It’s perfectly ok to not be into final fantasy. I’ve never grown up with the rpg genre due to language barrier. I only had a faint knowledge of how they work due to playing a pirated rom of breath of fire 3 on my psp back in 2009. Once I turned 12, I became good in English and started expanding my horizons. My first beaten rpg was Dragon Quest 1 back when I was 14 or 15 and it opened a whole new world to me. Due to lack of time however, it became really hard for me to ketchup with the genre and since I sorta still see myself as a latecomer and someone with no prior attachment, a part of me still sees the genre as tertiary, even if I love it to death.

My tastes have changed but Dragon Quest remains number 1 with no other series being able to replicate its charm for me. I’ve expanded beyond it of course, but only via SMT/Persona and revisiting Breath of Fire III (which became my favorite PSX game of all time!).

I'm lucky. I've seen almost all consoles since NES. You can't enjoy old games most likely because the quality bar is completely different now. In the 90s, almost all pixel RPGs implied that the player used his imagination. Now everyone is pushing for realistic graphics. Plus, the plot is presented in a completely different way. In the 90s, we had a plot like "You are the chosen one. Go and defeat X." And it was enough. Now, for example, Final Fantasy 16 is called "Anime Game of Thrones".
And yes someone mentioned language barrier. Thats also a thing. I spend time learning english and don't reget it. Got access to huge libary of RPGs and JRPGs. But thats not for all and its completely normal to want game in your native language.

Damn I wonder who that someone was

Anyone tried final fantasy 14? YouTube found out im into final fantasy and been recommending me FF14 ads since......being blown away and impressed so far I expect good stuff but I remember hearing that FF14 had cutscenes that amount to 100 hours worth and I remember a video watching WOW vs FF14 where in FF14 the characters would speak for so long it becomes absurd....as you probably know few years ago final fantasy 14 blew up in popularity and started competing against world of WarCraft.

I swore off MMOs after wasting so much time on World of Warcraft, but I hear FFXIV is good. The base game is ok, but the expansions have really good stories, apparently. Shadowbringers and Endwalker get talked up a lot.

FFXIV's earlier expansions were good for their time, I like them but a lot of people will just stay that they hate anything that isn't Shadowbringers and Endwalker. I think it's worth experiencing up until about Dawntrail then you might want to take a break because the main story questline for that expansion is nigh universally loathed for being so poorly written, poorly localized when it comes to English and generally it's not very good. The tl;dr is that you want to avoid Dawntrail for it's story but might enjoy it's content.

You should try XIV if you're interested, it's pretty okay. The community has been a mess since Stormblood but the content isn't so bad.

Sounds promising but i think if its so big and long then I better save it for last as I have to play every FF title yet ::agree

15 is my favorite final fantasy out of the ones I've played so far. The main characters honestly felt like real people in the real world. I was there along for their struggles thru the good times, the rough times, and right up until the bitter end. That game and it's story are not one I will forget for a long time.

Also glad to see I wasnt the only one who felt the postgame was hollow but not because of the quality of the gameplay. You really put it into words for me. Thank You.

You‘d have to rebuild the entire game from scratch, basically, including the entire 3D geometry, figure out how all the elaborate effects work on completely different hardware then rebuild all the game logic, etc. the list is endless.
While the Dreamcast had a slight if limited edge with texture quality and anti-aliasing the ps2 was much more capable at rendering polygons. I remember an interview with the guys at naughtydog from 2000/2001 where they talked about that in detail. FFX was built from the ground up for the console, making extensive use of the quirks and strengths of the emotion engine. It may not look that impressive anymore but it was fairly high-polygonal stuff for the time and I don’t see the Dreamcast remotely capable of handling the geometry let alone the storage space necessary for such a sizeable game.

Gta3 is much simpler by comparison and I assume it helped a little that the Dreamcast uses windows ce as an OS and still it took countless years.

Reject Final Fantasy, Embrace Dragon Quest

Nah for real though, I also struggle to get into classic Final Fantasy. I’ve only played a couple hours of ff4, ff6, ff7 and ff10 but they’ve never stuck and I’ve always moved on to something else.

The Dragon Quest games all have a very consistent visual style and a wholesome feeling of adventure. I find that the Final Fantasy games have a very inconsistent visual style, with creatures that look like they don’t belong together. The differing size of the sprites in snes FF also throws me off. I also can’t pinpoint a vibe that I can really gel with and become immersed in. It’s not that I need games to be wholesome, my favorite media is usually relentlessly bleak, it’s just that I’m not sure what vibe the FF games are going for at all. Final Fantasy as a series just doesn’t feel like it has a consistent vision.

I’ll probably give the games a try again soon but I’m not sure it will ever be a series that’s for me and that’s okay. I think it’s wonderful that there’s so many different games to choose from and we can all find games that speak to us.

final fantasy started off as a copy, more or less, of dungeons and dragons. you could interpret the various differences between each game as a new dungeon master and their friends starting a new campaign; hence the differences in art and sprites, tone and setting.
that's probably the best way to put it.

