Filters and shaders!

list.png

I use one in Retroarch called CRT-Consumer. You can find a version in the Glslp group and in the Slang group.

I find the slang version looks like how I remember my consoles actually looking when I finally upgraded to SCART leads to everything in 1996.

The quality of the shader also depends on the size of your screen and the distance you are playing. I use CRTnewPixie on everything up to 32/64bits and it's absolute perfection to play on the couch in a 42" screen at 2 or 3 meters away, most imperfections disappear at that distance.

I may be weird but I wish I could apply something like this to my whole damn system. At that point I think it's better to just get a crt monitor :loldog

ShaderGlass exists to add shaders to anything on Windows. I've been wanting a Linux version of something similar, but haven't found anything yet

Unfortunately, it seems that windows identifies it as something akin to the sniping tool, so it has those weird yellow outlines around the screen.

This can be disabled in Windows 11, but I am using 10 so sux for me I guess.

i dont even know where to start this is such a fucking rabbit hole
if you haven't found something you like by now DM me and I can hook you up with my retroarch shader profiles

If you do, would you mind sharing what settings you mess around with, and perhaps even share screenshots of what said settings produce? ::biggrin
Here you go

You can configure it to look better than this (or apply even more shaders if you wish), my settings are just too subtle.

I'm gonna update here actually, done 2 so far on Duckstation:

and my fav so far below subtle but nice, with CRT scanlines: (best to enlarge image to see)

Gonna experiment with some more, there's quite a few here to try.

EDIT: Back for one more extra CRT Filter, now this looks nice and old school. Added: 'HYLLIAN' They stack, Cool beans!.

I hope this helps out, even for just one person out there, Cheers!

Considering this is much better than my configuration, I think this is the inspiration I needed. ::thank-you

Glad it was of some help, it's the basics but ultimately its thanks to you, you gave me the motivation to mess around, glad i did. first time getting these to work, easier than I thought. Enjoy.

Get Reshade and apply crt-frutbunn and scanlines-abs together. I think it looks great

The stock NES/SNES Classic mini-console filters are actually surprisingly good too.

And in mgba, if on PC, use TV filter with line brightness set to 0.6. And if on a phone via Retroarch, use the pre-set GritsScanlines that comes with Retroarch. These settings look good.

Add Reshade and use crt-frutbunn and scanlines-abs together. Just disable the scanline setting in crt-frutbunn and use the scanline-abs for the scanlines.

Thankyou so much, your the real one for this. cheers!
Edit: Gonna set this right now.

i remember when i do scanlines, i try 1 below line visibility, since i don't like when lighter lines are between darker lines

Anything PS2 and back I want them, I was a lifelong console gamer and grew up in the eighties with CRT TVs. Old games smoothed out at a higher resolution look unnatural to me. They look even worse stretched to 16:9 with no filters at all! A sin against god, that one! I've always felt like that, as early as Sega Dreamcast when it got a bunch of Capcom PS1 games ported to it, I was appalled by PS1 games smoothed out. Still am, ew.

I did stop using mega Bezel though, it taking 15 seconds to load some games was silly. Shame because they are awesome. I tend to use shaders that mimic NTSC RF with Sega Saturn and anything before it because that's what we used growing up. We lived in a more rural area, still do really, and RF here looks about as good as composite anyway. (I've seen video of SNES via RF in a big city and yeah... OOF!)

We used to have a two consoles RF daisy chained plugged into a VCR plugged into the TV to be as efficient as possible since we tended to have the TVs with few connections. If you have a bunch of actual hardware and a scaler like Retrotink 5x or 4k, not a bad idea to get a VCR. I had that setup with my Retrotink 5x before I was forced to sell the bulk of my physical retro stuff due to long term unemployment. (but never my VHS tapes)

Now with Cemu, RPCS3. Naomi arcade... yeah I just jack up the resolution. I went through a phase where I thought it was funny to use reshade to make modern games look retro, but it was a brief fascination.

Consumer and consumer NTSC are terrific all round for me, along with Guest NTSC. I really like the kind of screen curvature Consumer uses as well, it's much better than what a lot of the other shaders use. You can modify it's parameters pretty darn well to mimic playing a PS2 on a CRT in 2002 all the way to playing a NES/Genesis on a CRT in 1988. the file labeled presets on the main slang shaders page has some good stuff in it as well.

I like CRT shaders.
But those "filters", Like HQ, xBRZ, MMPX etc....

I hate how they always cause weird artifacts, specially as the sprites get really small like on GBA.

But i found a middleground... HQ2x in retroarch, but use the parameters to dial it down so it smooths just the bare minimum: https://slow.pics/c/xMUGS9kb
(You can click on the image to toggle between NoFilter>HQ2xYUV=0>HQ2xYUV=1)

Oh, btw, in the shaders_slang folder there is a folder called presets. I started using the NTSC-sharp shaders for anything N64 and back.I tend to use the ones marked ntsc svideo glow x4, but is really easy to customize. I think these are CRT Geom presets. Can quickly drop the ntsc resolution scaling a touch, it has a quick option to move from svideo to composite or in my case RF, (we used RF only for NES and SNES) turn up the NTSC intensity and brightness, then add one level of film grain. Then activate the retro crisis RF dsp plugin. Perfect for me for NES, SNES, and Genesis.

The audio filter really bring it all together, all I need after that is some big old fashioned dining room table chairs and some blankets to make a blanket fort around the TV and it's a Friday night in 1988, and I can almost hear all the crickets in the backyard (we actually had a creek around the bulk of our property so it was LOUD, best sleep of my life!) and smell the movie night popcorn. Use the same preset for Saturn and PS1 but keep it on the default svideo mode. Give me them nice chunky pixels I love on my 32-bit 3d games! It also finally gives me a look I'm truly happy with on N64.

Give them a look!
