yeah, the loading times are a bit weird. i know it's a laser reading the data off of a cd, but considering ff 1-6 are 16 bit games for all intents and purposes, they shouldn't take that long to read and go through all of that data, since it would be about 3 mb at most. the 3d games and tactics make sense, since they were built from the ground up to run on a ps1, so they take advantage of the tech. but 2 games upgraded from nes to snes and 4 snes games taking that long to load. they could have spent a few days working on efficiency.
FF1/2/4/5 loaded fast either it be transitioning to battle or going into the menu it's only FF6 that suffered delay begs the question why FF6 got that when FF5 loaded pretty smoothly

for the pikmin 1² randomizer, probably. i'm doing it deathless, so a lot of rng has to be in my favor. i'm going to have to accpet some losses if i want to finish the game. so, yeah, you'll be a middle age man by the time i finish playing through this seed for the game.
i'll probably boot tactics up later and try to play something more, relaxing than a hard ass difficulty mod.
if you want any info on the pikmin games, feel free to ask. i know quite a bit of stuff about the games, especially 1 and 2. i even have a thread here on the site all about pikmin.
I never attempted a deathless run in any RTS it's quite time consuming process especially when most RTS have fast kill times and with a randomizer that feels like RNG taken to 11 i mean can you look at age of mythology a game with some insta kill abilities and go "yup looks good for deathless"

HAH i never ask for info , info asks for me ::smug here is what's going to happen if i try pikmin

-play it on hardest difficulty (if that exists)
-end up losing on mission 1
-gets stuck on mission 3 or 4 or whatever advanced level
-takes 16 hours to finally understand every mechanic
-brute force/save scum my way through the rest of the game
-WIN

End up missing some overpowered thing somewhere that could make the game 10 times easier

>good game

the battle times were fast, but saving and loading took a while in 4. i'll have to check the others at some point. i played ff4 the most out of the psx instalments.

it's mostly what people do when they can either do the 14 day challenge run or speed run the game. the game caps out at about 7 and 1/2 hours if every day is used to its fullest extent. i can get to the end of the game in just under 14 in game days; and i can still improve on that.

difficulty settings exist only for 3 and 4, and even then, those are the easiest instalments in the series. so, the difficulty comes mainly from forming strategies on collecting everything in the most efficient order.
i learned an interesting fun fact that i will post over on the pikmin thread later, when i can relocate the video where i found out about a weird bit of gameplay info. you have to try to lose on day one, and that's only possible in the second game.
it is possible to get stuck, but that's more related to collecting everything, and that mainly in the second game with the bullshit treasure piece to collect. you will need to farm a bit to get it.
that is about how long it takes to beat the second game, so i would recommend that one to start, but it is the hardest instalment in the series; barring mods.
it's very good that you are familiar with this technique, you will be using it very frequently.
"win" is a subjective word.
there are power ups in the second game. and they do make things a bit easier. if you miss the one power up in the first game, you will lose. no exceptions.

Man, FFIV holds up really well. I've been playing the Pixel Remaster version on Switch, the changes they've made feel pretty minor, mostly graphical stuff. Although the generic menu/font/sound effects/etc. being the same for FF1-6 does take away a lot of the charm of each game. It feels like the game is a little harder than what we got on SNES as FFII, maybe this version has the harder "normal" difficulty that the Japanese version did? It feels pretty imbalanced in that a lot of enemies and even some bosses are pretty worthless, and then occasionally you just get whaled on by an enemy that hits like a truck and can drop someone in three hits. Maybe it was always like that. Anyway, even though it's kind of basic, I'm having fun, same with FF1. I've only beaten the far easier port on GBA, and dabbled on NES and PS1, so I'm hoping to beat the game proper this time.

Shame the sounds are the same i really loved the FF5 spell sounds

I've just started playing through the original FFVII on my PSV for the first time after tossing up between it or Rebirth and honestly feel I made the right call. Having a great time with it, and having learned about these characters through pop culture, memes and references can honestly say they've still surprised me, being a lot more complex than I would have guessed.

The original PSX translation is . . . about what I'd heard but it's tolerable. "This guy are sick" definitely had me thinking about which translated version I should play. Still, explorations great, narrative is really engaging and you just can't beat those og pre-rendered backgrounds, just gorgeous.

Fully intend on playing at least 6, 9, 10, and 12 after this one and likely to go back and play Tactics and Crisis Core again afterwards.

Its one of those where all the stars aligned type situations same with 6 albeit combat in pre FF7 FF was less "cinematic" and more "static" just don't get kidnapped by the turks :loldog

I recommend the GBA version of FF5. Mostly because nostalgia. It was my first Final Fantasy. Self centered reasons aside, the English translation is a treat if you like goofy stuff. Also has extra content not found in the Super Famicom or PS1 versions.

