male and female differences were usually applied to a couple of stat differences and unique abilities between the classes. skulls do extra damage with spells and specials, but they cost 50% more sp to use, while their counterpart, mages, have a permanent 50% discount on spells and specials. fire, ice and wind use 4 points of sp for any class or character to use. skulls have to use 6 points, but they get the damage increase. mages only spend 2 points.
there is a small difference in stats as well, males tend to be slightly faster, but females are more accurate. guys tend to wield swords and axes; females get lances and bows/guns.

also, what do the crystals do in ff tactics? i just saw one pop up in my current battle.

I still have to figure the difference between guys and girls in tactics gameplay wise , I think just a theory guys get higher stats otherwise no point in having them cost 100 extra Gil.

Crystals if blue restore health/mana and if yellow do the same but also offer you a new ability to learn if one dead enemy is nearing turning into something you might save with emulator until you get a crystal if needed taking into account that you can reach it before the enemy.

Disgae or whatever its called looks like worth a try but ey don't dive much into game mechanics cuz honestly I won't understand anything.

i'll check into the differences and see what's up later.
i was seeing blue crystals and it showed me a menu with learn abilities or restore hp/mp. i did a rest because one of my characters died. i keep hoping for this one goblin formation to show back up. it was just three of them. it would be the perfect group to train my lovely warrior ladies and bring them up a level or 2.
the gender differences don't mean much when you get to the post game, where the ability for each class is what matters most. a character being slightly bad with magic means nothing with a fully powered up staff and a full set of ultra rare handmade armor.

Huh weird usually blue crystals never showed me ability option , ehh I honestly don't think its that important im a man of a practicality whatever works works.

could be part of the mod. it is supposed to tweak a few things like making abilities more reasonable to purchase. there was a move that cost like 4,000 jp to get. i think it was jump.
i found this on reddit: a short discussion about the gender differences in tactics:
basically, guys have slightly more hp growth and a 25% better strength while females get more mp and their magic mirrors the strength stat for males.

As I suspected.

Play with mod first try? What mod?

So I am very passionate about playing Japanese games with translations that are as accurate to the original as they can be (if they exist). Does anyone know of any retranslation mods/hacks for Final Fantasy 8 or Tactics? I know these both have massive translation issues, and I've never been able to find any retranslations mods/hacks. For Tactics, I'd prefer one that isn't a WOTL translation. I want something that's accurate to the original Japanese, and doesn't have the flowery, nonsense dialogue and style of WOTL. I actually prefer the original PS1 translation to WOTL.

For all the other games I have:
FF1- Chaos Rush Edition
FF2 - Chaos Rush Edition
FF3 - Chaos Rush Edition
FF4 – Namingway Edition
FF5 - RPGe
FF6 - Revised Old Style Edition
FF7 - Beacause Edition

And for FF8 I know of Enable MiniMoog, which removes the censorship, but I don't know of any retranslations.

To my understanding FF9, 10, 10-2, 12, Crisis Core, Dirge Of Cerberus, and Type-0 have fine translations, but if anyone knows contrary, please let me know. Thanks!

I see well I would still prefer an original version experience prior to getting any mods.
i think i have an original version in my game collection, i'll take a look and see.

i looked in the repo, there's nothing like that in there. there are some European versions which might be a little bit close to what you're looking for. you might try checking out the internet archive. they have some game collections over there.

Hey everyone, I got a question, what is the absolute best way to play the original ff tactics, is it war of the lions tweak, ff tactics prime, something else. what do they change from the base games?

I understand the sentiment, but I want to cut out mindless grinding

There isnt much grinding tbh you can look up there find my secret of infinite XP , however you better emulate this thing without emulator save its less fun cuz u can't run from battles.

(And other things)

Not that there aren’t genuine translation issues with games especially back in the 90s, but as someone who speaks Japanese the "flowery" poetic translations usually get the point and nuance of the original across much better than an "accurate" translation would. No translation will ever be fully accurate, especially with languages as dissimilar from each other as English and Japanese. A more free conversion can add in the missing information, context clues, references or just linguistic flavors of certain characters that underline their traits. It’s a creative process, not a mechanical one.

I understand translation is a complicated thing. But I prefer accuracy over creative additions. I'd rather have a dry, straightforward translation over flowery, over indulgent, or inaccurate translation. I'm not really a fan of the idea of "localization".