If you dont like it, you dont like it, not every game is for everyone . dont beat yourself up over it

I mean, look at Galuf? In his portrait, he doesn't have a beard at all! ?
He looks like the lorax doing the 1000 yard stare

On a more serious note, focusing on the theme of the thread:

As many others have already stated, don't beat yourself up over this. If it ain't right, it ain't right. Period.

That said, you could try focusing on something completely unrelated, and who knows? Boom—you might find yourself hooked on one of the games. Maybe all your brain needed was some time to focus on other activities, reflect on something that was holding you back, and, in this case, allow you to dive deeper.

Who knows? Maybe give it a shot.

to piggyback off what PaleFolkLore said above me as well. try out other kinds of rpgs, Like the Mario & Luigi games or an SRPG like Fire Emblem or XCOM

solid advice all around here. kudos/properz spreadshot to RGT users in this thread in general. contrived, 'obligatory' gaming is a tough trap to get out of that I STILL fall into like those unsightly pits like the ones from Atari2600 E.T. xD my autistic need for certain orders n unnecessarily convoluted processes feel like a forced logic-disconnect from any solid wisdom n awareness I actually possess. a masochistic need for an illusory perfection. striving for imaginary notions of 'objectivity' - too obsessively perfunctory to easily bypass with even strong logical reminders I know to be true n flush-consistent with any given thing's relation to all the other turning gears n moving parts that empirically exist. or are assumed to outside of metaphysical negation possibility.

all these tendencies n mental trappings are just erroneous brain dysfunction. nonetheless, even if conquered they are always a potential or subtle obstacle; always a relevant, perpetual factor, sadly. but life is supposed to be a challenge as much of an entertaining experience, more or less. entropy is just draggin your feet n stagnating/poisoning the satisfying or at least profound journey your life is supposed to be (unless there is a static truth outside of individual perception n interpretive perspective n driven ambitions. doubtful IMO but could be wrong).

this thread hits home but not really on the basis of graphical aesthetic factors. but there are workarounds to these things if you're diligent when you feel you can comfortably handle it - when it's not a total frustrating 'buzzkiLL' or vibekiLL - but, as astutely mentioned by at least 2 posters on this thread - it's good to sense when to give yourself a break n return after your mental 'cache' is cleared of the anti-motivational clutter or any other extraneous baggage-web-weaving (for lack of less ramshackle phrases to relegate it to xD )

if all this is too dense/heady and/or flowery-laden of a musing roundabout solution - then I'll try to sum it up - not sure I ever took much to the cliched, once-trendy phrase/adage "life is what's happening while you're making other plans." - you don't have to multi-task like I'd be cursed to be doing to a non-committal , flighty, mixed-up detriment without my adderaLL. but a plan B, C n so on might be good to help lift the burden off your JRPGing self-expectation. options are good unless you get stuck in the horrifying mire of paralyzing prolonged indecision (I suffer that - not sayin you do). it's good to stay movin, stay busy. idle hands are Garland's tooLs xD sorry, hope my multi-directional yammering helps even in some small way \m/

I found not expecting much from old video games works just fine.

Don't expect smooth gameplay its going to be clunky , don't expect well thought out design people were experimenting with all sorts of stuff back then even spells that damage the caster (im looking at you dark) and its ok in the end somethings aren't meant for you.

Gaming is first and foremost about fun if no fun to be had then don't continue.

The amount of RNG that can happen in this game is insane missing one spell or meeting a certain monster (molbro) or (tonyberry) can spill certain death like the game goes from chill fantasy to your final fantasy pretty quick wonder if each monster has certain encounter percentages.

they usually do, and it can vary from game to game. ff 10 and 12 use a randomly generated number that the ps2 loads up upon booting and that is used to determine things like which enemy parties that you will encounter in 10 and what kind of loot that you are likely to get in 12.

you were talking about the rng stuff in final fantasy. the last bit was about enemy encounters. every game does something a little different.
i'm not sure why, but when i was reading up on how to get a monster in 10, i learned that the ps2 comes up with a random string of numbers whenever you turn it on, and some games use this for certain things. that's why it can seem near impossible to find that stupid little bird enemy near mushroom road. it only spawns on three brightly lit areas of about ten pixels, and if you have bad luck, you can spend hours running around without ever finding it.
hopefully 14 does a better job with rng.

Just Beat Enuo sorry I wasn't quick enough this time to get a screen shot of him being defeated, so here is what happens immediately afterwards, all that's left is to get all the dark arts spells and master necromancer and then do the boss rush in cloister of the dead, then final fantasy 5 advance will be completed. I think the next Final Fantasy I'll play will be Type Zero

Been more than a week since I started Final Fantasy tactics and let me tell you....the game sucks just like any Final Fantasy game its so bad like how can they keep making these bad games like square shouldn't have been named square it should be called sqaurehead because they make games for people with square shaped heads....its SUCKS.