They are good version, the only flaw I think is the sound (specially for VI), the GBA sound chip doesn't do justice to Uematsu's work.
sleepy lucky star GIF

I've been playing through FF1 from the Dawn of Souls collection on my DS Lite.
Maybe it just nostalgia but this is how I first played Final Fantasy 1 and besides possibly the PS1 Orgins version, this is the way I prefer to play this game.

From what I understand, the best Final Fantasy to play at GBA is Final Fantasy V. Since everyone keep telling me it is the best port of that game.
In case FF1 and 2, I played the anniversary edition that was on playstore before being replaced by the pixel remasters. I played FF3 twice, first the pixel remaster which had no story since the main characters were just namless onion knights, and then psp 3d remake, which was much better, characters had actual names and design and story arcs.
For FFIV without a doubt, PSP complete edition.
For FFVI, I have heard mixed opinion. Most suggest SNES original, but a problem with that one is the bad english translation. The GBA version has better english translation but bad music. The pixel remaster also seems to be a mixed bag amongst some fans. Probably if I come to playing it, I may go with pixel remaster, but if the SNES version has better translation (perhaps a fan translation available), I will go with that.
So the only mainline FF I am told that is worth playing on GBA is V. I haven't checked if there are any spin offs on the device. Must be I think, so will check them out as well.

I have an itch to play some rpgs on GBA and outside of Final Fantasy 1 and 4 I haven't finished any of the ones on this console.

Are this good enough versions to play for the first time or would it be better just to pick a different game?

Be sure to use a soundfont restoration mod for FFV and then yeah, all of them are great.
I personally love FFII soundfont on GBA, but that's me.
FFVI is a particular case: the brightness of that game makes you wanna play other versions. I would recommend to go into the SNES uncensored one if you don't care for extra content. Because the only other version that got the latter one was that mobile slop one from a decade ago.

I guess?

I never played the original. Back then, I never played RPGs at all. All the reading is what I always turned me off the genre. "If I wanted to read that much, I'd read a fucking book!" I'd tried Lunar on the Sega CD, just couldn't get into it. Then I tried the FFVII demo that came with Tobal 1 when I rented it. Playing through it, again, just couldn't get into it.

Fast forward all these years later, during the covid ebola aids outbreak, back when it started, and everyone saying if your "immune comprised, you're going to die!" FFVII Remake came out, looking at vids of the impeding release, I thought "Well, if I'm gonna drop dead anyways, I'll try this; so I can say I did it." Went to the store even bought the Deluxe Edition, "Might as well go big, if I 'm gonna just suddenly struck down." Then a miracle happened. I liked the remake. Then I went balls deep reading into the lore, buying the novel Tale of two Pasts which I still need to finish. Even saw the Advent Children movie and the anime short, Last Order. (though I know that's the original continuity.)

I didn't look up what as different or cut until I beat the Remake. Then I understood why people were disappointed or upset with the cuts. So now, I get it.

I prefer Aerith over Tifa.

I would have never experienced OG if not for older family members who bought it and i'd just watch them play and really enjoy it for the story. I'm eternally grateful to them...
Remake is fan good fan service, it just isn't the real thing for me.
I love Tifa and Aerith both, but Tifa more because she loves the real Cloud and pulls him out of his delusions.

Yes I bought the game and it was exactly what I wanted ( i also bought rebirth, not sure when I will actually start it )

AFinal Fantasy VII New Threat hack for PS1 would be fantastic.

Screenshot.jpg

just saw the new Shinra Archaeology Cut ps1 hack based on the pc mod.
i thought it would be fantastic if we had a similar ps1 rom hack based on the new threat mod on pc.
i know that we have similar things like survivor or rebrorn hacks.
as good as those hacks are, they are very basic compared to new threat.

even a less ambitious version of it like Shinra Archaeology Cut would be cool.
what do you guys think?

The PSX game is more limited than what can be changed. The Archaeology Cut doesn't really have a PSX port, only its translation does. I don't think the PSX version will be getting these types of mods now that the PC version is so widespread.
Lost Wing is the one I remember modifying most stuff on PSX, but only a demo was ever released ~15 years ago.

Sure would, been dreaming about it for over a decade.

Shoutout to the Final Fantasy games that weren't really Final Fantasy games, with Adventure being a Mana game and Legends being SaGa games.

When I was a kid I played these a lot. Final Fantasy III on SNES (which is actually FF6) helped me learn how to read, and everything else is history.
