Filters and shaders!

You could try with ShaderGlass or Reshade.
Reshade

If you scroll up to my last comment, those Warcraft screenshots were done with Reshade: crt-frutbunn and scanlines-abs combined. You can add Reshade to just about any program. You can also add other filters. Same comment, those Symphony Of The Night screens were with HelelSingh's CRT-Guest which can be added to Reshade to implement on any program
Gonna give Reshade a shot I think, thank y'all
And @Nidstang I didn't even know Warcraft used to look like that, I thought it was always 3d ::lol

Another cool thing with Reshade is that it's official integrated with Duckstation, so you can use filters directly in the emulator too.

@Nidstang
I tried Reshade out but I definitely need to mess with it a bit more. I found the scanlines-abs and crt-frutbunn files you mentioned; scanlines-abs makes a big difference. Not as good as a crt but better than a modern display without effects. I want to find good dithering effects now and see if that improves it further

CRT-Guest-Advanced-NTSC is also a great swiss army knife. On Golden Axe, Super Contra, all those late 80s arcades it's night and day.

I can fix that.
Funnily enough, it does look better LOL

I don't really mess with filters, shaders, or overlays. I just don't like how many of them look. And the few I've seen pictures of that I like, I'm not really willing to put in the effort for.
The effort is clicking on Options > Videos > Shaders/Filters and picking one lol. Past that you can put in as much work as you want to tweak it, but for the most part those click-and-forget options are more than good enough.

Put a CRT shader on a GameBoy Color game and you get a good looking NES game. With color correction to compensate for the oversaturation they put in place for the old LCD screen.

I just run it all on a CRT. On systems from 5th gen and back on a CRT Monitor with a CRT filter cause im not gonna spend money on buying every single console pre-5th gen and hooking them up via S-video on my JVC. I rather use an emulator and pluging them up on the Sony CRT Monitor via VGA. Looks great and plays better *ahem* PSX *ahem*

CRT-Mattias is the best looking shader that I have used, especially for 3d games. However it has almost no options and i wish you could tone down some things. But yeah, seriously the best looking one especially if you care about the emulating the atmosphere of playing on a composite and don't care about PVM level sharpness

CRT-Mattias is gorgious, I usually just reduce curvature a bit. NewpixieCRT got inspired by it and you can tweak a few more parameters but they're both awesome. Love those rolling scanlines.

if i see you using those ScaleFx or xBRZ shaders, we are throwing hands at the nearest parking lot
Fight me. I use ScaleFX on Duckstation to upscale textures all the time. Looks amazing combined with CRT-Lottes.

I've tried using CRT filters and things like that but I don't really like them for the most part because they don't really look the same as an actual CRT. Scanlines on a real CRT didn't look like static, unmoving lines that make things slightly blurry. They flickered and moved. CRT screens felt like they were always moving when you watched them. Looking at a static grid of lines with some distortion effects isn't really the same at all.

oh on ps1 its ok i was mainly talking about people using them on like snes games
XD I did that too. 25 years ago back in the ZSNES era on a SVGA CRT. And I thought it looked better than the real thing.

Leisure Suit Larry 2 - EGA 16 colors - Retroarch DosBox Pure.

CRT-Guest-Advanced-NTSC shader, trying to aim for a composite effect - Looks almost as good as a VGA 256 colors game.

Everything up to PS2 i like it Native.I use some Fancy stuff on Citra and other Handheld emu´s cause on big screen it´s too pixelated sometimes but i try to keep it as accurate as possible.I used PSXfin for 15 years because no shaders,no fancy stuff and such.

I remember trying ray tracing on Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, and it shot my gpu temps. Never again.

i,m from the mastersystem generation and i use filters for games
and upscale for ps1 and 2 games.

I think the xbrz and bilinear ones are the worst ones. And i don't use filters that much in general

I use the dot shader for everything 2D, even console games.

Admittedly, I really enjoy the AdvancedMAME Scale2x filter that comes with VisualBoyAdance (I even got it in mGBA)
Note: DO NOT CONFUSE IT WITH the disgusting "hq2x" & "lq2x", those filters smudge the pixel art so badly it's disgusting and every time I see a YouTubers using them I die! ::hellmo

On 2022, I marathon like 8-10 Pokemon Romhacks (for some reason) and since I play on x4 sized Window, the pixels were looking really ugly magnified!

Romhack: PKMN GS Chronicles
Romhack: Touhoumon Another World: REVISED

I also tried to play Touhoumon recently but got bored, Im so sick of Pokemon's basic RPG mechanics formula dude! ::homerscream

No Shader on PPSSPP which i use a lot to play Yugioh
On PCSX2 I remember using briefly a Shader during a KH2:FM mod testing, that added Scanlines but not in the whole screen but parts of the areas where the colours/shadows were darker and I really liked it

Mostly bc they are too hard on my eyes, and smoothing filters also tend to look very ugly