Alright now the game is so bad that I been playing it forwas past 9 days and sank 20 hours in it how can this game be this is unfathomable to me.

So the game so far is pretty good its basically the battle system we know and love but this time you can run around in it and do a hell lot of cool stuff like flanking enemies and such.

The game even has job system pretty cool right? Here are my thoughts on some jobs:

Squire: light/basic infantry they can do a little of everything from attacking enemy up close with swords or even axes to harassment from afar by throwing stones they can heal and are quite maneuverable by having +1 move as an ability , they also have another important ability "gain JP up".

Knight: the knights are expansive and hard to maintain , they are your only warriors who can use heavy armor and shields until lancers get introduced with high durability and evasion they are the tanks of the team , they also can debuff the enemy in multiple ways from breaking their armor to most importantly their weapon , breaking enemy weapons like archers removes them from the battle its that good.

Chemist: battle medics but guy chemists look like shady dudes who would give you substances that make you dizzy , girl chemists are wearing maid clothes repurposed for fighting , they can throw all sorts of potions and can equip guns later on , their weakness is unlike magic the potions can be blocked by trees or walls....since they can equip guns im thinking of making a rifle squad using chemists only.

Archers: with good reach these guys are excellent for harassment or sniping enemy back lines from killing summoners and mages the archer can get to the high ground and kill everyone from there especially with charge.

Chocobo: while not a class or job of itself chocbos have move value of 6 enabling them to maneuver and move great distances they can reach enemy rear pretty easily and work on harassing the enemy from there they can also work as support with their cure , they however can't equip stuff making them less durable.

Since this game allows you to hire soldiers and name them here are the MVPs of the team 2 of them I started the game with as chemists

Screenshot_2025-02-15-23-03-31.png

This guy is carrying the team the whole time , starting as a chemist in mission 1 he quickly developed into a black mage (game calls them wizard) and start burning people left and right he helped in the early battles greatly his most important battles were:

1-battle vs algus
2-battle of lionel castle helping defeat Dracula by casting flare amounting to 202 damage
3-various skirmishes against wild beasts , the death corps and more.

Screenshot_2025-02-15-23-03-54.png

My dear Chamberlain became the archer of the team his help in defeating algus is unforgettable, helping defeat various summoners and mages without Chamberlain I wouldn't have progressed this far into the story.

His most important battles are:
1-defeating algus by taking out the lone knight that faces squad 2 he climbed up to the stairs and rained down charged arrows on algus and his lackeys.
2-rescuing mustadio and his father by constantly keeping enemy archers at bay.
3-battle of lionel castle by neutralizing the summoner and the archers.

Screenshot_2025-02-15-23-03-45.png

And finally Shelia , without her none of the impressive feats Chamberlain or sorvez would have been possible , the healer of the team and later on with a gun in her hands became a damage dealer from afar whenever she could shoot that is , while her stats aren't as impressive when it comes to faith she is a terrible spellcaster , her efforts however in keeping the team are legendary everybody stand up for Shelia as a sign of respect ::bigboss

The game can be pretty difficult and its quite unforgiving in that if the soldier dies you have only 3 turns to get him back up otherwise he will die permanently , this makes investing into soldiers a bit of a risk since they might die next battle , and this is even worse considering highly experienced troops.

This game is the result of someone at square looking at the battle System and saying "I can make a tactics game out of this" and here is the result.

Looking forward for the sequel Final Fantasy strategy where you command vast armies of troops and can mount knights on chocobos.

Like really? Knights can't ride chocobos in this game they fight on foot instead what a shame....

I've actually really been wanting to get to the rest of the series, at least the main games to a certain point. I've completed FF4, FF7, FF9, and FFX. I've played a good amount of FF6, FF8, and FFX-2.

I'm just worried certain ones will be a bit too dated for me to get into, but it would bother me to have any gaps.

half of this read like you were reviewing a disgaea game "my healer heal my knight's severed foot and eye while capping 3 thugs with her .45 magnum" :)
i think i tried twice at some point to play this, going by the screenshots. i think i borrowed the game for 10 minutes from a friend, and i have a psp game called "final fantasy tactics: war of the lions".
i booted it up, watched an alright anime opening, got 2 rounds into the first battle and stopped.
kind of weird for knights not being able to ride chocobos. the anime opening showed what looked like the main characters each riding one.

Final Fantasy X is one of the best games ever made imo. It's the first game I ever played that made me start to appreciate the beauty of the maths behind video games.
Also has some of the best post-game content and characters. My ranking so far is:
X > IV > VII > VI > XIII-2 > Type-0 > XIII > XV

Looking forward to playing more from the series