It's the #1 reason why I'm trying to learn Japanese. So I can start consuming Japanese media from the source instead of worrying about inaccurate localizations for every game/anime released here.

You‘re really not getting my point, are you? If the source material is prose (and let’s call video game text that), a dry and straightforward translation isn’t going to be accurate at all. You lose all the nuance, innuendo and poetry of the original. That goes for every language, doubly so for a language as complex, poetic and vivid as Japanese. Even the most basic grammar a character uses conveys meaning, eg when a woman or girl uses traditionally male or boyish first person pronouns to show that they are tomboyish. Classic manga trope too. If you translate it literally she just says "I" and you’re none the wiser as a gamer.
And we’re not even getting into expressions or concepts that are untranslatable. You can solve that conundrum by putting big footnotes in your game or by localizing the text.

I get your point, I'm saying I don't prefer those kinds of translations. I'm less interested in "portraying a tone" than I am in the more literal text, and that is why I tend to prefer most fan translations to official translations. I don't want to start an argument, because this topic typically devolves into that, but I am very much anti-localization. I view localization as a form of censorship in most cases. Especially since when trying to "convey the nuance/tone/feel", it usually results in drastic departures from the original script, even resulting in mischaracterizations. I don't prefer that.

I play Japanese games to experience Japanese games, not games localized through a Western lens. And I know 1:1 translation is nearly impossible, but that's why I prefer more dry, literal translations, with annotations or notes explaining cultural concepts or terms that don't translate well. Some might be lost in translation, but at least it isn't changed or Westernized.

I haven't loaded them myself to check but it only looks that Prime lifts the script from War of Lions and nothing else, not bonus jobs, no War of Lions bonus/secret characters, and no extra scene for Agrias and this listed in the Tweak's page:
  • Smart Encounters: Only fight random encounters when you want to.
Walking past green dots on the map will never trigger a random battle, but stopping ON a green dot always will. So if you want to fight a battle, click ON the green dot; if you don't want to fight a battle, then click on a dot BEYOND the green dot to pass through it safely.
  • Encounter Unscaling: Enemies no longer scale to your level.
Instead, they will have preauthored levels based on their monster type and the location of the battle. For example, Chocobos in Mandalia Plains random battles will always be level 3.
Which I don't believe Prime has, only quality of life fixes, script lift, and bug fixes so no EXP/Job point tricks allowed.

I would say Prime/Convivence is the way to go if you want to avoid the grind while keeping it as authentic as you can but I just say play the original and learn how to cheese it. It might be a grind but most of the grind is you learning how each job works and experimenting with what you like.

FFT: Prime
  • Built upon FFT: Complete v.50, which fixes a few bugs and includes 99% of the script and text from the PSP port, The War of the Lions.
  • Abilities, Character Statistics, Job Levels, and Job Requirements are all identical to the original Japanese release of the game.
  • Newly retranslated Spell Quotes in the WOTL style replace the old quotes
  • Includes ASM hacks made by the Final Fantasy Hacktics community that fix some longstanding bugs and provide quality of life improvements

I heard tweak also makes it so some missable items are no longer missable and improves the find rate of rare items. Is that true

Hmm maybe I'm misremembering DoS, but FF1 is still a game with blank-slate party characters and a somewhat open progression which the series would be quick to abandon
Yeah all versions of FF1 have a blank party you make yourself. The original version of FF3 has the same thing but the 3d remake changed them into named characters with unique appearances.

To op. Maybe you'd like Dragon Quest better? I've found as I get older I prefer them to the Final Fantasy games even though I was never a big fan of Dragon Quest when I was young and actively disliked the original Dragon Warrior on the nes. The only Final Fantasy games I really enjoy playing today are FF1 and FF5 because FF1 is quick and fun to playthrough and FF5 is one of my favourite games of all time and the job system never gets old and I don't care what anyone says I enjoy the story and characters way more than the overrated video game opera and the edgy try hard anime sci fi games that came after.

I've tried getting into the originals, I know there's fun to be had there but I may just be too spoiled to my action-adventure games. The VII remake is fun and XV is my favorite of the series, but man I just can't force my way through the originals either. I'm glad other people enjoy them, but they just aren't for me.

I haven't tried any of the newer Final Fantasies after XII. I played a bit of the demo of FF7 remake but at the time I was playing Dark Souls and the combat felt like a watered down version of that and I just couldn't get into it.
